1. As much as Emmett loved to cook, he hated the heat. That sweaty feeling only reminded him of his past in the humid south. When he first realized that he would have to move away, move to someplace more accepting, he knew he would find himself in a colder clime. For a brief moment, he considered moving to New Orleans, but a friend informed him that it was muggier there, and the rain clouds would cling to that city as if searching for a second Noah. With his next paycheck, Emmett purchased one parka and a bus ticket heading north.
2. On his first night in Pittsburgh, Emmett was cold, really cold. ‘My god, how do Yankees do this every year’ cold. The only thing to do in this kind of weather is cook. He opened his gas oven and lit the little pilot light preparing to bake his quiche Lorraine. Emmett sat, wrapped in his parka, by the oven and anticipated the success of his meal. Through the oven window, Emmett could see the small flame that never wavered as it slowly cooked his supper, the air of his tiny apartment filling with warmth and that comforting scent of home.
3. Being cold was easier than being lonely. Emmett dearly missed his family. Some family members he gladly left behind. But there were a few who had awkwardly, kindly, and lovingly accepted him, and he missed them. He missed the touching and the hugging and the kissing. Southerners, he knew, were affectionate creatures, and he was a lonesome boy in a new place with no one to hold. His brief encounters with this guy or that soothed this ache temporarily, but it was not until he met Debbie, and her warm embrace, that he felt as if his journey was complete.
