[Bruce's smiles are rare, and his laughs are nearly non-existent. Usually the only way to get him to laugh is to surprise him into it. There's a heavy weariness on him, not the kind that's from just this incident, but from decades of it. His body languages shows it, from the slouched shoulders to the eyes that rarely maintain eye contact for long.] You're both younger and prettier than me, so I never had a shot.

[He notes the smile fading for what it is, but it's not exactly a surprise. What he said isn't exactly helpful or reassuring.] The best in New York. Especially here at the Tower. They know what they're talking about. [Bruce rarely puts himself on that list. He's a scientist more than a doctor.] Be sure to tell your doctors any changes, because it's important to stay on top of it. You'd be surprised at how often people keep things from doctors. [Or maybe not surprised at all.]

[The smile becomes a smirk, and he peers over at the Doc again.] Nah, man. Don't sell yourself short. You got your own hotness going on there. [The words come out without embarrassment, like it's no big deal to point out when someone else is attractive. There's still a flirt to it, just a little, even though the room is spinning. But there's only appreciation, not anything else in his expression that would hint at lust or desire.

And then he's sighing, an expression that would be a rolling of his eyes if it didn't currently make everything even worse.] I know how it works, Doc. Tell them so they can fix it. I may not like it, but I know how it works. [And yet, the information about his dreams stays firmly behind his teeth for the moment.]

Ha, right. Thanks. [Clearly Bruce in no way believes that, but he doesn't want to anyway. It's easier not to worry about it. He's not embarrassed either, considering he started out with the pretty comments. He studies Sam thoughtfully afterward and then nods.] I know you know how it works, but I also know how stubborn soldiers are. I've worked with a lot of them over the years. [In both good and bad ways.] I'm staying in the Tower, so I'll come back and check with you. If you need anything just let them know to get me. There's more pudding where that came from.
