Who: The Doctor & Clara
Where: Exploring Portland
When: Saturday
What: Heading out for adventure and exploration
Status: Closed/On-going
Warnings: Nah!

It was rather exhilarating waking up in a new world once again, though he could quite understand why many other citizens felt confused, he just wanted to explore! From the moment he'd spoken to Holly he'd wanted to get out, see the world, find a companion to enjoy the fun with and see what trouble they could get into. Oh, obviously, it wasn't as easy as that! Holly hadn't allowed The Doctor out until she'd performed a myriad psychiatric evaluations on him, none of which were particularly reassuring if you were human. Which he wasn't, and once he'd convinced her of that he was free to go, sort of.

At least he had Clara still, he'd logged onto the network the second he'd been let out and reached out in the hope that someone would answer his call. Good old Clara! The Doctor had fairly bounced as he jogged to their new home and burst through the door, "come on Oswald, what are you doing cooped up in here, we've got a whole new world to explore!" he called out, rocking back on his heels as he looked hopefully up the stairs.

It wasn't long before she appeared and The Doctor met her half-way and gave her a warm hug, "glad you decided to tag along," he teased, leading her down and out into the Portland air. "So, no TARDIS, but plenty to do, I suspect." The Doctor nudged her and grinned, "bet there's plenty of trouble to get into here, and you should have seen the size of the book shop in town! Packed to the rafters. It'd give the TARDIS library a run for it's money, I'm sure!" He stopped in his tracks and looked at her with warmth, "exciting, isn't it? Not sure I like that Holly doctor, though. Far too nosey." He gave her chin an affectionate chuck and smiled, "so glad I get to share this with you!"

Getting taken the first time had been a huge surprise, but getting taken again was an even bigger surprise. Clara didn’t think she would be going through this again, but here she was in another universe with a group of different people. She could look at the situation in two ways: one, she could dwell on it and wonder why this was happening to her, or two: she could jut go along with it and see what kind of adventure this was going to turn into.

After she settled into her new home, she hopped right on the network to see who had been brought to Portland. She smiled a huge smile when she saw The Doctor’s network post. And only after a handful of comments they were plotting to explore the city. It should be fun and interesting. Then again, doing anything with The Doctor ended up being fun and interesting.

Before she could even put her sweater on she could hear The Doctor shouting from the bottom of the staircase. “I’m coming, I’m coming,” she called out as she left her bedroom and started down the stairs.

She hugged The Doctor right back. Sure, she had just seen him the night before, but it was great to see that he had been brought to the new city too. “Wouldn’t miss it,” she said with a smile. “How are you feeling about that?” She knew how much he cared about the TARDIS. “Hm, I don’t know about that. The TARDIS sure does have a lot of books, among other things.” She started to walk out with him, only stopped when he stopped. “She was very nosy, wasn’t she?” And a little creepy, but she left that part out. “Me too.” She smiled at him. “So which way shall we go,” she asked once they reached the end of the driveway. She looked right and then left. “I say we go left.”

"Right then, left it is," The Doctor wiggled his eyebrows happy to let Clara take the lead. It was one of the many things he appreciated about this particular companion; her ability to make decisions rather than just follow his lead. It was refreshing! Oh, he was sure there would come a time where a life-or-death situation was thwarted by throwing her over his shoulder and running in the other direction, but that wasn't going to happen right now, was it?

"Ummm, it's going to be sad to loose the extra space," he answered with a frown. "The translation matrix comes in handy too, though that doesn't seem to be a problem so far. Mostly, I'll just miss the tinkering," The Doctor admitted. When he wasn't dashing around sorting out problems he was usually under the TARDIS, adding functionality to the already mighty beast. It'd been fun, though he was sure there would be other things to occupy him here. "Might have to get a job," he mused, half to himself. Though he had no idea what he might do, that wouldn't get him or someone else killed, at least.

"I don't suppose she made you fill out all those weird forms too, did she? Of course not, you're perfectly sane, unlike some people we could mention!" The Doctor grumbled to himself as he walked. "You didn't like her either, did you? Excellent taste! Ooh, look, there's the book shop!" he pointed it out to Clara as they rounded the corner. "Could go for a poke around, if you wanted, or just get the lay of the land. Quite a nice land, by all accounts," he grinned happily. There was so much to see and learn, and with Clara by his side he could hardly go wrong. Now, if only there were a Dalek invasion or something it would all be perfect!

Clara went left and started to walk right along side The Doctor. Where they were going, she had no idea, but that was the whole point. They would just randomly walk and see where they would end up.

She glanced up at The Doctor when he spoke. “Maybe it’ show up at a later date?” It was a possibility. “I think we’ll be fine with the language around here. I don’t think we’ll be running into anything we won’t be able to understand.” She was going to need to find him something to do. That would be her first mission: keep The Doctor busy while they were stuck in the new world. “You. With a proper job?” she question, eyebrow raised. She just couldn’t imagine him with a job.

