Squaddies and Saturday mornings

The squat-bodied Marvel equivalent of the Super Friends started airing last week, with the awesomely named pilot "And Lo... a Pilot Shall Come!" The premise is apparently: saving Superhero City and a MacGuffin sword-fragment-of-the-week from Doctor Doom's Lethal Legion of cartoon-villainy that lives right next door in Villainsville.

A couple highlights: MODOK and Abomination fighting over superhero-Mortal Kombat, Hulk hitchhiking, surprise Doombots, and bringing in this guy in the second episode:

[Reptil]

[Avengers: the Initiative cover]

Only, y'know, with slight changes:

Ms. Marvel is the kinda mean, hard-ass boss of SHIELD (including Cap and Hawkeye so far), who are sorta-ally-rivals to Iron Man's Superhero Squad. Silver Surfer talks like a surfer dude. Thor's got the thick Ridiculous Olde Accente. Captain America keeps talking like it's still the 1930s (Those were the days. Hot jazz and skinny eyebrows. Wha?). Hulk is cartoon-dumb. And also the mayor of Superhero City has Stan Lee's voice.

I kinda wonder how many liberties they'll have to take when they get to super-deformed Punisher though:

Aaand the opening sequence:

I hate those Squaddies. I'm sure people can relate, Doom.

ETA: Now with voices besides Iron Man's and Doom's. Ms. Marvel is Azula:

char: reptil, char: ms. marvel/carol danvers

That's an excellent question - what on earth are they going to do with the punisher?

The same thing that they're doing to the guy with the GUT-RENDING METAL CLAWS ON HIS HANDS, I'd imagine.

Give him paralysing laser guns probably and let him be a meanie.

Wow, so Reptil is a pre existing character? I thought he was made for the super squad show (like Harley Quinn).

That Initiative issue was his first and only appearance in 616 so far.

I think that he was created for Super Hero Squad and the toyline first, and then they decided to do a special about him to induct him into 616.

This has been driving me nuts ever since the episodes first aired: Is Reptil from anything? And if not, why did they need to make him? It's not like there's not scads of teenage characters already in the Marvelverse who could be the newbie in the cast.

Since he's Hispanic, he's probably an attempt to add diversity. Which I tend to applaud, but he feels kinda forced. Kinda REALLY forced. Might've been better to try to use one of the existing Hispanic heroes of Marvel, like, off the top of my head, Living Lightning.

Is hair showing 90s jim lee cyclops the most popular costume or something.Don't get me wrong, Jim Lee Cyclops is what I grew up and think of when Cyclops come to my mind thanks to the 90s cartoon and the period I collected comics and the cards. Wolverine got his old yellow blue costume from the cockrum/bryne days instead of the correct costume. Yeah how the heck they going to deal with Punisher, Ghost Rider is more plausable in that show snice he would just give the criminals a the penance stare and make them feel bad over stealing somehting or making kids cry.

So basically, this is Marvel's answer to The Brave And The Bold?

Not really. It's geared even younger, with a lot more toilet humor.

No.

Brave and the Bold is much better, while still being aimed at a younger audience.

This feels more like Marvel's answer to Baby Looney Tunes.

Phooey. They should have done a toon version of Chris Giarrusso's Mini Marvels. Loved his strips.

Ugh, it's a shame they can't have a regular Marvel universe toon. Sort of like the current X-Men toon, but LET WOLVIE Slash something! He looks so sad with those claws. He can never really use them on NickToons! :`(

To be fair, at least they're including more than just the usual 'must be in everything' characters. I mean, yeah, they've got Hulk, Wolverine, Cap, etc., but they've also got Ka-Zar (yay! Ka-Zar rocks!), Black Widow, Songbird (THERE'S an interesting choice, considering her background), Misty Knight, War Machine, the Warriors Three, Black Panther, Valkyrie, Falcon, uh, some guy I don't recognize with an 'M' on his head... I can't speak towards the quality of the show itself, since I haven't seen it and that video won't play for me (any chance of a URL?), but at least they're making sure to include a fair amount of semi-obscure characters alongside the marketing magnets. If this leads kids to start looking up back issues and reading comics that are actually GOOD, I'm all for it.
A few questions/comments:
I note that Iceman is now wearing a speedo. Faugh. He's COVERED IN ICE! Why does he need a speedo?
I love how Cap is riding his shield there. He's all 'WHEEEE!'
I note that Wasp is among the cast. Does this mean she'll be coming back in the comics, I wonder?
I'll be interested in seeing how they handle the mythological aspects of Thor. I mean, they've got several Asgardians in the background there, so I presume that they ARE going to be doing that, which is rather interesting consider the usual attitude of the censors concerning religion of any kind, let alone old, non-mainstream religions.
I had to laugh when I saw Wolvie. Look at his CLAWS! For the love of Thoth, look at those claws! They look like they're made of plastic! DULL plastic, at that - the sort of plastic they use in cheapo kiddie toys. If those things can slice through a loaf of bread properly, let alone a person, I'll be very surprised.

I rememeber getting that issue with Reptil. It was an okay issue no qualms about it. But then I found out it was just a SuperHero Squad intro kinda sorta and Reptil hasn't appeared in 616 since making me feel supremely duped.

We're not talking about V here ... they modified the traditional Marvel Universe for little kids. As a dad of a 5 and an 8 year old who both love Iron Man and Wolverine, I'm just happy there's a version of Wolverine where he takes three swipes with his blades and the villan's pants fall down rather than falling into a heap of blood and guts. The show is crisp, funny, and there are enough similarities to the traditional Marvel Universe that they can crack some good jokes for the comic loving adults ... I mean, poking fun at the fact that Captain America has been around forever (Hey, the good old PWB - Power and Water Building ... remember when that was built? Those were the days HOT jazz and skinny eyebrows ... I died laughing and the kids ran around saying "those were the days, hot jazz and skinny eyebrows" for a week without even knowing what they were talking about ...). As a parent who loves Marvel, this is a welcome "kid friendly" addition.
