Ben had frantically called Michael repeatedly since he and Hunter left: straight to voicemail every time. He headed to Liberty Avenue and found Deb and Emmett in the diner.
“Over here Ben, sweetie! ” she called. “Where’s Michael?”
“I hoped you could tell me.”
As Ben explained, Deb’s mouth opened in shock.
“We have to find them!” she said.
“Find who?” Justin asked; Brian was pushing him toward the men’s room.
“Hunter and Michael! They’ve disappeared,” said Ben.
“Relax, Professor. Zephyr and the Boy Wonder left in my car about an hour ago,” said Brian.
Ben and Debbie both looked relieved. |

I stood in the hallway watching as Hunter and Michael disappeared from sight then slowly walked back into our apartment.
Where would they go, they had taken nothing, not even a change of clothes. Did Michael have enough money, had he taken his cell. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw it missing from the table.
I knew this was not the solution but I was so proud of Michael. He was risking everything because of a kid who he once said he didn’t want in our lives. I have never loved him more than at this moment. |

“I’ll walk you there,” said Em.

Emmett tucked his arm around Deb and started walking.

The city quickly faded. The landscape turned to fields beyond the freeway.
Hunter hadn’t said anything since they left, dazed and slightly confused about what was happening. He turned to Michael, who looked out of place driving Brian’s Corvette.
“Where are we going?”
“No idea. I should call Ben. He’s probably frantic.”
Hunter listened as Michael told Ben what had happened, assured him that they were fine and that they’d call him as soon as they found a place to stay. When he hung up, he turned to Hunter.
“We'll be fine.”
Hunter had no choice but to believe him. |

Liberty Avenue was teeming with celebrating people, many spilling over into side streets. They laughed and hugged and danced; the thrill of victory in the air. Brian and Justin walked among them, arms wrapped around each other, all the frustrations of the last few months forgotten. They stopped in at the diner and Justin blew him in the bathroom for old time’s sake; then Brian watched while Justin inhaled enough food to feed an army. They eventually found their way back to the steps at Woody’s, watching the revelry for hours until Justin fell asleep, his head on Brian’s shoulder. |
