Well, it still has blond tips, so my guess is... shading fail?

As for it becoming pigtails... what are you talking about? You're not talking about the fact that her hair trails behind her head, but then mysteriously plumps up as it reappears from the other side, are you?

Eh, it's Liefeld. At this point, either's a valid interpretation.

(And while I see what you're talking about? I still think pigtails is a more artistically-accurate description, as well as providing a hilarious comparison to Punky Brewster.)
