Hotel →TWD: Gwen, Flash, Harry, Peter (+ MJ)
[The door hadn't moved while she was standing there, waiting.

She was at the first door, first floor, and the hotel lobby was just there, within her line of vision. She was dressed practically in purple rainboots, jeans and a seafoam hoodie. She had a pack with her that included all the supplies Ms. Carter, Mr. Rogers and Doctor Banner had provided, both medical and nutritional. Her dad's old service revolver was at her hip, his old belt notched to accommodate her much smaller frame. She leaned against the crumbling wallpaper beside the door, and she willed the door not to move before the others arrived. If the door did jump, it would take hours for it to show up somewhere again, and she'd need to restart the process of combing the hallways in search of the physical markers that indicated the right door.

She was nervous, and she twisted a mauve beanie between her fingers while she tried to talk herself out of the sensation, as if some logic could somehow turn off the survival instinct in her brain. She was nervous about seeing this Peter for the first time, too, and she was nervous about Harry's deteriorating condition. She'd tried to factor the likelihood of Harry's accompanying them, but she gave up about an hour in; it all depended on the strength of his feelings for Mary Jane, and that was something she'd never felt comfortable asking. Flash was literally the only thing she wasn't worried about.

On the bright side, at least she wouldn't melt the hallway while she waited. Movement in the lobby caught her attention, and she pushed herself away from the wall and called out.] Over here!

[Flash looked like he was heading into battle. He carried two black cases filled with guns in his hands, a backpack over his shoulder and a shotgun slung at his side. He was wearing 'work jeans' with boots, a t-shirt, hoodie and a knitted grey cap. He was trying not to look excited. Killing zombies was going to be fun even if hanging out with this group of people might result in some after school special heart-to-hearts he could probably live without. Oh and MJ might die that would suck balls.]

Yoooo. [Flash waved and walked over to Gwen, set his shit down and then gave her a bear hug whether she wanted one or not.] Nice gun, dude. [He noticed the revolver right away. It looked like something out of those Sin City movies and that was pretty dang cool. His shotgun was more country boy get off my lawn.]

[Peter was more nervous about seeing Gwen than he was the zombies and, you know, potential death. Maybe his priorities were skewed but he couldn't help it; this really, really wasn't how he'd wanted it to happen. Harry would be there, too, and Flash, and MJ when they found her, so basically he'd be seeing everyone for the first time under some pretty awkward circumstances. But, whatever. He'd deal. He just had to stay calm, keep focused, and try hard not to make things any weirder than they were already going to be.

Right. No problem.

He was weaponless, figuring Flash had that covered, and the backpack slung over his shoulder only had basic supplies. Yeah, okay, he wasn't thrilled about using a gun even if it wasn't practical, but he didn't realize his powers would be rendered useless in the door. Sneakers, jeans, and a hoodie made him look like a regular college kid, and his approach came on the tail end of Flash and Gwen's hug.

Do. Not. Make. It. Weird. That was his silent mantra, and he smiled in a way that he hoped was totally cool and not at all awkward. And he didn't even stare-- well, okay, he didn't stare much. He was trying, but the last time he'd seen Gwen alive she was falling, falling, and afterward she'd been motionless in his arms. Dead. It didn't matter that this Gwen might not be his, all that mattered was that she was here. She was alive. He kind of forgot Flash was there for a second or two, and his expression lit up in an embarrassingly telling way before he realized it and immediately tried to pretend like nothing had happened.] Hey. [He raised his hand in a sort of half wave. Super smooth.]

[Harry was, like usual, on time. Something about adhering to a strict business model and making an impression. He relived those talks on his way down the hall, the nearest thing resemling a heart-to-heart that he'd ever had with his father was a discussion on business conduct. So even if everyone else was already at the door, Harry told himself that he wasn't late. It felt very important that he not be late. Irrationally, his own punctuality seemed monumental. Like they all might realize that he didn't belong there if he turned up late, like they might send him home. Harry was keenly aware of the fact that he didn't have any powers or familiarity with zombies, so it was easy for him to realize and bring into focus all of the reasons that he might not be of any use. He didn't want to give anyone a chance to doubt him, to say that he couldn't, that he wasn't good enough or strong enough.

