Batgirl #3
From this week's Batgirl.

So, Steph is fighting Scarecrow, and losing, since the antidote in Cass' belt is out-of-date for the new fear serum and Steph is kind of hallucinate-y.

That's so not a good font for the Batgirl name.

She bamfs away before the cops can come, and Babs invites her back to the Batcave.

The thing in the tube is the new Batgirl costume, with the purple ribbing. Where did she get it on such short notice? Was she banking on Steph proving her wrong all along? Problematic to say the least; either the costume comes out of nowhere or Babs was being a truly epic asshole.

Not sure how I feel about the oath, either; makes sense for Babs, she's always struck me as a very oath-oriented person, who takes ceremonies and the making official of things very seriously. And I love how firmly this grounds the legacy as belonging to Babs - her choice and her voice is the first and last in choosing a successor, here, which makes me far happier than the handover in NML, which never sat well with me. On the other hand, the candle is Dick and Bruce's thing, and it feels a bit weird to have anyone else appropriating that.

Anyway, the narration and pop psych all through the ish is fairly stilted and awkward, and I found the Scarecrow fight kind of predictable and cliche (did anyone actually not see "I'm Batgirl" coming?). But if that's what it takes to force Babs out of this passive-aggressive emo bullshit and start writing her normally again, I'll take it. Hell, Steph on the last page joyously jumping around in the new outfit actually genuinely made me smile. For a Batbook these days, that's a pretty good trick.

Wasn't that, like, only a few issues in to her series that she started talking? I'm pretty sure it was in the first year/12 issues at least.

I don't remember. I liked her because she was mute, but then they took that away and it was all down hill from there.
