DiDio's latest move: Wednesday Comics, a.k.a. the next weekly series
DC made the announcement on its next weekly series earlier this week. It's going to be called Wednesday Comics.

According to Newsarama: "The concept is that we are trying to recapture the spirit, format, and sense of enjoyment that people had form reading the Sunday comics that arrive in newspapers every week," DC Sr VP and Executive Editor Dan DiDio explained to Newsarama. "So, for this 12 week period, we’re creating 16 weekly strips that will be presented in newspaper format, which will feature some of our primary characters, as well as some of the premiere creators in the business."

Edited to add: Found a bit more information, have added it in.

Here's the teaser image they released:

We don't know all the creators or characters yet, but we do know some.

Sean Galloway, the lead character designer for the current Spider-Man cartoon, is drawing a Teen Titans feature, and he's put up some teaser art on his blog:

Kyle Baker's handling both writing and art chores for a Hawkman feature, and some preview pages were posted on The Pulse:

On his blog some months ago, he described it thusly: "By the way, just for the fans, I'm making this story the bloodiest and most depressing story ever! Full of realism! HAWKMAN'S WORLD WILL BE CHANGED FOREVER! I've revealed too much. I can say no more."

Joe Quinones, who's drawing a Green Lantern feature, also put up some stuff on his blog:

On a message board, Kurt Busiek had this to say about it: "Keep in mind that it's more like two pages [as opposed to one] -- those are big pages. And mine, at least, is written as a series of old-style full-page Sunday strips, so it's designed to be read one instalment at a time, one week apart."

Lastly, Ben Caldwell, who's writing and drawing a Wonder Woman feature, put some stuff up on his blog, as well. He did the illustrations for the children's novel Wonder Woman: The Journey Begins.

He's been talking about it too, on his message board: "my original story was going to concentrate on the origins of WW and the amazons, working in a lot of mythic material that i think was been overlooked in the comics. as usual, TONS of research that is for nothing... DC gently steered me in a different direction. the new story will still focus on WW's early days, but less of the amazon mythology. can't say much more without giving away the story, but it will feature lots of classic WW villains like dr poison and cheetah, and also a lot of myths and history from around the world."

So far, we also know that Allred and Gaiman are on a Metamorpho feature, Azzarello and Risso are on Batman, Adam Kubert (writing) and Joe Kubert (art) are on Sgt. Rock, and Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner are working on a Supergirl feature.

So the Wednesday Comics Robin's mask is actually two pieces, one for each eye. Huh.

Is that Sgt. Rock I see in that splash page?

The Teen Titans stuff looks out of a saturday morning cartoon, which... I don't like a lot. The proportions look weird. Not bad, just not my kinda stuff.

Kyle Baker's Hawkman stuff looks... um. Hideous. I've seen him do all sorts of art, but that one just... looks awful. I love his cartoony art, and I've seen his semi-realistic stuff. This one looks like a drug trip.

Green Lantern? Very 70's spy-like. I love it.

Wonder Woman? Too soon to tell. The sketches look nice, but I'll wait until they're inked so I can actually tell what's going on. :p

I think the GL skews more to the 50s than the 70s. Check out the old television with the fiddly knobs, the dresses on the women, and the Googie-inspired GL logo. At first I was a little leery as to another story setting GL in this era as The New Frontier did it so well, but this looks pretty fun.

I actually love the Hawkman pages. Very Kubert-dynamic. To each his own and all that.

I wouldn't feel so bad about 'em if only they didn't remind me of 90's anatomy. :p

I like the cartoony Titans look. Miss Martian is adorable! Not sold on Wonder Girl's new costume; skirt over half a pair of pants is just weird. It looks like they're trying for a "street" look but had no idea how to do it.

Gaiman + Allred = HOLY CRAP AWESOME. A major step up for Metamorpho, after that lackluster Jurgens mini.

Kubert = Sgt. Rock. Perfect.

Uhh...Hawkman, ripping off an airplane's door in mid-flight is probably not a good idea, unless you're looking to kill everyone on board. Art looks kind of muddy, and the layouts are a bit too busy. Also, that kid's cartoony head is really out of place.

Hard to tell about the Wonder Woman stuff. The sketches are hard to follow, but they are just sketches, and the designs look nice.

Kyle Baker, I love you, but I have no idea what's going on in your pages. What a mess.

Overall, this sounds awesome. Newspaper format is a great way to get the characters out there - people may or may not buy comic books, but EVERYONE reads the Sunday Funnies. If nothing else, it'll be great to see more action stuff in there - these days, Prince Valiant is about all we get.
As for the individual strips - I like the look of the Teen Titans, although I'm not sure why everyone seems to look like a ninja/samurai/mecha type of thing. I don't have any problem with the Hawkman artwork, but the layout is a bit confusing - here's hoping that a few captions and word balloons will help straighten things out. Green Lantern looks cool. Neil Gaiman is writing a comic strip?! HOLY CRAP! Oh, this has potential.

Oh, yeah, I liked this idea when it was Action Comics Weekly.

In practice, though, it means tying together what could be several different series with different readerships. It will hobble sales on all of them as each reader finds that he dislike a majority of features.

Also like ACW, there's a Green Lantern strip. Because DC still doesn't get that Green Lantern is too ridiculous to even include in an anthology book. It'll only depress sales, because it's a stupidly over-powered magic-hat character. Also, it's Hal, so I want nothing to do with it.

Also, what is up with Cassie's pants!

I wish this would work. I wish it could work. But balancing an anthology so that everything in it works together is hard. And DC already has a line that lets readers pick & choose. I predict underwhelming numbers.

Unless they use this as a way to have a series that busts out of comic shops into mass market. That would actually make sense (& is in fact a business model I advocate).
