Ultimate Comics Avengers #3
So, now that the Ultimates as we know them are no longer a team and Millar's decided they weren't Dark and Edgy enough anyway, Fury's gone out to hand-pick himself a new Black Ops team made of people who are even bigger bastards in order to hunt down an AWOL Captain America.

Let's meet some of the new crew, shall we?

First, we open on War Machine rescuing a couple of US soldiers and then wiping out the entire village they were being held in.

Then, we get to meet Gregory Stark, who as Fury so helpfully exposits, is ten times smarter than his brother Tony, and completely amoral. Also a walking sack of ego.

In scan form, we start with meeting the new Wasp, who interrupts some snipers as they're about to kill Secretary of State Clinton. Oh, and all those guesses we'd made about Jan or Jocasta? Apparently out the window.

Meanwhile, Starkbro is explaining about how he's down with this new black ops thing, and is perfectly happy to supply the kinds of weapons his brother is too squeamish to handle.

What kind of weapons?

Why, the new Hulk and Spidey, of course!

And for the final member of the new team, Fury calls in a new Black Widow and they exchange sweet nothings.

They track down Cap, but things don't exactly go as planned, since he already knew they were coming. After evading most of the crew, they decide to pull out the big guns and drop in War Machine.

And thus ends our introduction to the Ultimate Avengers, and the opening for next month's Big Damn Fight Scene. Thoughts?

Hmm... I am so hesitant after Ultimatum to even get near this. Any word on Thor or Valkyrie?

From the looks of it, they're going to be in Loeb's New Ultimates title.

Yeah, I'll take Brubaker's angle on Cap respecting the French Resistance as allies during the war, and not Millar's U.K. Francophobia channeled through a jingoistic, All-American dickweed.

This was more fun when it was Stormwatch/The Authority.

(sorry for the Ultimate!Hate, those who like it.)

You can't compare this tosh to Stormwatch or the Authority, IMO. They did break ground in superhero books, just like the Ultimates did, but with a few exceptions, it was never filled with as much loathing and spite as Millar loads his work with, frankly.

I never saw Ellis spout so much bile for politics and countries he doesn't like through his characters as Millar has. Ellis actually seems to have a point to his stories, most of the time, whereas Millar has entered this period in his career where he's akin to a child throwing his toys around and breaking them for fun.

the funny thing is in one of the stories leading up to the Ultimate Galactus saga, Cap experesses respect for the Soviets in WW2.

Well, after the 'stands for France' thing Fury was 'what the Hell was that' and Steve was 'I dunno, I wasn't really thinking'. And it's Fury who says it here.

I can buy Steve having general xenophobia of the 'all the food's foreign muck and you can't get a decent cup of tea anywhere' kind. It's not uncommon in people born at his time.

1) Please don't tell me that Miller's 'darker and edgier' Spider-man is going to replace Ult!Spidey.

2) I still don't see why most fanboys seems to think that this is the greatest thing since flavored ice-cream, so far the stories are pretty bland and it feels like a cheap summer blockbuster movie that tries to be intelligent or smart(and fails). It might be because it's not up to my tastes.

3) I have my own ideas about an Ultiverse, only with DC characters but I can't find a place to post it where anyone can read it (well, mostly people from here), since I'm doing 2-3 series at once and the story is actually very big, fanfiction.net is out of the question.

It's cool so far, the art is way pretty. The scenes of Combat Cap are lovely.

I don't know about the new characters, but I'm willing to wait a few issues and see what they're like.

Also, Steve is always super cute in hoodies, and I'm not sure why.

not likin this much
that scan with the hulk is absolutely horrible

the only thing that interests me here is fake spidey's identity, and it's more of a passing interest than anything else

and by the way, what happened to Tony? i know that he didn't die in Ultimatum, but did they explain why he's not with the Ultimates/Avengers anymore?

I bet if the secret Fury wants to hide is that whole Red Skull as Cap's son thing is bullshit.

And while I know this is all gov't controlled(like Fury'd really get another position of power) but I bet Cap gets the other members of the original team's help.

So, Spider-man is probably Eddie Brock. At least, that's the option that makes most sense.

Venom being dressed up in a Spider-man costume and put on the Avengers for an unsuspecting public to embrace. Haven't seen that in a good long while.

Oh look, again with Millar's "person kills giant(s) by flying through them at high speed" fetish.
(Well, in this case they're only giants from her perspective.)
