Show and Tell: The Music Edition
Our busy-busy Bunny hasn’t had much time to play lately, and she’s suggested that she could use a little help with keeping the QAF love alive and thriving. To that end, [info]etextraordinary, [info]frantic_quest and I will start posting Show and Tells on Fridays (yes, it really does take three regular fangirls to do a fraction of the work of one Bunny. ;))

♥ ♥ ♥

So on with the showing and telling ...
The music in QAF is one of the greatest things about this show. How often have we watched a scene, not paying much attention to the music in the background at first, only later to realize just how perfectly the lyrics fit the moment? The first time I really noticed was the dozenth or so time I watched the end of 204 and actually paid attention to the lyrics of "Chiquitita" – and ended up in tears.

Since then I've realized there are many, many examples where the music adds so much to the story – and I want to discover them all!

Come play Show and Tell and share some of your favorites!

When they play "You Are My Sunshine" at the end of 507.

Until then, we don't really know as viewers exactly where Brian's head is at. Yes, we all know he loves Justin, but he let him walk out the door not, like in S2, because the two of them were so fucked up and lost, but apparently calmly and with some kind of understanding of the impasse the two of them had reached. They loved each other but wanted different things. We could see it caused them both pain, we could see Brian's face and that he was suffering, but he was still clearly choosing this.

It wasn't until that song started to play that we were truly able to understand that Brian was, in fact, still trapped in something he was NOT choosing and did NOT control -- as he later said to Ted at Kinnetik, life with a frigid bitch and an angry alcoholic had made him unable or unwilling to commit to someone (ie, SCARED and PARALYZED) and he'd thus lost the two people he cared most about in the world -- and that he not only still loved Justin, but he loved him in that primal way that we always imagined/hoped/believed he did... but weren't quite sure sometimes.

The first time I saw this episode I knew what was coming, and while I found it upsetting, I was mostly okay (I'd been spoiled for all of S5 before I saw it). But when that song started to play, I burst into tears. It gutted me.

This scene and song bring up a strange mix of feelings for me - profound sadness at Brian and Justin's loneliness for each other - and at Brian's relative isolation from everyone - and also hope for Brian and Justin's future together; the love is so obvious that we just know they must come together again.

Yet I'd never gone beyond that to consider what we're actually shown about Brian's thinking and feelings. And now that you point it out - yes!! I have to go back and watch 507 again. I've been thinking about it all day, so it must be time.

Through QaF I discovered quite a few interesting songs. One of my all-time favorites is "Weapon" by the Matthew Good Band. It plays near the end of episode 309 when Justin and Brian are in Bed together.
Apart from it being a gorgeous song, the lyrics killed me when I first saw that scene.
Here by my side an angel
Here by my side the devil
Never turn your back on me
Never turn your back on me again.

Yes!! This is one of the first ones I fell in love with - it just seems to fit the scene, and Brian and Justin, so perfectly. Reading [info]highd's comment below, I started to understand a little better just why that is.

And now when I listen to the song on its own (on my iPod) it's so much more than just "listening to a song" - it's seems to carry with it the whole complex and beautiful story. This seems to be the way with so many songs from the series.

There are are a ton of songs that really brought a scene to life. One of my favorite is 410 when Brian goes to find Justin at Babylon because he can get hard again. Sancturary (Harry Lemon Remix) By Origene was the most fitting song for that scene because Babylon is Brian's sanctuary. His safe place to be who he is without fear, with out judgement.

Parce Mihi Domine, the solemn prayer like ending credits song for 122 acted as a balm to sooth the viewer after watching the bashing. Never has a song haunted me and gave me hope that things might be better, that even though there is that ugliness in the world, there is beautiful music out there that can give you hope.

Weapon by Matthew Good is one of my favorite songs and a song that really explains Brian feelings about Justin. The constant struggle for Brian to understand and accept that he needs Justin in his life. That he has to trust in someone that has so much power to hurt him, but also heal those hurts. It's a powerful song one that I can really relate to in 309 and in my personal life. Giving one person that much power over you does make them a weapon.

