Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

take you in

Everybody needs a little help once in a while. Offering them a ride to a shelter is one thing, but if you really want to help, why not offer to take them in until they can get back on their own two feet?

How to Play:
  1. Post with your character | fandom | and any preferences (needs shelter or can give shelter).
  2. Tag Others.
  3. Be awesome to each other.
  4. Have fun!

You can use a RNG to help pick, or choose your favorite.

1. Kicked Out: Your friend just got kicked out of their living space and you know they've got nowhere else to go. Help them out!
2. Recurring: You pass by this person almost every day on your way out. Maybe you give them some money every day, maybe you give when you can, or maybe you don't give at all. Either way, seeing them so often finally pulled on your heartstrings enough to open your door and welcome them in.
3. Baby, It's Cold Outside: The snow storm of the century is heading your way. Come on, you can't let them freeze to death, even if it's just for a night.
4. GDI A Kid: Usually you'd keep to yourself, but you can see that this person has a child or is pregnant. How can you not help, you're not a monster.
5. Trade Off: Listen, they need a place to sleep, you need someone to do the cleaning and you're a pretty awful cook. Mutually beneficial.
6. Familiar Face: You haven't seen them in a while and they sort of fell off the face of the earth. You heard that it was bad, but you didn't know it was this bad, bring them inside!
7. Wildcard: If you don't like any of the prompts, make your own!

Kate wasn't sure where she was or how she got there. The last thing she remembered was being on vacation in Canada with her parents and brother. Then she was standing next to some weird tree stump in woods that didn't smell familiar. She knew that she was supposed to stay put if she ever got lost and let someone from the Pack find her, but at the age of five, she was far too curious for her own good and she knew that she could totally figure out where she was and get back to her family.

Even though she was too young for her first Change, she was already exhibiting a lot of secondary characteristics of a werewolf, including enhanced durability, so she had no idea how far she managed to travel away from where she originally woke up. Unfortunately, the woods were vast and she only managed to get herself more lost. This was bad. She was going to be in so much trouble.

The wind brought the scent of another werewolf. It wasn't a scent she recognized, which meant it wasn't Pack, but it also smelled... different. Not bad, like the Mutts, but different. She remembered her parents talking about other kinds of shifters in Alaska. Maybe this was one of them? Either way, she figured that another shifter might be able to help her, so she followed her nose in the direction of the scent until she found a man she didn't know.

Caution had her hanging back, peering at him from behind a tree, trying to determine if he was the kind of man who would want to hurt her or not.

He couldn't ever seem to get away from this town. Every time Derek wanted out and actually went, something always seemed to draw him back. Beacon Hills the supernatural beacon...yeah. No shit...

Derek tore through the woods, the wind in his fur as he stretched the wolf's legs. He made his way back to the place where the old house used to be, all that was left being an empty plot and a few pieces of yellow caution tape that hadn't been cleaned up after they'd bulldozed and cleared the property of the debris. There was a tree out back where he and his sisters used to play, climbing it and they'd talked about building a tree house once, but it hadn't ever panned out. Now, Derek used it to hang his clothes from a low-hanging branch whenever he went for a run as the wolf, because transitioning back out into nudity didn't bother him any, but trying to get back to the loft without being seen was more trouble than it was worth. The SUV he'd finally broken down and traded Laura's old Camaro in for was parked not too far from it and he transitioned back out of wolf form as he moved behind the tree to dress again.

He was zipping up his jeans when he caught an unfamiliar scent carried to him on the wind and Derek's head snapped to the side reflexively as he scented at the air to try to nail down the species. It didn't smell like a werewolf, at least not one from around here. But it didn't smell like anything else either and wolf was as close as he could come up with.

Fangs descending but hidden behind his lips, puffed out with the effort of concealing them for now, Derek came out from behind the tree and looked around. He couldn't see anyone. "Come out, come out, wherever you are," he said in a low, booming voice. "I'll find you eventually either way," he pointed out, starting forward and hoping that he was actually following the scent and not the path it floated on the breeze.

Duh, of course he could smell her if she could smell him. That was stupid, Kate. His voice sounded scary, but kind of in the same way her Dad's usually did that wasn't really scary, so she poked her head out from behind the tree again, letting him spot her this time.

