The train rumbled out of the station with surprisingly little fuss. A slight bit of rocking, a touch of greased wheel screeching against metal, and some smoke obscuring the night view through the windows as the quaint little station became a thing of the past. The train itself, like its passengers, was a thing of more glittering times. It was eclectic, a mix of decor and whimsy from a collection of disparate, if more decadent, years. The passengers, too, couldn't be pinpointed as coming from a specific era or timeline, but they were all bearers of tickets on this train and for this journey. The schedule for the evening was left on embossed cardstock and upon every bed, be it a room for four, or a private car: Cocktails in the piano car (for first class passengers), dinner in the various dining cars, entertainment in the sitting cars, and then quiet for the duration of the evening. When clocks aboard struck 7:00 pm, and cocktails were to be served in the piano car for those passengers traveling first class, while those traveling second and third were being seated for a less extravagant meal in the lesser dining cars. As the train rocked along the tracks in a deceptive soothing lull, a scream interrupted conversations and merriment. Said scream was followed by the telltale screech of the train coming to a halt with sufficient rapidity to jostle passengers forward, should they be standing, or out of their beds, should they be reclining there. The attendants came around and announced that a woman was missing. According to spectators, the woman, a matronly figure, was seated in a sitting car, and she'd just vanished without a trace. Attendants rolled their eyes as they readily repeated the tale, and, as a result of these claims, the train had been stopped, and all travelers would be required to provide tickets and identification when it was requested of them. During the laborious process, three more passengers were reported missing. Vanished, to be more precise, and the attendants were no longer rolling their eyes. Smiles remained in place for the benefit of travelers, but multiple disappearances could hardly be reasoned away as a bit of traveler's madness. The only consistency in the reports involved strange buzzing in the air, an odd feeling of disquiet, right before another disappearance. Attendants were, on the sly, recommending that passengers quickly relocate if they sensed anything strange or heard any buzzing around their persons. In the meantime, cocktails, entertainment, and dinner would resume, as planned, even as the train remained stationary, in light of events. Thus, the night continued. |