These are all such great moments and songs!

I've always loved (and yet wept to the sound of) the choral piece at the end of 122 - but I didn't know what it was called until now. I just went to read a translation. So beautiful, and so apt. Thanks.

I love how "Wonderful Life" by Black, during the Liberty Ride in S4 perfectly completes the cancer arc for Brian. *sigh*

Look at me standing
here on my own again
up straight in the sunshine

No need to run and hide
it's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
it's a wonderful, wonderful life

Sends me to my S4 happy place every time!!

Oooh, great question!
I love Lover's Spit by Broken Social Scene, the song that plays at the end of 308 when Brian and Justin get back together. Most of the interpretations of the lyrics that I've found seem to be saying it's all about casual sex; to me, it's not. I think it's about being sick of casual sex and being ready for something real, which is exactly how I feel about Brian and Justin's relationship at this point. Justin isn't expecting, nor does he want, romantic picnics on the floor and making love under the stars; he wants something real, he wants Brian. Brian doesn't want to psuh Justin away and pretend he doesn't care for him; he now knows how much he misses Justin when he's away and is just one step closer to admitting his feelings for Justin.

You know it's time
That we grow old and do some shit
I like it all that way

I'm terrible at knowing what song is what, but I'll try. The songs I remember are ones I can hear later and still feel the emotions of the scene they are from. I few of my favorites, Weapon and Lover's Spit have already been mentioned.

I can't talk about music and QAF without mentioning Save the Last Dance for Me. Such an incredible moment between Brian and Justin driven by the music. Any time I hear that song I stop what I am doing and remember how they looked dancing together. I've actually stopped talking midsentence.

It's no secret that I adore the final scene of 202. It's an incredible moment of healing and reaching out by Brian and Justin. Svefri-g-englar by Sigur Ros captures all of that perfectly. There really are no words to describe what is happening between them so a song that is about sound and emotion is the only choice.

I can't wait to see other people's answer so I can remember all the wonderful songs I can't think of.

I know I posted but I have a few more. in 103 when Justin jumps into that Twink Pile (TM) HA and stars dancing to Let's Hear For The Boy was an inspired scene. I love how that song cheers on the audacity of Justin stealing Brian's tricks. It's just great.

in 119 when Brian's father dies and they use Let Forever Be and The Shining again two of my favorite song, those songs set up the bowling scene and the last good riddance to Jack perfectly.

Filthy Mind used in 110 was so great. I don't think another song could have been used as that scene unfolded. The pure heat of the moment and watching Justin really come into his own power, and seeing Brian just give in to his need for Justin. I also loved that in that scene Brian looks like he is having the most fun in that bed.

Carol Pope's remake of her famous song added a wonderful in your face to Justin's dance at The King Of Babylon contest. High School Confidential wasn't just a hot song it was like a replay of the whole Brian Justin relationship.

One last one.

Life just kind of dances through ya from your smile down to your feet
Amazing he's a whole new form of life
Blue eyes blazing and he's going to be my wife

When My Boy Walks Down The Street is one hell of an omen like song. It's such a great unusual love song and I believe one that Brian would approve of.

Brian at the end of 115 when his dad comes to the loft. This is probably one of my top 5 QAF songs. I never tire of hearing it.

How Soon Is Now ~ The Smiths

I am the sun
And the air
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the sun and air
Oh, of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry
And you want to die

A song I couldn't listen to for quite a while because it just devastated me, was "Without you, I'm nothing" by Placebo.
Justin in the shower after he was with Ethan. And when Brian joins him, you can see that moment when Justin tries to gather the courage to tell Brian everything, but he doesn't. The slightly dissonant, metallic sound of the song is perfect for this scene. It's haunting.

last week when we had the gala, i marathoned twice 513, and the song at the end when brian and justin are making love, and the song "ambitions" by the doves, is in the background its just so hauntingly beautiful.. i have added it to my ipod, and everytime i hear it now, i choke up or cry.

