Wonder Woman #36

This is from Wonder Woman #36, by Simone and Lopresti.

Tom asks Diana how he can trust her, since she said she didn't love him.

They kiss, then Tom says "And I... I don't belong here." He tells Diana to set them down.

I don't know if I articulated poorly or if you just failed to catch the point, so I'll do my best to make it as simple as possible.

My complaint wasn't really about the failed romance. That happens, that's fine. My complaint boils down to portrayal. These characters were portrayed like their relationship was deep and meaningful, when . . . it wasn't.

This metaphor will probably be horribly strained, because I've never actually read a romance novel, though I believe I have at least a decent grasp of the concept, but it seems to me like this is the "complication romance" in a romance novel that takes up space and everyone knows won't last . . . but is given the weight and dramatic centerpiece of the primary romance.

I guess I just never bought that Diana would effectively string Tom along the way she did, or have created elaborate wedding and children scenarios that she'd think its okay to share.

. . .

This whole romance may have been doomed from the beginning, but does that mean it had to twist characterization into Moebius cables along the way?

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; yes, yes. I know it's a simile, but similes are "like" metaphors, a-heh.

And yet, I disagree with every piece of your premise.

That's not what I wrote, and most people get that. Same with the "mother and homemaker" nonsense.

People who want to be outraged always will be, somehow.

Okay, fine. I read something in that wasn't there. That happens, too.

It surely does. If I put everything I misread or misinterpreted end to end, it would all the way around the world and hit me in the back of the head.

Seriously, no harm done at all. I'm sure I make that mistake more than anyone here.

Again, I'm not trying to rip on you, specifically. This just hit me in the emotional gut, and I got really pissed off.

You have been a god(dess?)send to WW since you came on board. You made her respectable again after the badness of her 1YL reboot.

But did you half to continue the Tom/Diana romance???

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; I keed, I keed.

It's fine, sorry if I gave offense, no worries at all.

But yeah, I'm kind of a 'play fair' writer. I don't like to negate. At the same time, Diana and Tom was never going to work, so a story about how it never was going to work seemed a compelling way to go.
