Djurdjevic Draws Everyone (Round VII)

The cover to Daredevil #500, by Marko Djurdjevic and news about the creative team.

 The cover:

Okay, let's see: Typhoid Mary, Echo, Milla Donovan, Black Widow, Karen Page, Bullseye & Elektra, Mister Fear, Gladiator, Dakota North, Ma Murdock (haven't seen her in a long while), Matt's head, Gaudy Classic Daredevil, Young Matt, Current Daredevil, Foggy Nelson, Battlin' Jack Murdock, the Owl, Black Tarantula, Bullseye, Lady Bullseye, Tombstone, the Kingpin, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, the Hand.

And Andy Diggle will be taking over with #501, according to Da Q on his MySpace post. His credits include the current run on Thunderbolts and DC's The Losers and Green Arrow: Year One, so he strikes me as having the right credentials for the book (which, as Quesada noted, has an extremely impressive creator history since the 80s).

Brubaker's depature with #500 (#120, v.2 numbering) will make for a 39-issue run (a few of those more than regular size), a very good length these days; the opening arc (#82-86) and everything since Rucka's co-written period (#105-present) have been excellent; the intervening stuff a bit more middling ("The Devil Takes A Ride" I found pretty dull, though the finale with Vanessa Fisk was a great ending for the character; the yearlong Mister Fear stuff went on longer than it needed to, though it reads a lot better collected). The current "Return of the King" promises to be a great finale (a preview for the first issue of that here by the way).

It is, of course, a beautiful cover. <3 Bermejo.

But what the fuck? Lady Bullseye gets more space and a better placement then Foggy OR Elektra?

It's not size that counts, it's how you use it.

Technically, I believe she and Foggy are about the same; Eleka's smaller, though what's more unusual about her rendering is that it gives Bullseye two spots (Stilt-Man was robbed, I tells ya!).

And that's ridiculous. Foggy's been there with him since ... forever? He's the only human who's always been there for him. Lady Bullseye is a new knock-off villain.

I don't think Djurdjevic was precisely calibrating everything to size-to-historical importance ratios.

I mean, Dakota's a far less significant figure in the grand scheme than Karen Page, but they're the same size; but Dakota, like LB, is a central figure in the current run and story.

Yeah, but it's just kinda annoying because LB doesn't have the staying power that Elektra and Foggy do, y'know? In ten years someone'll look at that cover and be like "Who's that ninja chick", but they'll know who Elektra and Foggy are.

Do you know what I'm really waiting for?

Djurdjevic doing proper pencils.

I''m a big fan of the guy, followed him from Concept Art, and his covers are one of the most dynamic in the business. But his pencils...gorgeous. He's done some interior work, notably in Thor, but it's all CG and while I admire the hell out of his CG covers, for interiors they lack that dynamic quality that pencils and ink (even digital ink - look at All-Star Supes) add to the page.

It's a gorgeous cover. But I don't like his Foggy.

Yeah, I wasn't sure who that was at first.

But the ladies are all really hot.

I have a lot of little nitpicks, like Foggy and Luke and sameface across the whole board, but the total is astonishing.
