Would the judges we know really ever do something like that?

Wishful thinking.

I kind of feel bad for all the other Judges, too. They're all stuck down here, bringing people in from other places, and I guess they're just trying to get by. There's no place for them to go home to.

No people to love them and sing them hymns. No one who remembers their stories.

All the people we remember . . . they died a long time ago. I can't even show Mirror what it was like—King locked those memories away from her.

Really? But why!

I don't know. There's a lot I don't know about everything that happened. Weaver's tapestry, why Surgeon did what he did. Why he was killed for it.

Maybe there's something in those memories that has more power than we know.

King probably thinks it would do more harm than help if he decided to lock them away. If the Judges could make a wish, what do you think they would wish for? To have their world back?

I don't know. I think . . . it would depend on the judge. King and Queen and Trickster . . . some of the others, too. They might not change anything at all.

And some, like Weaver . . . I think, sometimes, that maybe . . . it's the opposite. Nothing is meant to last forever, but they've been so long without an end. Maybe living isn't what they're hoping for at all.

I guess living forever sounds good in theory but not in practice.

It's . . . something I think has to be hard.
