Sergio Aragones Destroys DC
I don't remember ever seeing this posted here or on the old s_d, so I thought I'd post it.
This 40-page comic is from the late 1990s and it's called "Sergio Aragones destroys DC". It was written by Mark Evanier and illustrated by Sergio Aragones. Nine full-page scans and additional panels behind the cut.
(I tried to post as much as possible but still keep in the 1/3 rule. There's 17 scans but some of them are only 1-2 panels. Together the scans would make about 12 full pages, which stays under the 1/3 rule. Just FYI in case someone starts wondering about the number of scans, and I hope this kind of posting is okay. If not, I'll understand.)
The comic starts with Martian Manhunter walking on the street at night. He suddenly hears someone yelling in distress. He goes to see what's going on and finds a hysterical Hawkman.
The comic has Evanier and Aragones talking like that in the middle of the different comic segments. Anyway, Aragones tells in flashback that he went to the DC offices to offer his artwork, but DC people didn't even want to see his pictures. So then Aragones decided he needs to start drawing superhero comics to raise his profile as an artist. Evanier feels reluctant about the idea, but Aragones is determined to do superhero comics.
The comic cuts into origin stories of some DC superheroes. First one is Superman.
The story about Jor-El and his rocket is told, but I had to cut it to keep the scan page count smaller for daily_scans.
Superman saves the kid but trashes the van and a few other cars. Hawkman appears and tells Superman that they're doomed. So Superman goes with him.
Evanier whines that the style of Aragones is inappropriate for Superman, but Aragones is happy with his comic ("I draw zactly like Curt Swan!").
Then we move on to Aragones' take on Batman.
Bruce eventually grows up and chooses his bat-motif and stuff.
Batman finally deduces that Joker's in the amusement park, and so he goes there. He finds a clown and pummels him, but it turns out to be the wrong clown.
Wonder Woman's story also gets interrupted by Hawkman yelling that they're doomed.
Then there's a segment of the Legion of Superheroes but I haven't read much Legion, so I won't bother posting pages of that part. Hawkman appears again and he's asked who's trying to kill everyone. He replies: "I cannot tell you! I cannot tell you because it's too horrible! And also because Sergio hasn't figured that part out yet!"
The JLA superheroes are finally gathered together. They discuss what's going on and who's scaring Hawkman so much. They wonder if there has been any attempts on their life recently or if anything suspicious has been happening. Flash starts with his thoughts on this:
The story gets interrupted with pages where Sergio tries to think of a cool villain. Finally he decides, and we return back to the superhero meeting, where Batman announces: "Despite a total lack of clues, I have figured out who's behind this!". He says the name, and it's Johnny DC. Other characters have trouble remembering him, but Wonder Woman explains:
Johnny DC tells stories about his woes over the years and explains in the end why he's so bitter about the DC superheroes now:
Batman comes up with a plan, and the heroes manage to defeat Johnny DC.
After that, there's some more of the meta stuff that with Evanier and Aragones.
Aragones' stuff always rules and his take on the DC heroes is damn funny, IMO. I had to trim a lot of stuff that I otherwise would've wanted to post. So I recommend you to look up this comic, it's fun. :)
