Debbie helps him pack his stuff: the pink-glitter shirts, the porn videos – but leaves his "toy box" alone. He can handle that one.
She notices that he tries his best to stay cheery as they walk down the stairs. He smiles that T.V.-star smile and does his curt little wave. Protecting her as if she had no practice in saying goodbye to surrogate sons.
"You know you can always come back, Em."
Emmett smiles. "I know. But Drewsie's waiting for me."
Debbie watches out the window. Emmett approaches the Hummer and smiles as the golden-boy-who-is-now-a-man opens the door for him. |

Lindsay leaned back against the dresser in Brian's dorm room and watched him fold his cheap shirts with meticulous care, already preparing for the Gucci, the Prada he'd later own.
She watched him bent over at the waist, a stone sculpture, already practicing the don't-give-a-shit stance she'd later see him striking on the sweaty, bustling dance floor at Babylon.
She watched him – young, new, untouchable - zip up his suitcase and straighten up. She closed her eyes as he pressed one soft kiss against her cheek, and he walked out the door, already looking like he needed nobody but himself. |
