Wonder Woman #36

This is from Wonder Woman #36, by Simone and Lopresti.

Tom asks Diana how he can trust her, since she said she didn't love him.

They kiss, then Tom says "And I... I don't belong here." He tells Diana to set them down.

So, ultimately, Nemesis looks like the less crazy one. That's...diffeent.

Diana's vision of her future with Tom involve being married in what appears to be a Christian denomination church? Really? I know she's having a crisis of faith, but that comes as something of a surprise.

Plus given the more or less complete and utter dearth of Amazon mating throughout their history, how can they have a tradition.

Maybe I'm old fashioned or out of touch, but mating, in this context, implies to me a sort of relationship intended to produced offspring rather than just sex or pairing up. So I wouldn't say, for example, that a gay couple having sex is ever "mating", it's "having sex", or "making love", but not "mating".

Gee. Diana... you really ARE bad at this, but how about I make a suggestion? DTMF, he's not that into you. If you REALLY want kids to carry on the Amazonian traditions, why not adopt or get a sperm donor? You're freaking Wonder Woman!

Well obviously women can't want a baby without setting feminism back a hundred years. That misogynistic bitch. Thinking she'd like to be a mother -- how dare she?

I don't see the problem with the wedding, either. Diana's respecting his culture by agreeing to that style of wedding, while adding that they'd have to have an Amazon wedding as well. So what?

(that does beg the question, how do they even remember what an Amazon wedding involves since they've been girls-only for however long)

And as said, that wedding dress *is* gorgeous.

I think it's nice that Diana showed him a wedding that he could relate to instead of overwhelming him with more weird Amazon customs, since she's always about meeting halfway.

We're seeing that Diana (1) is worried about her own mortality, (2) is capable of making a mistake once in a while by rushing into a commitment with someone before she's sure of her love, and (3) actually has feelings of physical attraction for other people. This is very reassuring to me as a Wonder fan, because otherwise she's so far removed from humans that I can't relate. Show me someone who lives only for protecting the planet one-zero-zero-point-zero percent of the time and has to wake up alone every morning -- forever.

The whole thing was very sweet, fits with and resolves all the events up until now, and for me was perfect.

Here's how I see it. We are supposed to see that Diana is not in her own words "doing this very well". She wants Tom to understand what she meant by the whole "I don't love you" thing and the idea she was just using him as breeding stock (as she says the two of them alone could not have repopulated Themyscira alone and if she just wanted someone to breed with she knows a lot of smart, single hunky guys within the super-hero community). I think she's showing him (badly) exactly how much her feelings have grown from mere attraction even if she still doesn't "love" him (something she still never says). Diana's the one who screwed this up and here she's just not making it any better - which I think was Gail's point.

Tom/Diana are finished (for now I guess, Gail has said he's gone from the book, but some other writer will probably bring him back at some point) because of miscommunication even though they care for each other while the Alkyone/Achilles sexless political marriage is going ahead (later in the issue) because each side knows the score. It's a study in contrasts.

Two other things that came out of #36 for me:
1. Gail has said (in other places) that this was how it was going to play out from the get-go. Knowing that in hindsight and knowing that neither Heinberg, Picoult or any filler writer did anything more than make the long time super spy seem more like a "frat boy", I've been impressed in how the Tom/Diana relationship progressed. To be honest, I've never liked Tom more (as a WW character, I've always liked the Suicide Squad version of Nemesis) than in the last half dozen or so issues or believed until then that Tom could indeed be a suitable replacement for pre-Crisis Steve Trevor (which I think Heinberg clearly was aiming for). In fact, I was never MORE in favor of the Tom/Diana coupling than when it was over and I think that's a sign of good writing considering that when Gail took over the book Tom had very little personality to begin with.

2. Lopresti's art probably impressed me more in this issue than any other. In scenes like this precise facial expressions are very important (and more difficult for many artists than action scenes) and I think AL really nailed it. The chagrined Diana in the second to last panel basically says everything you need to know about the entire sequence.

Actually, did Superman have any fantasy sequences like this? Maybe something in "Last Son"? Cuz when he was the last of his species, he could arguably have even stronger issues with wanting to continue a legacy than Diana (even if he wasn't raised in Kryptonian culture).

Interesting discussion.

One thing you learn very early on is that once you take the pen off the paper, the story really doesn't belong to you any more, and people will come up with their own interpretations of the story no matter what you say or do.

Anyone who sees that, and knows my history, and assumes the message is, "A WOMAN HAS NO VALUE UNLESS SHE'S A HOMEMAKER AND MOTHER" is just on another planet. It's fine, it happens, but holy crap, that is completely out there.

I don't think that, neither does Diana. And let's not forget that it wasn't Diana who said "Babies babies babies," it was Hippolyta and after waiting 3000 years, I think she's entitled.

Most of the stuff in comics that is supposedly carrying a 'female perspective' is such incredible bullshit. It's interesting that THIS fairly common and human emotion, gets repurposed into something it never was. But that's the fun of fiction, its interactivity.

But no, that is not what this means, not even remotely, as many of you have already pointed out.

Haven't read all the thread yet, I bet it's a doozy.

:)
