Uncanny X-Men #515

Four scans from Uncanny X-Men #515, in which Greg Land mostly manages to not obstruct the story.

While awaiting Land's hopefully-soon reassignment elsewhere, the best to hope for is that his work is reasonably easy to skim over without any particularly grotesque imagest to draw your attention.  This issue is surprisingly muted, I must say.

Anyway, as the new microstate of Utopia gets up and running, and Psylocke checks in on another member of the Science Team:

Psylocke interrupts a council of various senior X-Men (Cyclops, Emma Frost, Storm, Professor X, Namor) and Iceman to tell them about his death.

As Cyclops leaves for a meeting with the mayor, Professor X notes that he wasn't at his most empathetic; Cyclops is really stressed and says that empathy is at a premium at the moment.

Later...

Fraction writes a really good Beast, and, whenever things aren't getting too cluttered with characters, he can do some pretty good work here.

I dunno. While Scott had undoubtedly made many questionable decision, I am okay with his leadership overall. And I think finally being put in charge of the X-Men helped Scott grow as a character in ways that would have been impossible if he was still playing second fiddle to Xavier.

Yeah, he's grown into a total asshole who orders people murdered and believes everything has to be done his way.

Swap "orders people murdered" to "fucks with their brains" and that's pretty much Xavier.

Difference is, Scott isn't supposed to be like that. They've taken him too far and it's really hurting him. Certain characters can be taken to extremes. Scott was not one of them.

a decent Xavier characterization has him almost as perfect as he acts.

I agree..but Xavier is also the guy who used to order Mystique to kill people didn't he? (never actually read series)

Well, it wasn't always "kill." Sometimes, it meant stealing something valuable, or saving a mutant from a situation that requires infiltration and manipulation. In the first issue of the series, Xavier pretty much stated that he wanted her to do the kind of missions that he thought the more idealistic X-Men would balk at.

The series was actually pretty fun fluff, particularly under BKV. Yeah, she was basically his version of X-Factor (...frick, or was it X-Force? The all stabby all the time team) but I think he did try to convince her to have certain qualms about just shooting everything as the answer. ...I seem to be thinking he also put something like a bomb in her to keep her from acting out of line but I might be thinking of a Simpsons gag or a potential Speed sequel.

Or, as I see it, he had to step up to the plate and make some hard decisions in order to protect his team and what's left of the mutant race. Without Xavier to watch over him, he became more confident in himself and his abilities. I will freely acknowledge that the results were far from perfect, but the same could be said for everyone who ever led any incarnation of the X-Men.

He could have stepped up in so many better ways. Now, I don't hold them moving to harsher methods against them, I've been thinking they should be doing that for years, but it's the way he's doing it. Scott's gone froma man I used to respect to a man I hate and want to see punished. And I can['t even comfort myself by think it's Emma's fault because I like Emma and her controlling or even influencing him like that damages her as well.

One of my biggest issues with Scott right now is his hypocrisy. He has become everything he hated in Magneto. Scott used to be a respected and moral leader but now he is so corrupt by his power and is not listening to anyone but himself. He has got this massive complex now that he is some saviour to "his people". Sound familiar. And if Magneto actions were seen as villainous then so should Cyclops. Just because he's hiding behind the X doesn't mean it is more nobler or just. It's just tarnished Xavier's name more than Charles ever could.

Now, now, IMNSHO, Scott still has ways to go before he reaches Magneto's level of extremism. The way he is going, he may get there some day, but we'll cross this bridge as it comes.