Nevermind how unwell he looked. Wane, although his shoulders were straight when he walked up to the others. Waxy, his skin took on a color in the same family of gray as his cotton shirt. Even so, he was clearly alert, having noteably eyed Flash and Peter during his approach. His blue stare ultimately fell to Gwen, and Harry crossed his arms over the ever-narrowing expanse of his chest like he was keenly aware of himself and waiting for someone to suggest he go home. He wasn't going anywhere. A handgun, his father's, was secured in the band of his jeans, held tight by the clinch of a leather belt.]

Is there a plan?

[Gwen returned Flash's hug with the ease of someone who had given into Flash's rambunctious version of affection years ago. She looked down at the service revolver when he eyed it, and she knew it was old fashioned when compared to his firepower, but she figured it would be lucky; she hoped it would be lucky.

She was about to start expounding on her process for narrowing the door, because it seemed the logical thing to do given the circumstances, but she heard Peter's approach, and she stepped back and stared. Staring wasn't polite, and her mom would've nudged her had she been standing there, but she'd kind of gotten used to the older Peter, and she hadn't been expecting one that looked like her memories again. She stared, and then she cleared her throat and was saved from a greeting by Harry's not-late-thank-you arrival.

She wasn't surprised Harry was there. Despite having no proof that his affections for Mary Jane were strong enough to lead him to embark on a rescue mission, she suspected it was true. He crossed his arms over his chest, and the smile she gave him was deliberately warm. She wasn't sure he knew how to shoot that gun, but that didn't seem as important as supporting his presence there. And he asked a question which made it easier to ignore all the awkwardness present.]

I think we go in, orient ourselves and ensure we can defend ourselves in the setting, and then message Mary Jane to see if we can find her location based on ours. We can worry about exit strategy once we find her. [She reached for the doorknob.] They probably need to be shot in the head or decapitated. I'm not sure of the actual source here. Chances are, you'll change if you're bitten, and no one knows if that remains permanent once we get home, so let's try not to?

[Her hand touched the knob and, without warning, the door engulfed them.

It seemed harmless. A little cold, obviously fall, humid, so somewhere Eastern. They were in the middle of a small street, dusk, and the houses on either side of the road were quiet and dark. A winding road could be seen heading up to some mountains, and water trickled somewhere in the distance.

Gwen looked around, and they all seemed to be in one piece, and it took her a few seconds to notice that something felt different. She'd been practicing with the electrostatic effect, and she reached back for her pack and deliberately tried to stick, but it didn't work.]

[Flash turned to see Peter and automatically pulled him into a bear hug, too.] Hey, bro. [He was too busy hugging to notice the awkwardness that was happening between Peter and Gwen. Flash was glad for that. When Harry arrived, he just gave a sup and offered a fist bump because he knew Harry wasn't big on hugs and he didn't want to crush the little rich dude.]

[Was he listening to Gwen talk? Not really. Flash's adrenaline was pumping like he was getting ready for a big game or about to go on a mission. He thought they'd get dropped into the beginning of a L4D level with spooky sounds and the distant grumbling of zombies not too far away. When the middle of the street was well, just kind of a quiet street, he sighed in disappointment. With a glance to Gwen and then Peter.] Your powers working? [He didn't bring his suit, obviously. If something went wrong it would mean an uncontrollable Venom rampaging through zombie city. Not exactly what they wanted.]

[Great timing, Harry. Really. Although maybe it was a good thing that he'd only gotten as far as staring, because if there was one thing Peter could do really, really well it was ramble. And Flash's hug was a distraction too, a welcome one; things might be weird with everyone else but at least he could count on Flash to bulldoze right over all that.] Hey yourself, bro. [He glanced over his shoulder at Harry, who didn't look so hot. He thought maybe he should be in bed instead of a hallway with a gun, but there was no time to argue, and neither of the other two seemed to have a problem with it. Gwen's smile was warm, and he still thought it was a little weird, but whatever. Focus. The goal was to get MJ and get out all in one piece.

His greeting was a nod, which was more than Harry gave him or Flash, and then he turned his attention to Gwen's plan.] Go for the head, don't get bit. Works for me. [And then, bam, they were inside-- well, outside, but clearly in the door. At least there wasn't a hoard of the undead waiting for them right away.

It took a couple of seconds to realize it, but he did. He felt different. Off. Almost three years had passed since the spider bite, and now he just felt... normal. He still had his mechanical shooters, but his actual powers were gone.] No, man. I-- [He paused, blinked, and looked at Gwen. Peter definitely didn't remember her having powers, but clearly, he'd missed out on a lot.] I think I'll take one of those guns now, Flash.

