It was rather exhilarating waking up in a new world once again, though he could quite understand why many other citizens felt confused, he just wanted to explore! From the moment he'd spoken to Holly he'd wanted to get out, see the world, find a companion to enjoy the fun with and see what trouble they could get into. Oh, obviously, it wasn't as easy as that! Holly hadn't allowed The Doctor out until she'd performed a myriad psychiatric evaluations on him, none of which were particularly reassuring if you were human. Which he wasn't, and once he'd convinced her of that he was free to go, sort of.

At least he had Clara still, he'd logged onto the network the second he'd been let out and reached out in the hope that someone would answer his call. Good old Clara! The Doctor had fairly bounced as he jogged to their new home and burst through the door, "come on Oswald, what are you doing cooped up in here, we've got a whole new world to explore!" he called out, rocking back on his heels as he looked hopefully up the stairs.

It wasn't long before she appeared and The Doctor met her half-way and gave her a warm hug, "glad you decided to tag along," he teased, leading her down and out into the Portland air. "So, no TARDIS, but plenty to do, I suspect." The Doctor nudged her and grinned, "bet there's plenty of trouble to get into here, and you should have seen the size of the book shop in town! Packed to the rafters. It'd give the TARDIS library a run for it's money, I'm sure!" He stopped in his tracks and looked at her with warmth, "exciting, isn't it? Not sure I like that Holly doctor, though. Far too nosey." He gave her chin an affectionate chuck and smiled, "so glad I get to share this with you!"

Well, Clara hadn’t thought about that. But, like him, she had no real idea when it came to the whereabouts of the TARDIS. It was all just pure guessing and hoping. “You shouldn’t think like that,” she said as she stopped and faced The Doctor. “Maybe she’ll show up at a later date. We don’t know how this place works.”

“But those millions of people aren’t, well, you.” She wasn’t saying there was anything wrong with him, but he did do things a bit outside of the box, which could get him into trouble at a normal job. “Well, sure, but I wouldn’t want you getting the boot on your first or second day of teaching. You would have to follow the rules.” And she just couldn’t see him doing that. “I don’t know,” she said with a slight shrug of her shoulders, “something that won’t get you into too much trouble.”

She had seen some of the looks they were getting, but she didn’t care. “Maybe they haven’t,” she joked. Once she was back on the ground, she did a quick check to make sure she wasn’t flashing anyone her naughty bits and then she started to walk. “They still don’t want you climbing around the shelves like a monkey.” She looked at him and shook his head. “Can’t even go into a book store alone without getting into trouble. We’re going to have a tougher time getting you a job.”

The Doctor looked into Clara's eyes as she stood before him. He'd missed this; being cared for. It still seemed a lifetime ago that he'd dropped Donna off with her mind wiped clean of their adventures and he'd vowed to move on alone, but it was easier said than done. "You're right," he said softly, "she's always found me before. One way or another, eventually, she'll show up." He had to believe that it would be the case, he might not function too well knowing he was, to all intents and purposes, stuck. Forever.

"Are you trying to say I'm strange?" he asked quizzically, eyebrows cocked at her and looking slightly hurt. "Alright, I'll give you the fact that ancient Time Lords are a rare breed, but we do tend to make the rules, rather than keep them!" A thought struck The Doctor and he laughed, "oh, I could be a headmaster! I might make a good headmaster," he said thrusting his chest out and strutting. "That wouldn't get me into too much trouble, would it? Though, let's be honest, what good is a job if it's not at least a little trouble, or where's the fun?"

The Doctor glanced over at a group of spotty youths exploring the Science Fiction section, "from their complexions I doubt they've been out of their rooms since puberty. You might be a little more than they can cope with," he told Clara with a grin. That was a bit harsh, "I wasn't leaping from stack to stack," he told her as though it were the most natural thing in the world, "just, you know, having a look. It's an impressive shop! They should make a viewing gallery so people don't feel the need to climb the stacks, or expose themselves to young, impressionable, men in order to check the place out!" The Doctor fell into step beside her and sauntered along, pulling the occasional spine out to read the title, "I didn't actually get tasered! It was more a suggestion than a threat, and you wouldn't want to spend so much time with me if there weren't at least the threat of a little trouble in the air," he chuckled softly, nudging her with his elbow.

Clara reached out and lightly touched his arm. She wished she could take the sadness away, but she knew that she couldn’t really. All she could do was help keep his mind busy so he didn’t think too much about the TARDIS. “That’s the spirit,” she said, smiling. “You shall see her again. But for now, let’s just have a little fun, hm?”

“Well …. I thought you were strange the first time I saw you,” she replied honestly. “But now I know you and you’re not that weird to me. Others, they might think you escaped a mental hospital.” Especially if he started talking about things that they might not consider as factual. She really didn’t want to think about ways of busting him out of some hospital or anywhere else, really. She had to laugh at him when he started to strut around. He looked ridiculous. “We need to find you something where a little trouble won’t get you into trouble.”

She followed the Doctor’s eyeline and his sentence made complete sense. “Think so?” she asked with a small smirk. “I didn’t say you were! I only commented on the fact that you were climbing the stacks when you shouldn’t be. You should suggest that to them.” She kept on walking, nothing really catching her attention just yet. “You’re right, you do make things a lot more lively.” Life had definitely become more fun and more interesting since the Doctor came into her life. She couldn’t imagine life without him. “Did you go anywhere else after you left here?”

He looked down at Clara's hand, appreciating the gesture immensely, though he wasn't entirely certain she was right. "You know what you sounded like just then?" The Doctor asked, pushing away the tide of gloom that had fallen over their meeting. "You sounded just like my fairy Godmother - Doctor, you shall go to the ball!" he grinned, tossing an arm around her shoulders and giving Clara a tight hug. "Thank you," he whispered softly into her hair, letting her know just how much it meant to have her with him.

"Right, so I'm an acquired taste? I suppose that isn't the worst thing I've been called, or even in the top hundred," he told her thoughtfully, mentally filing through the insults that had been levelled at him. "All kinds of good things are an acquired taste, like Marmite." The Doctor swatted Clara's hand, "less of the mental hospital references, thank you! I still think Holly wasn't entirely pleased she had to let me out in the first place. Let's keep the rumours to a minimum, eh?" He supposed Headmaster wasn't the only job he could do, but that didn't mean it wasn't tempting. "I like trouble, wouldn't want to stay away from it completely," The Doctor agreed wholeheartedly, "and if I can tell people about my marriage to old Liz, without them trying to lock me up, then so much the better," he said with a grin. "Fine woman, that."

The Doctor gave her a sidewards look, "I think you might be a lot for most people, let alone them!" Also, her skirts did tend to run to the short side, which while infinitely lovely, didn't make for the best stack-climbing outfits. "Oooh, I could get a job as one of those ideas-y people. A professional suggester," he said with a grin, "I think I could do that, don't you? If only I knew where to apply..." he trailed off thoughtfully. "What do you think, any ideas? and you can't beat a bit of lively. You've a lovely, lively girl and couldn't cope with a dull, normal life, even if you had one." The Doctor knew that whether he'd come along or not, Clara would have done great things. She'd probably have been the first school teacher on Mars, or something similar. Ok, maybe something that didn't required quite so much time cooped up in a small ship with lots of screaming kids. "Well, I went to a few shops and found a brilliant cake shop! Do you know that there's a whole shop dedicated to just doughnuts here? Remarkable!"
