nashtons - doctor's call.
[Gotham was coming back to life in that resilient way the city always managed to do. It helped that everyone was re-energized by the need to take down Ra's himself. To show that their city was strong enough. So, recovery was still happening, but it was remarkable how quickly the city could come back. Mom and Pop shops began to open again, schools resumed, hospitals opened their doors. The streets might have still been in ruins, but the people bounced right back. Part of that was, of course, thanks to the Batfamily and its comrades, of which the Nashtons were obviously a part of. Secret identities were pretty moot at this point, and everyone knew the faces behind the purple shroud and the black domino mask. Everyone knew it was Eddie and Steph who stopped by to check in on families and children, to replenish supplies, to make sure they were safe. No question about it.
There was appreciation in spades, and when one of the doctors caught wind of their difficulty having children, she graciously and insistently told Stephanie that she was happy to help them. So, that was how they found themselves in Dr. Robert's office a few days ago. Holding hands as the doctor explained the possibilities and the risks and the fact that there were no guarantees. That there might have been a good amount of damage to her body from the pregnancy. But, she seemed optimistic. Stephanie's age, despite the fact that she was the one struggling, was in their favor. Other factors, too. And even if she did come back with some sort of infertility, there were treatments. Shots, IVF, IUI, and even, last resort, a surrogate. So tests were taken, ultrasounds performed, and Dr. Roberts told them that she would be in touch in just a couple of days with the news. One way or another, she said, she was going to help figure it out for them.
For the first time, there was a small flicker of hope in Steph, but she didn't want to hype it up too much. She didn't want to get Eddie excited only to squash his dreams yet again. As she sat in the living room of their Gotham apartment, the farm, with Flounder on the couch with her, she tried her best not to think of when the doctor might call. What kind of news she would have. Ever since the tests had been done, she'd been slightly jittery, and when her phone finally ringed, she jumped. On the screen was Dr. Robert's name.] Baby! BABY, IT'S HER! [She picked up the phone, begging the doctor not to say anything until her husband was in the room, and putting the phone on mute, she stood up on wobbly, slightly panicked feet to shout for him again.]
