I ain't going out in this. You can be fussed all you want.

[Locked to Shane, Graham and Amelia]
Man from the building's coming to board up everyone's windows, and he says they're doing the same to the front door and lobby. Best be here, if you want to hide inside. I got a feeling they ain't opening those doors again once they're closed up tight.

Wouldn't expect you to. You someplace safe? I can send people/supplies if you need anything.

They're boarding up this apartment building nice. It's owned by rich folk, and they aren't risking a thing. I'll be fine as can be. You? You got somewhere safe to be?

Mostly your things. The rest of us don't have much in the way of grocering. Power's still good, but the news is saying that might not hold out real long.

We stay just where we are. If Graham could get here, he'd already be here, honey. I got no doubt in my head over that. If he does get here, some wood ain't going to stop him getting in.

Maybe Shane's with him. Graham's been working out of town days. He probably doesn't even know it's gone bad yet.

The alternative, honey, is going out there, and we ain't dying for no men. We sit here unless supplies run out or something breaks through. Then we fret some.

Some folks get real romantic when things go bad, and they want to go saving people. Course, I been living with you and Shane for a spell now, and I can't tell if you're romantic together or not.

We weren't ever together. We nearly were in the other world, but nothing came of it. And I suppose coming to the real world made me less of the only woman around for him.

Shane's been a good friend to me, and there were never any promises. It hurts, but I'm not mad. He's been kind enough to let me stick around while I get my feet off the ground. Although how that's possible in this town, considering this happens, I don't know.

Sounds like the other place has been a whole lot worse, honey, the other big door. Least no one's drugging us up. It don't matter where Shane's got himself to. Graham'll come on home, and we'll all be fine. Love's not a thing anyway, not in my experience. Folks are fickle, and it's just lusting that don't last.

All the more reason no one seems safe in either of these doors. Maybe going to another one would be a smart idea after this. [...] I believed in love and I was married thinking it would last forever. That turned out to be a giant mistake, although I don't regret it, because it resulted in my son. I don't know what I think anymore about it.

Seems like jumping from one pot to the next, is my way of seeing it. Figure best thing is find some leverage somewhere. Safety lives in pockets, honey, and doors ain't no different than anyplace else in that respect.

Never did believe in love. Believed in family once, but didn't work out near as well as I thought. But your boy's real sweet.

Guess what I'm saying is don't count on men staying. Fickle as summer showers is what my momma says. If it's hurting you, then best you take control of it somehow.

The hotel wasn't kind enough to save me my millions, so there aren't any pockets.

I'm sorry about your family. Mine was never terribly close to start with. I had the whirlwind sense of love at the time, married without a prenup, thought for certain I had it all figured out. As soon as I was married, I learned exactly what he wanted out of me. It was a very expensive mistake. He traded full custody of our son for a yacht.

It's a bruise, that's all. But I don't want him to feel obligated to look out for me, so I'll have to figure out something else.

Mine neither. Got to make new pockets. Or find ways to fill the old ones some. Living like this, it ain't for me. Small and cramped and hearing folks breathe through the walls. It's a real nice building, though. Good for a little boy.

You could go after him, if you were inclined, but it sounds like you're calling it a done thing.

After living in a prison, I think I can make anything work. I thought about teaching art, maybe at a school where I could put him in daycare or to cover him for the younger years at school. I'm not sure, but my priority has to be him. I wouldn't know any other way of getting new pockets. What were you thinking?

To be honest, it always felt like he was reluctant. I never knew where I stood with him, but I thought I was starting to get it. We nearly had sex, but that was right before we had to move the prison, so there was an emergency and we didn't talk about it again. I don't think Shane's one for pursuing. And I'd rather not make a fool of myself by doing it instead.

Teaching won't make you rich, but it's steady. This place is clean and good. You want me to see if we can clear out of it? It's not really my thing, and I figure I can whine at Graham to upgrade some after all this. I wasn't thinking anything yet. I can go work at a hospital some, but I don't know I want to go that route if I don't got to. If our wood don't hold on the doors, though, that's where we'll go. We take the boy, and we go on to Gotham General. They'll need doctoring, and you and Joshua can come on with my stitching fingers.

Honey, don't never chase a reluctant man.

I don't want to put anyone out, I figure at this point just getting out of this situation is most important. Any other details can come later. Working at a hospital will definitely make you some money, why wouldn't you want to go that route?

That's good advice, and I plan on taking it.

I'm not made for working, honey. Maybe acting. My momma's life, but it's better than sweating hard for anyone but myself.

Could go shifting your interest to one of the other zombie men. Not hard to look at, some.

I loved working. Or I should say I loved what I was doing, so it never felt like work to me. How do you think you'll go about getting money if you don't work?

Or maybe no men for now is the better option.

Acting, like my momma. All you needs a real pretty face, and men fawn and put you in front of bright lights. Ugly place like this, I bet pretty goes a real long way.

Depends on what you need, honey. Some women need a man around, and some don't.

Acting, like my momma.

I can't tell if that's bitter or sad talking, but I guess either is fine just now to get through this at least. Time enough to go sorting after. We got candles? They're saying power won't hold real long now we're cut off.

Acting, like your mother, got it.

A bit of both, probably, with some pragmatism and weariness sprinkled in there. We should get water while we can, out of the faucet.

I'm real sorry it didn't work out, honey. I was sure it would, seeing you two together in that prison.

Water. I'll handle that. Candles will be harder to come by, I reckon. But the dark's not so bad for me. Save any you find for you and the boy, so he won't be scared bad.

Best get moving. Noise is getting worse outside. [And she reluctantly leaves the perpetually locked sanctuary of her bedroom.]
