Believe me—I understand and sympathize with your feelings. The idea of those you love going into your heart for your sake, and knowing that as a result you may be responsible for them coming to harm is something that is not easy to bear.

But we must try to distance ourselves from the situation. Try reversing it—wouldn't we feel wretched if someone we cared about was suffering, but we were unaware and unable to help because they wanted to protect us?