If he tried to hurt her, she would kick him hard. Or bite him. Either way, she was smart and fast and could get away if she needed to. "I got lost," she said. "Can you help me find my parents?"

...okay, that...was not the source he expected to find. The little blonde couldn't have been older than six and the surprise registered on Derek's face before he could formulate a response. His jaw shifted slightly and he cleared his throat as his fangs ascended out of sight again.

"Yeah, you're pretty well lost, kiddo...how'd you get all the way out here? Are you okay...?"

"I dunno how I got here," Kate said. "There was a big, weird tree stump. And then I walked and walked and walked and didn't find anyone. 'Cept you."

Of course she was fine. Kate Danvers might be young, but she could take care of herself. She was awfully hungry though. All that walking worked up quite an appetite and she wasn't fast enough to catch her own rabbits yet. Plus she lacked claws.

Derek's brow creased. The Nemeton...? What the hell was it doing now? She was just a kid, for Christ's sake.

"Yeah, well, nobody's lived out here in a really long time, that's why. That's a long walk, kid..." he stalled.

What the hell was he supposed to do with her? He couldn't just leave her out here, but the actual last thing he needed on his list of wrongdoings he hadn't actually committed was kidnapping. He frowned again, eyes shifting to his vehicle. "Come on, I can take you to the police station, if you want. I know the sheriff. He can help you better than I can."

Kate shook her head back and forth, her messy blonde hair whipping across her face. "I'm not allowed to talk to policemen," she said. Or any authority figure. They were too dangerous and might ask questions that would reveal the existence of werewolves. Ever since finding out the truth about her family, the secret had been drilled into Kate and Logan's heads.

"Do you have a phone? I can call my mom." She was also required to memorize her parents' cell phone numbers and the number of the Pack house in case of an emergency.

Derek just blinked at her. Not allowed to talk to policemen? He would've thought the end of that sentence would've been strangers. "Okay..." he said slowly, lifting his eyebrows. "He knows about us, you know? Wolves. I wouldn't trust him if he didn't..." he offered.

"Not on me," Derek sighed. "I was on a run. I have one, but it's halfway across town in my loft."

"It's against Pack Law to tell humans about us," Kate said, her little eyes getting very wide. "That's why my daddy bit my mom when he fell in love with her."

Of course, mentioning that her mom was a bitten werewolf was probably a mistake. Elena Michaels was the only female werewolf, other than Kate, and everyone knew she was going to be the next Alpha. Then again, if this guy could tell she was a werewolf, he probably already knew who she was and who her parents were. The Danvers family was well known in the Supernatural world.

Except. "You smell funny."

With that, Derek's eyes widened. "...your daddy's an Alpha?" he asked. That was a pretty risky move, biting an adult to turn them. Adults had a lower ratio for successful turns than teenagers or children, he'd learned.

"And besides, I'm in a different pack, and my pack has humans in it; we help them. Protect them," he said, and it wasn't entirely true, because he wasn't ever really a part of McCall's pack, but it was the point he was trying to make, in any case.

Derek huffed a laugh. "Yeah, well you smell funny too, kid, but that doesn't mean it's a nice thing to say, you know."

Kate stuck her tongue out. "Daddy's not an Alpha. Grandpa Jeremy is. And Mom is going to be next." There was a big word that everyone used to describe it, but she couldn't remember how to say it. "And we're the only Pack. Mutts don't have Packs."

But he didn't smell like a Mutt. So that didn't make sense. "How come you don't smell like my parents? Are you really a werewolf?"

And now Derek just looked confused. "Well, if Daddy's not an Alpha, then how'd he turn your mommy?" he asked cautiously. Derek huffed incredulously when she said they were the only pack. "Oh, no you're not, kiddo. That's for sure. I know at least two packs in this town alone. But...neither of them have an older man as an Alpha. One's a woman and the other's a teenage boy. And I'm not a Mutt, whatever that is. I'm born, thank you very much. You've got a little mouth on you, huh?"

