This is Kamikaze 1946. It is the last book in the "Families of altered wars" series and deals with the American invasion of Japan "Operation Olympic". For understanding I have included the creators editorial (which were on the inside cover of each issue through out the series) so people can get a feeling for his intentions for the book and his alternate WW2 views :)

The editorial ? It's not mine to say. I loved this series. and Ted Noramu in general. After this he did a mini-series about the life of Hitler and the attack on Pearl Harbor.

She shot the pilot out of a Corsair? ... yah, my disbelief isn't suspended, sorry. And I was ok with the underwater bunker.

There is, IIRC, a story of an italian fighter being downed by ethiopians using slings.

To be able to do it with any kind of consistency would be crazy though :p

That was a common trope in DC's old Haunted Tank stories. They were able to do things like shoot down planes with their main gun, which is pretty amazing for a weapon not designed for firing at aircraft.

Yes, but if you do it in Unreal 2003, you get "EAGLE EYE!!!"

Well the German 88 mm gun was designed to flak aircraft, then the Germans leveled it and found it was good for taking out crap American tanks :)

You've sold me. I love alternate history so it was an easier sell from the beginning. The editorial at the end sealed the deal. He obviously knows his history well. From these posts I can see he has written this with facts, common sense and insight.

At least he's aware of how many MILLIONS of lives (on both sides) his Author Appeal AU would cost if it had really happened that way, yes.

Same reason I have trouble getting into the Crimson Skies background. In order to make the United States fertile ground for Air Pirate Adventures in the 20s and 30s, you have to break it up (with a second and probably unreasonably bloodless civil war). Grand fun, yes... but ten years later, what happens when the lights start going out all over Europe? Will England be able to hold out alone until Hitler gets around to stabbing Stalin in the back? (Probably not.) Will there be time to complete the Final Solution? And when it's all over, who winds up with the Bomb(s)?

I probably think about this stuff too much.

This disturbes me most of this series. About all the cool jets and the cute SS-girls in mini-shirts you may forget, that ín this timeline still smokes comes out the chimneys of Auschwitz.

Not to mention the Chinese, Korean, and Filipino women still being rounded up by the thousands and forced to serve as "Comfort Women" in Japanese military brothels.

Or the anthrax and plague bombs being dropped on the the civilian Chinese population, courtesy of the Imperial Army's Unit 731. People seem to have forgotten that that it was Japan, and not the US, that first used WMD's in World War II.

There are Times when Ted Noruma gets on flights of pure Fancy. The invasion of Panama by the Japanese and Germans is quite a stretch. For some reason through the whole multi series "families of altered wars" he never has Germany try to invade Britain for some reason. The longer the series went on the more he kept to a "one step beyond reality" approach. "Tigers of Terra" is mush more tongue in check.

The presence of the Luftwaffe here seriously turns me off. Contrary to what racists in the 40s thought, the Japanese could smack up the armies and navies of white countries just fine on their own, thnx.

I'll take "About what was left of the Kriegsmarine in 1944" for a thousand, thanks. ;)

Japan's success in WWII is all the more shocking when you take into account that they were basically fighting from an industrial base comparable to Mussolini's Italy, and yet they basically were able to take on all comers until numbers started working against them.

But yeah, if I want to see a "cool story, bro" about the Axis in Japan in WWII, I don't need white people hanging around.

Hmm. I'm pretty sure I picked up a volume of this series cheaply. I'm also pretty sure it was attempt--explicitly stated in the editorial at the end--to rehabilitate Hitler, complete with the notion that flying saucers and so on were Totally Real, Dude.

So yeah, it didn't really work for me. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Portraying him as a good person, at a minimum. My memory is hazy, but there may have been some Holocaust denial as well. I know where it is, and if I remember I'll dig it out tomorrow and reread the essay again, as it's possible my memory is screwing with me.
