When Billy and Courtney Met the Shade

It's during the Princes of Darkness, and Billy and Courtney have been trapped in the Shadowlands by Obsidian. Billy's powers have been blocked, and as a result Stargirl has learned that he's really a teenage in reality.

After battling Obsidian's mother, who along with Obsidian's adopted father and Sentinel, his biological father, have all been trapped here, the pair begin to bond.

And made it rather clear they disliked it. Of course which makes no sense.

Billy's age wasn't public to them so they though Captain Marvel was a 30 or whatever year old hitting on Courtney. And now when they found out and said it the same way it made them seem like they disliked the idea of the public thinking the two were a couple.

In short the JSA leaders are dicks.

I loved Billy/Courtney, I always considered it the "old-fashioned" JSA version of the Superboy/Wondergirl romance. Too bad it seems the new JSA writing team doesn't seem interested in the Marvels (it's not like anyone else uses them). Billy Batson IMO is the most underused character in the DCU (and I say Billy and not Cap). According to Winnick's "First Thunder", he's been Captain Marvel since he was 8, been a JLA member since at least 12, been a JSA member at 15/16. He has more experience and power (when he's Cap) than anyone else the same age and what respect does he get? Wonder Woman acting OOC in Meltzer's JLA re-launch saying he's just a "child" so shouldn't be part of the tea,, continued jokes about the "Big Red Cheese", Wildcat asking if Mary Marvel was available (before he knew her real age), and the JSA elders quashing his romance with Courtney (notice we see no apologies when they find out he's really only 16). DC's decision to age the Marvels means that Billy is now 17, he's basically a near-adult and probably of all the heroes his age he's the most mature and responsible and yet still looked down on as a "kid"? Not fair. I liked that in Courtney he had someone his own age other than Freddy and Mary within the hero community he could talk to.

Also dislike the Atom Smasher/Courtney thing which was just skeevy to me (sorry) even if she just did turn the age of legal consent. He's 25 at least. In JSA #25 Billy and Courtney are about to kiss and then one issue later (when the Marvel story is over) she denies to her friend she's interested in him and is back crushing on Atom Smasher. And the fact that some "possible" future from an early JSA age implied Court/Atom Smasher got married (turning them into a OTP) was insane considering how many possible DCU futures never come to pass.

	Yep it's rather sad how the relationship got destroyed but it's how it was brushed away recently irked me when the JSA'ers said they broke up the two for good reasons. Which they said even after finding out Billy was Captain Marvel. (Reply to this) (Parent)

Because every other girl is interested in Tim. Except Cass Cain, who's into terrorists (Black Wind), kinda dumb superclones (Conner) and people who stalk her (Zero).

Oh, and Sal. Who Beechen felt would be a good match for Cass by making a male duplicate of her minus the winning personality. Seriously, beginning a conversation with "My dad was beaten to death in front of me when I was seven and I went mute for several years" isn't exactly an icebreaker.

	I dunno, for the Bat family that's really casual conversation. Spoiler/Steph/NOTBATGIRL's current love interest has that beat by making a joke about another girl being on her period, the first time he talks to Steph. That nose dives into 'Kill you with my eyes' territory. (Reply to this) (Parent)

He always struck me as being kind of thick. Like Mary is (was?) perpetually a sweet girl from the 50's/60's, I always got the impression that Billy was stuck in Opie Taylor/Beaver Cleaver mode as the world moved past him. That's just my impression anyway.

To put it another way, Courtney seems to get smitten over the kind of guy you'd bring home to meet your parents, which seems an awfully boring kind of person to pair up with someone as stubborn and energetic as Courtney.

I dunno. One of my "things" is vivacious blond with an attitude hooks up with eccentric inventor...it's why I liked the first forty-ish issues of Birds of Prey and why I 'ship Penny/Sheldon.

Don't confuse brains with attitude. Billy is certainly not thick, you don't become a successful investigative radio reporter at age 15 without a deal of brains.

He's also not angsty, thank god, but that's nothing to do with how smart he is.

And Penny/Sheldon? Given his apparent asexuality, that's just.. either optimistic beyond my ability to express or just plain perverse.

	The thing about this arc is that Billy pulls that redirect the Shazam lightning trick in almost every other appearance. There's no way the JSAers wouldn't have seen him change in the middle of a huge battle. (Reply to this)