So ambition cut you down
Aint a love as perfect
Everybody knows it
Something drove you down

Something as good
Something new
Somebody good

There's not a love that's perfect
But I, I live in hope

Somebody good
Somebody new
Something as good
Something that's mine

Ain't a love that's perfect
Everybody knows it
Ambition cuts us down..

when i listen to this song, i see brian with that smile on
his face, looking at justin, very much in love..

One song that takes me right into the scene is "White Rabbit" by Collide. I can't hear it without being right in 402 with Emmett in the field, where he is tripping on 'shrooms.

I love this scene partially because of the awesome filming effects they used to make us be able to see what Emmett was feeling but also because it is where Emmett finally starts to rekindle his flame and recover from how Ted crushed him.

I love so much of the music... Sadly I don't know all the episodes or song names, but I'll try.

"Welcome to my head" by Thunderpuss when Justin is drawing after Cody stirred his post-bashing trauma up again. That scene was so incredibly powerful and the song is perfect.

That chorale song that is played somewhere in 509 when Brian hallucinates that Michael comes to Babylon. It was like a serenade to farewell Babylon as it is, because it's bombed in the next episode. It was so haunting, I got the shivers.

Also, 402 when Emmett is back at Babylon, dancing to "Mundian To Bach Ke" by Punjabi MC. I was so happy he was back ♥

Then, who could forget "Straight to number one"? Whenever I hear it, I think of the reverence and adoration on young Justin's face. Sigh.

When Justin goes back to the loft in 301 to get his things. The song is just so beautiful and makes me so sad, coupled with the shower scene...

The way they blended Babylon's clubbing music with Ethan's violin until it's only the violin as Michael tells Brian that Justin's seeing someone. It breaks my heart, but I could watch that scene over and over and over. Hauntingly beautiful.

And the beginning of 312! It's one of my absolute favourite club scenes because the music is great and the way it's shot is just amazing. I adore it like no one's business.

And don't forget "Cha Cha"! How it starts out with glimpses and then comes the deep, dirty beat and BAM! You've got Justin and Brian dancing in slow motion.

And the song at the end of 314! So beautiful.

Okay, I'd better stop now, my family needs the computer, haha. I could go on for ages!

The end of five O seven when Brian and Justin are walking away in opposite directions, after they bump into each other, just after the Prop 14 meeting that Justin attended, the song that plays says, "The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreamed I held you." Just noticed that tonight!!!

"You look so fine" by Garbage that are playing after the King of Babylon contest when Brian follows Justin and the trick J stole from B to the backroom. Brian hides behind a wall or a stair and watch them fuck. The look on Brians face is killing me.

You look so fine
I want to break your heart
And give you mine
You're taking me over

It's so insane
You've got me tethered and chained
I hear your name
And I'm falling over

And another favourite. Teenage sensation by Gus Gus. Episode 215, Brian in bed waiting for Justin who is with Michael drawing Rage. Also love that the artists name is Gus Gus, it´s those little things that makes me love this show!

I feel my heart slamming
Against my ribs
The smell of your body
And the touch of your lips
You are beyond all imagination

I can touch
My teenage sensation
Your skin must be from another world
My limbs are numbed with your
Pleasuredome
For the first time
A revelation
Beyond all imagination

Finally Sandstorm by Darude. The energy of that song matches the sparkles between B/J when they first meet outside Babylon. And that is also the moment when I fell in love with the boys :)

So the problem I have with this post is I can't actually think of any songs where the lyrics DON'T fit the moment. Anyone?

One of my favorites besides the ones mentioned here is "Don't Tell Me" by Madonna in Ep. 108, when Justin sneaks into Brian's bed after the fight with his dad.

I loved "You think You're a Man" in the pilot. Applies to both characters, heh. (Though the whole song isn't literal, with the part about walking out.) But I like the idea of Brian thinking he's a man but he isn't yet.
