Batgirl #3
From this week's Batgirl.

So, Steph is fighting Scarecrow, and losing, since the antidote in Cass' belt is out-of-date for the new fear serum and Steph is kind of hallucinate-y.

That's so not a good font for the Batgirl name.

She bamfs away before the cops can come, and Babs invites her back to the Batcave.

The thing in the tube is the new Batgirl costume, with the purple ribbing. Where did she get it on such short notice? Was she banking on Steph proving her wrong all along? Problematic to say the least; either the costume comes out of nowhere or Babs was being a truly epic asshole.

Not sure how I feel about the oath, either; makes sense for Babs, she's always struck me as a very oath-oriented person, who takes ceremonies and the making official of things very seriously. And I love how firmly this grounds the legacy as belonging to Babs - her choice and her voice is the first and last in choosing a successor, here, which makes me far happier than the handover in NML, which never sat well with me. On the other hand, the candle is Dick and Bruce's thing, and it feels a bit weird to have anyone else appropriating that.

Anyway, the narration and pop psych all through the ish is fairly stilted and awkward, and I found the Scarecrow fight kind of predictable and cliche (did anyone actually not see "I'm Batgirl" coming?). But if that's what it takes to force Babs out of this passive-aggressive emo bullshit and start writing her normally again, I'll take it. Hell, Steph on the last page joyously jumping around in the new outfit actually genuinely made me smile. For a Batbook these days, that's a pretty good trick.

I can imagine Bruce would have had a spare Batgirl costume around the place, for development work (or he just wanted Tim to look pretty), to make sure there was one top of the line model around if Cass ever needed one.

I do wish they took this to more of an extreme with the Scarecrow. He should really be analysing the mental weaknesses of each opponent and specifically asking them challenging questions...you know, rather than just gabbling on about fear all the time.

This wasn't a bad issue. I just wish Cassandra actually figured into this book somehow. I know she's going to appear sooner or later, and maybe it'll be worth the wait and blow my mind, but it just seems sort of wrong that she's only mentioned once in passing, and the characters almost act like she was never Batgirl at all.

I'm glad Babs is being nice again. I can't say I'm that interested in the Wendy subplot, wherever that's going, though.

2009-10-14 10:29 pm UTC (link)
Scarecrow: "But if you stay, you're forced to face yourself...NO ONE is brave enough to face who they really are!"

Steph: "I am."

WOOOOT! THANK YOU!! Finally someone hit what makes Steph so great. She knows her many shortcomings and she isn't afraid of them, nor too ashamed to hide them. Unlike the other heroes, she doesn't have the ego that makes her afraid of looking like a failure. She might know she is, but she doesn't care because she knows she's got to do SOMETHING, better than NOTHING.

Go Steph!

and also...FINALLY, someone's pledged to give her the guidance that she has been in sore need of since she first appeared. FINALLY! There should be no more excuses for DC to let her fail over and over again as she had in the past, because oh noes! She's a wild card. FUCK THAT SHIT! DC you better get on the ball here and knock it off with the idiotic rookie act. Yeah, she's nowhere near as skilled as the other guys, but she's never been this lame before. OY!

ANd yay for Babs dropping the annoying emo act! Leave that shit to Tim Drake, please!

The art is improving here, btw. I like! will have to pick this up as soon as I can.

Eek, I can't wait to pick this up tomorrow.

I like the oath thing, and it's nice that Babs is taking this seriously and is going with this "well, if you're not going to quit I may as well help you" attitude.

The "I pledge to you my guidance and support, you won't be alone" business is lovely, but I feel like if you take out the Batgirl aspect of it, that's something she really should be saying to Charlie.

Steph still has a mom, whereas Charlie has no family and seems really imprinted on Babs, not to mention the Batgirl identity. (Not saying Charlie should be Batgirl, but she should at least get a chance to fangirl Steph and Cass.)

I also really need to see Barbara reaching out to Cass again. Because really, the last time Cass we saw Cass saying she wasn't going to be Batgirl anymore, Bad Things happened. Babs had better get going with some well-meaning bat-stalking.

I wish I could separate what is showing hints of becoming a great story for Steph and Babs from how Cass and Charlie have been left out and disrespected, but it's hard.

I have come to the conclusion that Babs ditching Charlie is the equivalent of one year into Dick being Robin, Bruce just says "you know what? I need to brood alone. Hey Dick? Go live with Clark." D:

Still, I'm not going to be able to be totally happy until they deal with the elephant in the room that is Misfit. What about that other girl you promised to support and take care of, Babs?

Are we losing Snarky!Steph to Serious!Steph? I guess that's ok if she moves on, but... :(

An oath just like Bruce and Dick had. On the very spot that Bruce and Dick did. Inside the secret base where Bruce and Dick started. Sigh. How about recreating your own rich history and traditions, Babs? And Steph, you got kicked out of here once, remember? I would much rather have seen a clean start and some novelty.

I like that she took out Crane with a kick, so not all is meh for me.

Okay, I'm starting to like this book. I'm letting my guard down. Don't tell BQM about this.

The first three issues really just feel like setup, NOW it's time for the actual story to happen. Babs is able to be cool again, Steph has some Batcred and has established her nature as asskicker, Babs and Steph have the university thing (which, btw, could be a GREAT way to bring Helena into the book) although APPARENTLY she's an assistant prof when she should be IDK teaching advanced physics made difficult in binary.

backwards

I'm hoping that the Detective gets something unique about him soon, and can I just say I LOVE Steph's hallucination?

I like that Steph and Babs have a BOND now. Batladies! Interacting! With each other!

So, I guess the moral here is that Oracle is happy to guide and mentor a teenage girl . . . provided that said girl doesn't have any sort of learning disabilities or ADD. Oh, and if she feels like it. That's the most important part.

Not that I'm complaining about never, ever seeing Misfit again, mind you (even if that is a cruel thing to do to Helena).

Whatever its troubles, somewhere in the middle of this issue I came to the conclusion that this series is through with its trial run and has earned its spot on my pulls. The "I'm Batgirl" thing was visible from light years away, and the fight with the Scarecrow wasn't really all that great, but the feeling that I'm reading early Birds only minus all the femmeslash isn't one I'm gonna turn down so easy.

And I kind of like how Babs upgraded from one-time Sexy Librarian to Hot Teacher. It's always been a little weird to me that someone who protects their identity so heavily doesn't have any sort of cover, and a reminder that Hey, This Lady Is Really Damn Smart is always welcome.

Who else thinks:

1. Steph (finally) becoming Batgirl is the best thing, ever! This is exactly where she belongs. She is BATGIRL.

2. Cass should get her martial arts-style series, with Richard Dragon and Lady Shiva supporting. No more costumes or capes. Just using her wealth and wearing normal clothes to do business in and regular underwear/swimsuits for fighting, and adventuring the world on land and in the oceans. She is CASSANDRA CAIN, MARTIAL ARTS MASTER.
