Ultimate Comics Avengers #3
So, now that the Ultimates as we know them are no longer a team and Millar's decided they weren't Dark and Edgy enough anyway, Fury's gone out to hand-pick himself a new Black Ops team made of people who are even bigger bastards in order to hunt down an AWOL Captain America.

Let's meet some of the new crew, shall we?

First, we open on War Machine rescuing a couple of US soldiers and then wiping out the entire village they were being held in.

Then, we get to meet Gregory Stark, who as Fury so helpfully exposits, is ten times smarter than his brother Tony, and completely amoral. Also a walking sack of ego.

In scan form, we start with meeting the new Wasp, who interrupts some snipers as they're about to kill Secretary of State Clinton. Oh, and all those guesses we'd made about Jan or Jocasta? Apparently out the window.

Meanwhile, Starkbro is explaining about how he's down with this new black ops thing, and is perfectly happy to supply the kinds of weapons his brother is too squeamish to handle.

What kind of weapons?

Why, the new Hulk and Spidey, of course!

And for the final member of the new team, Fury calls in a new Black Widow and they exchange sweet nothings.

They track down Cap, but things don't exactly go as planned, since he already knew they were coming. After evading most of the crew, they decide to pull out the big guns and drop in War Machine.

And thus ends our introduction to the Ultimate Avengers, and the opening for next month's Big Damn Fight Scene. Thoughts?

I'm pretty certain that a) The SSS was not intended to produce enlightenment in any continuity, and b) 616 Steve Rogers was not an exceptional man only because of the Serum. His character, spirit is all his own.

Ult Steve is probably more typical of common attitudes of his time; he's still a pretty liberal guy from his time, and he's updating quite fast.

Right-wing military dislike of French is commonplace NOW, for reasons that have had years to build. If UltSteve had a minor prejudice from the 40's, it'd only be reinforced by the kind of people he would be hanging out with most.