[With a blink, everything changed. The street laid out before them was strewn with what seemed to be the first note of changing leaves. There was a serenity in the street's utter abandonment, if serenity could be eerie. Harry'd never been anywhere like this before, and not just in the sense that he'd never been to the land of the living dead. He'd never lived anywhere that reflected this street's kind of docile, suburbanite layout. There were trees taller than any structure, and mountains in the distance. The only sign of life aside from themselves seemed to be the rustling of trees and overgrown grass in the yards of the little houses that dotted the street.] Well, this is fucking creepy.

[In the following moments, Harry realized that his first observation had been true on levels he hadn't even realized until just now. Maybe it had to do with a shift in elevation, but he wasn't feeling that hot. There was a definite fever lurking under his skin, and it made the cotton of his shirt cling between his shoulderblades, clammy in this sudden humidity. He hadn't thought it was possible to feel even worse than he had been lately, but it was like his bodystrength took a fucking nosedive in the last five seconds. Despite that, he felt strangely clearheaded. Which was an improvement, but not worth mentioning unless he wanted to confess to how crazy and generally out of it he'd been feeling before now.]

[Gwen shook her head when Flash asked about abilities. No. Nothing, even if he meant an entirely different ability than the one she was currently in possession of, but that hardly seemed to matter when there was no ability whatsoever. She felt different, but she'd been feeling that way since the moment she was unable to alter the fabric of reality, so that wasn't particularly off-putting. She wasn't expecting anything from Harry, because she didn't realize the serum had affected him on a physical level yet, and possibly that was deliberate blindness, but Peter's agreement that his powers were gone cleared up the matter of abilities in this door as a whole.

She wasn't sure how panicked to be about that, so she concentrated on logistics. It also helped her avoid the fact that Harry was absolutely right; this silence was creepy. She pulled out her compass, and she started turning in a circle to determine direction, in order to better locate Mary Jane.] I don't think there's electricity. There aren't any ambient sounds, no televisions in the distance or radios. No cars either. [No people, but she didn't add that aloud.

She'd just finished her turn, when she saw him.

The little boy was behind them, maybe eleven, twelve years old. He was a dozen feet away, looking at them, and with the exception of the blood dotting the front of his button-down school shirt, he looked normal. He wasn't decomposed, there was nothing missing from him. He had am ambling gait, but he looked like a human little boy. No moans, no groans, nothing undead about him except that gait as he moved closer.

He was blond. His hair was still there, and he was blond with hazel eyes, and he looked harmless. Gwen stepped back instead of reaching for any weapon. He was just a little boy, and he was slow. He wasn't a risk.] Let's just move, okay? [That was to Flash, and her expression was very much don't shoot him, please.]

[A nod when it was confirmed their powers weren't working and Flash dropped to a knee to pop one of the gun cases open. For all the lumbering and mouth breathing, once Flash got down to business it was like he turned into a completely different guy. A soldier. He loaded the gun and handed it to Peter.] Same one we practiced with. Talk to me when you need more ammo. [He touched the second case.] I've got more shit here. You need a new gun, you talk to me. [Flash said to Gwen and Harry (who wasn't looking so hot) and then stood up.]

[And there was that kid. Newly zombified. Almost human. Flash frowned. In the military, they'd shoot the kid to make an example out of him. To shock them into getting there wasn't supposed to be mercy for any of these monsters. But, that look Gwen gave him made Flash sigh and he decided it wasn't worth the fucking buck shot.] Let's go, okay? Let's fucking get going.

[He looked up and noticed more bodies shamble their way onto the street. At first there were just a few, but the numbers grew as zombies stumbled out of wide open doors and through holes in fences.] We need to move. [Soon the street was full of nearly a dozen zombies ranging from every age and some barely with enough skin to cover their bones.] I think they're smarter in groups. Synap- syn-thing- Parker help me out with this one. [Flash made a motion to his head as if that would explain it and then started quickly walking away from the oncoming horde. A zombie popped up at him from behind and car and BAM went Flash's shotgun right to the monster's head before he could even think about it.]

[Creepy was definitely the right word to describe it. Peter had seen a lot of zombie movies, and before his life had become crazy busy he'd racked up a lot of gaming hours, but this wasn't something he was watching or playing. There was no safety of a screen. This was real life, he was powerless, and apparently Gwen was too-- mental note, ask about that later.

