Squaddies and Saturday mornings

The squat-bodied Marvel equivalent of the Super Friends started airing last week, with the awesomely named pilot "And Lo... a Pilot Shall Come!" The premise is apparently: saving Superhero City and a MacGuffin sword-fragment-of-the-week from Doctor Doom's Lethal Legion of cartoon-villainy that lives right next door in Villainsville.

A couple highlights: MODOK and Abomination fighting over superhero-Mortal Kombat, Hulk hitchhiking, surprise Doombots, and bringing in this guy in the second episode:

[Reptil]

[Avengers: the Initiative cover]

Only, y'know, with slight changes:

Ms. Marvel is the kinda mean, hard-ass boss of SHIELD (including Cap and Hawkeye so far), who are sorta-ally-rivals to Iron Man's Superhero Squad. Silver Surfer talks like a surfer dude. Thor's got the thick Ridiculous Olde Accente. Captain America keeps talking like it's still the 1930s (Those were the days. Hot jazz and skinny eyebrows. Wha?). Hulk is cartoon-dumb. And also the mayor of Superhero City has Stan Lee's voice.

I kinda wonder how many liberties they'll have to take when they get to super-deformed Punisher though:

Aaand the opening sequence:

I hate those Squaddies. I'm sure people can relate, Doom.

ETA: Now with voices besides Iron Man's and Doom's. Ms. Marvel is Azula:

We're not talking about V here ... they modified the traditional Marvel Universe for little kids. As a dad of a 5 and an 8 year old who both love Iron Man and Wolverine, I'm just happy there's a version of Wolverine where he takes three swipes with his blades and the villan's pants fall down rather than falling into a heap of blood and guts. The show is crisp, funny, and there are enough similarities to the traditional Marvel Universe that they can crack some good jokes for the comic loving adults ... I mean, poking fun at the fact that Captain America has been around forever (Hey, the good old PWB - Power and Water Building ... remember when that was built? Those were the days HOT jazz and skinny eyebrows ... I died laughing and the kids ran around saying "those were the days, hot jazz and skinny eyebrows" for a week without even knowing what they were talking about ...). As a parent who loves Marvel, this is a welcome "kid friendly" addition.

Hey, I loved that line too, it's just too bad it's not all as awesome as that. Half the characters are great, but they didn't even try with Doctor Doom--they don't even hint at his rivalry with "RICHAAARDS" yet. (You should try getting an account here, BTW.)