Derek shifted his face and opened his mouth with his fangs descended. "What do you think?" he asked. "And I don't know, maybe different packs smell different." That didn't really make sense to him at all because the wolf should still smell the same, but she didn't; she had that much right.

None of this made any sense to Kate. Sure, she was just a little kid, but she was a smart kid and she knew how things worked in her world. Her parents made sure of that. It was the only way to keep her and Logan safe.

"My mom is the only female werewolf. 'Sides me." The fact that she hadn't Changed yet and might not be able to was a minor detail.

She scrunched her nose up when he made a wolf face. It kind of looked like Aaron's vampire face,, but it definitely didn't look like her parents or Jeremy or Uncle Nick when they were wolves. "My family turns into real wolves."

"Not a very well-rounded pack then, huh?" he asked. In his experience, female Alphas and female-dominated packs tended to do better in survival than patriarchal packs. If not for his own stupidity, his own pack would still be alive and he gave a lot of credit for that to his mother and sister.

Derek shifted back out of wolf face again and lifted his eyebrows. "All of 'em, huh? I can do that, too, but you wouldn't want to see me when I come back out of it. Nobody wants to see that," he joked.

Once again, Derek nodded in the direction of his car. "Come on, let me just take you to sheriff Stilinski. Maybe he'll know how I can help you find your parents. I'm not good at that stuff, I don't know how to help."

Kate didn't understand what he meant about the Pack not being well rounded, so she didn't bother answering the question. "I'm gonna be a wolf some day too," she said. Even though they didn't know that for sure, she was determined.

Her tummy growled and she made a face. "Can we get cheeseburgers first?"

Nodding, Derek smiled. "Yeah, I bet. You haven't turned yet?" he wondered. She was getting a little old, he thought. In his experience, werewolves tended to start to feel the pull of the moon when they were still toddlers.

"Geez," he laughed. "Now I gotta buy cheeseburgers? I'm really getting the raw end of this deal, kid." He took a deep breath and let it out in a huffed sigh. "All right, come on, there's a McDonald's on the way."

"I'm too little," she said. "Mommy says most wolves have their first Change when they're teenagers. But since me and Logan are special, we might be younger."

Or they might not ever turn, despite having the secondary characteristics already. Anything was possible and no one knew what to expect with the twins since they were born of two bitten wolves. Especially Kate, since she was the first born female.

She realized that she probably shouldn't be getting in a stranger's car, but so far he hadn't tried to hurt her and she was hungry and needed help finding her parents, so... "My name's Kate. What's yours?"

"Too little?" Derek asked, confused, as he led the way to the SUV and opened the front passenger door for the little girl. "My first turn, I was three. My sisters were two and four," he pointed out. "I'd say you're too big not to have...you guys are late bloomers, huh?"

He waited for her to get into the car and before he shut the door he gave her an uncomfortable little smile. Kate. Her name was Kate, because of course it was. "I'm Derek," he told her and then closed the door carefully before moving around the hood of the car to get to his own door, climbing into the driver's seat. "Buckle up."

He had sisters who were werewolves? This was so, so weird. Kate kind of wished that Logan was here because he was even smarter than she was and maybe he could figure out what was going on.

Kate pulled the seat belt across her chest and fumbled with the buckle for a moment before getting it to click into place. Her parents usually made her ride in the back seat, but she wasn't about to tell Derek that. It was fun riding up front.

"Thank you for helping me, Derek," she said, proud that she remembered her manners.

Derek buckled his own seat belt and took his keys out of the center console, pushing them into the ignition and turning them to start the engine. He looked over at the little blonde girl who looked so horrifyingly out of place in Derek's vehicle, and gave her a little smile.

"You're welcome, Kate," he said.

He pulled back onto the dirt road and eventually out of the woods entirely, turning onto the main stretch of back road that ran from the end of Beacon Hills to town. It only took him fifteen minutes or so to reach the McDonalds and he stopped in front of the order box in the driver thru, telling the girl on the other end that he needed a minute, and then he looked over at Kate. "All right, what do...you like?" he asked, having to consciously stop himself from replacing "you" with "kids" and sounding like some kind of creep to the girl in the McDonald's waiting for his order to come through her headset. "You want, like, a Happy Meal or something?"

