behind the veil

A dark alternate universe Harry Potter game set in 1996.

Only one pair was still battling... Harry saw Sirius duck Bellatrix's jet of red light: he was laughing at her.

"Come on, you can do better than that!" he yelled, his voice echoing around the cavernous room.

The second jet of light hit him squarely on the chest. The laughter had not quite died from his face, but his eyes widened in shock. Harry released Neville, though he was unaware of doing so. He was jumping down the steps again, pulling out his wand, as Dumbledore, too, turned towards the dais. It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall: his body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backwards through the ragged veil hanging from the arch. Harry saw the look of mingled fear and surprise on his godfather's wasted, once-handsome face as he fell through the ancient doorway and disappeared behind the veil, which fluttered for a moment as though in a high wind, then fell back into place. Harry heard Bellatrix Lestrange's triumphant scream, but knew it meant nothing - Sirius had only just fallen through the archway, he would reappear from the other side any second…

And he did.

Sirius found himself in a world he did not recognize. All around him were familiar faces and yet their lives were not how he remembered it. Even his own life had been lived differently.

They came at night, men and women in white coats with needles and drugs, chloroform and ether, invading the sanctity of homes. They stepped through portals and no wards or locks could stop them. They kidnapped individuals and took them to an artificial island for the purpose of observing them.

The Heads put their new subjects in rooms in a hotel, turned on their cameras, and settled down to wait. They were engaged in a social experiment, peppering their artificial island with rumors of a way back home, if only people could learn to work together.

But the people weren't simply left to their own devices. The Heads create hazards on a weekly basis to keep the population on their toes and to observe the effects of various changes to the environment. They want to see the formation of bonds of friendship and love, of animosity and hatred, and then test those bonds.

Is there an escape? Will it be found before it's too late? Can antagonists learn to work together? Come join us and find out ...

In the early 1980s a secret worldwide organization know as the Gardiner initiative began to work on a chemical compound to alter human genetics. Their goal? To allow humans to develop superpower abilities.

In 2008, they discovered a formula that would affect certain humans depending on their genetic structure. Once the Gardiner Initiative cut through the red tape of governments around the world they put this chemical compound into world water supplies.

In January 2010 stories began to surface around the world of people who could perform amazing feats such as fly, turn invisible, even read minds....

the colony: a post-apocalyptic rpg [06 Aug 2010|07:00pm]
In 2009, the world experienced a global outbreak of a new strain of influenza A/virus subtype H1N1, referred to as novel H1N1 and first identified in April. It was commonly known as swine flu in North America and Mexican Flu in Europe. Deaths were reported worldwide, and concern that the virus would progress and become worse escalated as the death toll rose.

In November 2009, the Netherlands developed the first medicinal treatment for victims of the virus. When it appeared to cure the symptoms, mass production of the drug was ordered just in time for distribution for the seasonal flu season. Within weeks of deployment, reports of returned symptoms hit the media.

People fled in mass exodus from the cities in an attempt to escape its reach, either to government-run evacuation sites or places of their own choosing, but by then it was too late. Instead of treating the virus, the drug attacked the body, allowing the virus to adapt and become a new strain of supervirus not even the original vaccine could prevent. It spread worldwide in a matter of days, with no amount of damage control stopping it. Only one in every five hundred survived.

By April 2010, one year after H1N1's first reported case and a mere five months after the medicine was distributed, the world went silent. With the power grid shut down, there was no way to know for certain who was alive. Those naturally immune to the virus who survived suffered famine, further disease, and the violent tendencies of others out for themselves. There was one bright spot in the west, though: Las Vegas. There a group of survivors found each other and started to rebuild their world.

But then the lights go out. At the mercy of territorial gangs and brutal desert weather, they leave and settle in Oregon, but the dangers of Vegas were only the beginning. From lone wanderers, they hear rumors of breeding camps and slave traders. Worst of all are the whispers about the Sevens. People are no longer fighting for survival, they’re fighting for control. Whoever wins out will redefine civilization forever. The group from Las Vegas must join the fray or risk annihilation. The end of the world didn’t kill them, but rebuilding it just might.

The Colony is a post-apocalyptical neo-western that takes place in Grants Pass, Oregon in an alternate timeline where Swine Flu mutates and kills most of the world population. We cover all styles of storylines, but are primarily on the dark end of the spectrum. Please read our FAQ and Rules for more information.

Welcome to Avalonis, where superheroes and villains walk the streets and nothing is quite what it seems.

The city of Avalonis was once dubbed the superpowered capital of the world and even today the city is filled with people who can do the most extraordinary things. Some can move things with their mind, others can read them and then there are some who have no powers at all but insist on fighting for justice nonetheless. As when you have a city filled with heroes, villains will follow and now the city is host to some of the most spectacular and epic show downs the world has ever seen.

Beneath the shiny exterior of the city and the side that the tourists come to see in the hope of catching a glimpse of the city's famous heroes and villains is a layer of corruption. The Irish mob and Italian mafia control parts of the city, pushing prostitution and drugs onto the streets of Avalonis. If there's something you crave then there's always a way to get it, no matter how sordid your tastes.

There's a reason why the city needs heroes. Avalonis Police Department is rife with corruption. The internal struggle within the department is probably why they have yet to pay full attention to the recent disappearances of young superpowered individuals, but how long can these disappearances remain unnoticed and who knows more than they're letting on?

The wizarding world has changed, yes. Finally, there is peace and lives are normal. Hogwarts students no longer have anything worse to fear than rejection after they've finally worked up the courage to ask their crush to the Yule Ball. Life is good in their own little world.

But maybe it's time to branch out a little, try to reconnect with other wizarding communities across the world. At least, the Ministry's Department of Magical Cooperation seems to think it is. And they've convinced Hogwarts' board of governors that it's a good idea, as well.

So after working with the governors of Durmstrang, a new program has been implemented, one that will help unify the wizarding world and bring Hogwarts students closer with their international peers. Starting this school year, Hogwarts and Durmstrang will close the gap and tighten the ties.

Will students be able to break down the walls and forge new friendships and love interests? Or will this only prove just how different they really are?

Present day Aiode Falls, Maine is home to many residents from all over the globe. And Universe. The little college town is growing, and becoming home to more and more people all the time. Some of them have no idea how they came to arrive, and some can never go home. As the University gets darker with new arrivals harboring less than happy intentions, so does the city. It is now home to metahumans, vampires, humans, demons, ghosts, aliens and even celestial beings. All of them with defined morals (or none, for that matter) and each with an allegiance. Those without a chosen allegiance are considered fair game, as both sides subconsciously prepare.

There is a constant battle for good and evil in this town, and only one side can prevail.