No electricity, no cars, no people. Zombie apocalypse was what he was thinking; total collapse of civilization, so basically, they were on their own. He took the gun from Flash with a nod, and tried to get a feel for it. He could shoot one, sure, but like he'd told Gwen, Spider-Man didn't use guns.

Looked like he'd have to get over that real fast, though. He really, really didn't want to shoot the kid, and he agreed with Gwen when she suggested that they move. Maybe he was a zombie but he looked like a human being, and this was so much easier in video games. Moving sounded good, really good, but it was like with each step they took more and more zombies appeared. Hoards were bad.] Synapses. [He spoke automatically, without thinking, to fill in what Flash was trying to say. He followed Flash away from the hoard, glancing over his shoulder to make sure Gwen and Harry were doing the same and hadn't, you know, been ambushed or whatever. He'd been shot at enough times that the sound of gunshots didn't bother him, he didn't even flinch.

A zombie rounded around one of the cars, a woman, bloodstained and decomposed and barely human, and for a horrible second Peter thought he might freeze up and get himself eaten. But no, instinct took over, and he raised the gun and squeezed the trigger. That made him flinch, even though she (it?) went down in a spray of blood. Right. Okay. He could do this. They just had to keep moving.]

[Harry was glad that Flash didn't shoot the zombie kid. Maybe the notion of children or people needed to be interchanged for monsters, but they were wearing clothes and some of them had a couple of facial features intact. The clothing of the dead wasn't recognizeable to Harry, not by label, and he suspected in that kind of eternal riche entitlement that it was purchased at shopping malls or something. It wasn't a thought built to make Harry feel better or haughty, it was just an observation... and really, if anything, it made him feel even worse about the prospect of having to shoot one of them. The suburban mystique, complete with mowing one's lawn, and shopping at malls, and returning from the dead.

Harry hadn't thought that he would hesitate(he still told himself that he wouldn't), but he wasn't feeling as cut-throat about the whole thing anymore. He took a sharp breath, reminding himself that he had to be, and motioned for Gwen to walk ahead of him while he held the gun away from his body and pointed away from her. He was really beginning to wish that he'd paid a lot more attention to the kids who'd talked nonstop about first-person shooters when he'd been in school. Although he didn't know if it would have helped. This felt too real to be a game.]

Walk ahead of me. [He motioned for her to do so, while he covered their backs.]

[Her sigh of relief was entirely transparent when Flash agreed not to shoot the boy that still looked alive enough that his parents might be looking for him somewhere. She was thankful on an entirely human level, because while she logically understood that the boy wasn't alive, it wasn't as easy to turn off emotion as she'd thought it would be here.

She didn't hesitate when Flash said to move, instead she just pointed at the direction that would keep the sun at their left, since there wasn't much light remaining to use it as a guide, but the hoard came, and then more came when Flash pulled the trigger.] They respond to sound. [It was meant to be informative, but it was more awed that anything else. How did they even work? Was it electrical responses postmortem? It would explain the jerky movements, but not the cannibalism. There were too many of them at that point, and Peter (Peter?) shot one, and she stopped and stared as this entire panorama became gory, vivid reality.

When Harry suggested she walk in front of him, she could've made some argument that would've made her feminist sisters proud; something about her ability to cover their backs as well as he could. But she didn't. She was scared; it was as simple as that, and she was too much a scientist to ignore the fear reactions of her own body.

She pulled her dad's revolver with fingers that didn't remain as steady as she would've liked, and she walked.

But more of the things came, and they were closing in, and soon there would be no way to walk.] Flash? [It was a question, a where do we go? that came on the heels of something lurching close enough to go for her arm. She screamed, and then she shot, but the angle was off and she caught the zombie in the neck before managing to press the muzzle to its forehead with her eyes closed. Which, she realized in retrospect, with aching kickback to her shoulder and brain matter on her hoodie, wasn't how her dad had taught her to shoot anything. She was shaking.] A roof? Maybe a roof until morning?

[Flash didn't flinch at anything. Not the gunfire, not the spray of blood. Gwen's scream was really the only thing that made him panic and in that moment he realized that bringing her, bringing any of his friends, might have been a big mistake. It was one thing to go on a mission with someone he worked with. It was another thing to take his friends along for a zombie joyride.] Gwen. [He reached to grab the back of her hoodie and pulled her closer before he could remember all those girl-power speeches she gave him in high school.]