"I want a Big Mac. And french fries. And chicken nuggets."

Kate may not have had her first Change yet, but she definitely had the werewolf appetite already. Plus she walked a long, long time in the woods and that made her extra hungry.

So much for manners. She didn't even think about saying please or thank you.

"Jesus..." he replied, clearing his throat and turning to face the speaker to order. "All right... Can I get a Big Mac, two large orders of fries, a nine piece chicken nugget, and two diet Cokes?"

Derek looked back at Kate. "You're good with diet Coke, right? What else? What kind of sauce?" he asked just as the girl asked the very same from the speaker.

Kate's nose wrinkled. "Diet is gross. I want milk. And barbecue sauce."

Those were things that totally went together as far as a five year old was concerned. "Please." she added, belatedly realizing that she should be trying that whole polite thing since Derek was helping her. Her parents and Logan were probably going crazy trying to figure out where she was.

With a dramatic sigh, Derek turned back to the speaker. "Sorry, Big Mac, two large fries, a nine piece nugget with barbecue sauce, one diet Coke and one milk," he corrected the order.

Once he got the total, Derek drove forward to the pickup window. "Milk with a Big Mac and barbecue sauce? Gross," he teased.

"Milk makes your bones strong," Kate said. "And I gotta have strong bones if I'm gonna be a good werewolf."

"Your bones are gonna be strong anyway, because you're a werewolf, booger snot," he countered with a grin before he pulled up to the window, paying the girl.

His attention turned back to the little girl and he lifted his eyebrows. "Well, what'd you do that for?"

"Cause I saw my mom and dad do it," Kate said.

What she hadn't known at the time was that her parents were werewolves and had the ability to safely jump out of a second story window without breaking themselves. She also didn't realize they were doing that to go for runs without the kids knowing they were gone.

"Well, did you learn your lesson?" he asked before turning back to the girl at the window and thanking her, reaching out to take the drinks first. Those went into his cup holders, and then his attention moved back to the girl to take the bag, handing it to Kate. "Don't eat my fries, Munchkin," he said before thanking the girl at the window again and then rolling up the window as he drove forward again.

Derek just parked in the McDonalds parking lot so that she wouldn't have to try to eat at the sheriff's station. "There you go, kid, eat up."

Kate rolled her eyes at his question. Even at her young age, she had a pretty good grasp on sarcasm. God help her parents when she hit the teenage years. Food was a good distraction though, so she dug out her burger and unwrapped it, taking a big bite, not noticing that sauce was dripping out the other side and on to the floor of Derek's car.

Derek took the second order of French fries out of the bag and popped a few into his mouth. Kate seemed to be content to ignore him in favor of her food and it wasn't lost on him that she was making a mess. Now I know what Mom meant when she said stuff like "this is why we can't have nice things, Derek," he thought with a pang of both sadness and amusement.

"It is in my mouth!" she argued, though the words came out all muffled since her mouth was full of burger when she spoke. The manners thing was definitely hit or miss still.

Kate still wasn't sure that it was a good idea to let Derek take her to the police, but she was going to finish eating before she suggested that he just take her to his phone to call her parents.

Derek nodded and gave her a sympathetic look. He wasn't sure if her appetite worked the same way his did, but if it did, she had to be starving by now, being early afternoon, especially if she was as early a riser as Derek was.

"A long time."

She was only five and didn't wear a watch or carry a phone to let her know what time it was. It didn't take her long to finish her Big Mac and she took a long drink of her milk before she dove into the fries and nuggets.

A long time. So, in other words, no not really. Derek sighed softly through his nostrils.

"Yeah, all right, it's out of the way, but we can go back to my loft and you can use my phone," Derek agreed. The last thing he wanted was to be tangled up in some kind of accidental drama if her parents decided, regardless of what either he or she said, that he'd kidnapped her. Which was, really, why he'd rather drop her off with Stilinski and step away from it.

Kate beamed at him before stuffing a handful of french fries in her mouth. As soon as she called her mom, everything would be better. Her parents would come get her and she would be able to go home with her family.

At least Derek was a good babysitter in the mean time.
