Kat, mouse and pup regard the Moon
And each sees something different. Or do they? The silly profundity of KRAZY KAT, or maybe the profound silliness. This example is from February 23, 1941. As a kid reading books about the history of comics, I was baffled by the occasional samples of this darn Kat. It looked so crude and simple, it was just "off" in some way. What was supposed to be so great about it? But one day, a bit of perception clicked into place and I suddenly appreciated Harriman's genius.

	Ah well, it's one of those things that can't be explained. And there are no laws about what comics or music or cuisine you like, it's all preference. Most of the comics posted here make no impression on me, as far as that goes. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

You could spend years writing an annotated edition of Robert Anton Wilson. He packed so many obscure references into his fiction. The ILLUMINATUS trilogy alone works on any number of levels, and the puns in themselves are so clever.

I don't know if you can ever talk someone into liking a comic (or a band or a movie)by pointing out what you think they should enjoy. That hardly ever worked on me even as a kid. Sometimes you'll see someone comment about a strip and it raises your curiosity enough to give it a chance. But I don't really know if it's worth trying to convert anyone. You may never like KRAZY KAT, but there's lots of other great art out there.

	That language is so odd and haunting. POGO had the same use of a dialect all its own but I think KRAZY KAT's was more poetic. (Reply to this) (Parent)