[He looked to Peter who shot his first zombie, Harry who was probably regretting being here and Gwen who couldn't logic everything that happened here.] We find a house with a flat roof or an attic. We search the house, kill all the zombies inside, take the supplies we need and then lock ourselves up there and try to get in contact with MJ.

[Peter's ears were still ringing, but he heard Harry tell Gwen to walk ahead of him, and despite his doubts about the other boy's state of mind he was glad. She'd be the first to insist that she could take care of herself, but now wasn't the time to argue. All of them, save for maybe Flash, were in way over their heads and there was no use pretending otherwise.

One. He'd shot one, and there were so many more; he wasn't sure he could do this. But he had to keep a brave face, right? He couldn't chicken out. Just keep walking, just keep walking--

And then Gwen screamed, and he spun around, the gunshot ringing out.] Gwen! [Peter raised his gun but, realistically, he couldn't make the shot from where he was, he knew he couldn't, but a second later it didn't matter when the zombie went down in a spray of blood and brain matter. He breathed a sigh of relief, but it'd been really, really close. Maybe Flash realized it, too, from the way he pulled her close.

All his previous thoughts of not making things weird went out the window. He fell back, listening, and decided Flash's plan was as good as any.] Right. Works for me. [He glanced at Gwen, voice low.] You okay?

[Harry wasn't regretting coming along, although he suspected that Flash and Peter might be making mental notes about his inability to hack it in a zombie apocalypse. In an unfamiliar moment of clarity(which combated inadequacy), Harry realized that if Peter didn't have his powers here, Harry thought that kind of shift in sensory perception might be more disorienting than just feeling ill. He promised to keep an eye on Pete while he kept an eye on Gwen (Flash, Harry was pretty sure, would do just fine here). He had to wonder if Flash wouldn't have been able to cover better ground without them, but nobody had expected abilities to completely go altogether - had they? - and there was nothing that could be done about it now.

Gwen's scream snapped Harry out of his speculation, and he whipped around just as the zombie's neck gushed clotted ooze, and he grimaced when the head exploded a second later. Harry swallowed weakly, combating the taste of rot that grew more and more cloying as the things crept closer. There were too many to shoot them all, he thought. So camping out in a house for the moment did seem like a good idea, but Harry didn't like the idea of waiting until morning to find MJ either. This place was more overrun and fucked up than he'd expected, and waiting until morning would be too late if she was somewhere as surrounded as this street.]

No, we have to find her tonight. [He didn't want to have to stay here until morning. Harry reasoned that efficiency was best, but the idea of getting trapped in a house while waiting for morning also terrified him. He really didn't want to die in the deep South.]

[If Gwen had to argue the point, she would argue that her reaction had nothing to do with gender and everything to do with a life that had, until recently, been fairly sheltered. The alien invasion of New York didn't hold a candle to this, and she'd been sedated for the majority of the incident with the hallucinations. Carnage, maybe, came closest, and that hadn't gone very well. Dying, dying was different.

Peter asked if she was okay, and she nodded as she pressed closer to Flash. She was terrified, but she was okay. There was a moment when she thought everything would be fine. If they just managed to break free of this group, and she was already eying the darkening skyline for a roof that matched Flash's description.

But then Harry was insistent, and she knew that look on his face. He would just go on without them if they argued. She weighed that against the reality that walking around at night was probably the most illogical thing they could do, even as she edged closer to Flash as the group closed in on them more.

She said nothing as she reached into her pack and pulled out flashlights for everyone. They were going to die here, in the dark, and they weren't even going to find Mary Jane. She took a deep breath.] If we're going to stay out here, we need to outrun this. Can we shoot a path? Run? Keep what's left of the sun at your left and meet up if we get separated?

[It wasn't a good idea, but she kept her voice positive.] We can do this.

[And the things came closer, crowded them in with the scent of rot and open mouths. There was no choice but to run.]

We're not going to- [Flash started to argue with Harry, but he knew that they didn't even have time for that. Well fuck, what choice did they have? They could make a run for it. Keep going until MJ gave them a good direction and hope the hotel would give them some luck. The hotel had to like them, right? They had been around the longest. It had to have liked them.]

Fucking, fine. We stay away from the big streets, try to cut through yards because they'll be less populated. But, if one of us gets hurt, we're taking a break. I'll fucking knock someone out if they can't get with the program. [That was directed towards Harry. Flash pointed down a smaller street.] That way. Let's go!