“No…” She wondered if she should question what had happened when he arrived, but she decided not to and answered his question instead. “Not really. It was a bit odd talking to something that wasn’t real.” When the Doctor pointed out the bookstore, she looked. “Let’s go look inside,” she answered with a smile. She grabbed his hand and dragged him across the street and into the bookstore. “So, you weren’t kidding when you said it had a lot.”

"Yeah, maybe," The Doctor's hands slipped into the pockets of his suit as he mooched along beside Clara, suddenly feeling a little bereft without his trusty Blue Box. They'd been through so much together, and to think of her out there in the middle of space without him was... "think she's alright without me?" he asked in a small voice, knowing the question would sound downright daft to anyone else, but to Clara, who the TARDIS fairly well, perhaps not so much.

"I could do a job!" He answered, slightly affronted by her disbelief in his suggestion. "I mean, how hard can it be," The Doctor nudged her playfully, "you wrangle kids all day and even teach them some English here and there. Maybe I could teach them history," he mused. "I could certainly tell them a thing or two about dear Elizabeth," he flashed Clara a smirk and raised his eyebrows, "which would probably get me expelled. Can teachers get expelled?" he wondered aloud as they walked.

So it was just him that was treated to the tests. Bloody typical! "Couldn't agree more. There was something particularly strange about her being a doctor. Rather a poor bedside manner, if I do say so myself," The Doctor said, giving Clara a particularly disgusted frown, as though only really things should get to call themselves 'Doctor'. "Oh, you're going to like this!" he cheered up as he was led towards the store.

"Hey, when I tell you that a place has a lot of a thing, you better believe there's a lot of a thing," The Doctor said as Clara looked around in astonishment, as the grin on his face grew bigger. Here, he picked her up above the stacks so that she had a view of the vast space and the sheer volume of tomes. "They didn't like it when I climbed the stacks, thought you should see it without the hassle," he told her as he turned her around. "It's brilliant, isn't it?"

“Yeah,” Clara said with a nod of her head, “I think she’ll be fine.” It was so sad watching him right now. She really wished this place had pulled the TARDIS right along with them, but it didn’t and now The Doctor looked like a sad, little kid who got their favorite toy taken away from them.

“Are you sure about that?” It still wasn’t something that she could picture in her head. The Doctor with a real job… nope, it just didn’t work for her. “Ooh, that actually sounds like a good idea.” But then she saw the smirk that he was wearing on his face. “Or maybe not.” That smirk always meant trouble. “Yes, they can get expelled. So, I think we need to think of something else for you.”

“The whole thing felt very impersonal.” And a little annoying. Great, they wanted a way to let everyone know what was going on, but couldn’t they have real people do it? Not some creepy blonde woman who wasn’t even real?

So far, Clara definitely liked what she was seeing. “Okay, the next time you tell me something has a lot of things, I will believe you.” She had a feeling they were going to be roaming the store for quite awhile and just before she started to walk off she was being grabbed picked up. “A little warning next time,” she muttered, “And don’t look up my skirt…” Seeing the huge store from the ground was one thing, but seeing it from her new point of view was another thing. “You really did that?” She asked, glancing down at him. “No, wait, of course you did.” She nodded. “It really is. Now let me down.”

He kicked his feet, scuffing his Converses as he walked, "what if she's still stuck in Breakwater Point and can't get to me?" The Doctor asked, the reality of their situation only just becoming clear. "I mean, I tried everything I could think to get past whatever wall was thrown up between our world and theirs, and nothing. I might never see the TARDIS again," he said, stopping dead in his tracks.

"It can't be that hard, can it? Millions of people do it every day, after all," though Clara made a valid point, he wasn't just anyone, and his boredom threshold tended to be worn thin incredibly easily. "You don't think an alternative history teacher would be a good thing?" he asked with a grin, "cause there are a lot of things you teachers have wrong, you know," The Doctor told her with a playful nudge. "So what do you think I should be doing, then?" he was genuinely interested, because he wasn't really one hundred percent clear what constituted a proper job. After all, there were poets and painters that didn't earn a penny, but they did incredible work!

The Doctor hadn't thought about warning Clara, given that she clearly enjoyed living on the edge if she was travelling with him! "Sorry," he yelled up to her with a grin, "and I promise, I'm not looking up your skirt!" He looked around and then added, "though I can't speak for the rest of the customers. Some of them don't look as if they've ever seen a girl before," he told her as he eased her back to the floor, making sure her skirt wasn't tucked into her tights as he did so. "The stacks aren't nearly as unstable as they look, though. I tried explaining that to the security guard, but he wasn't in the mood to listen," The Doctor told her. "Actually, he was more in the mood to point his taser at me and order me out of the shop. Still, it was fun seeing it from up there, wasn't it?"

Well, Clara hadn’t thought about that. But, like him, she had no real idea when it came to the whereabouts of the TARDIS. It was all just pure guessing and hoping. “You shouldn’t think like that,” she said as she stopped and faced The Doctor. “Maybe she’ll show up at a later date. We don’t know how this place works.”

“But those millions of people aren’t, well, you.” She wasn’t saying there was anything wrong with him, but he did do things a bit outside of the box, which could get him into trouble at a normal job. “Well, sure, but I wouldn’t want you getting the boot on your first or second day of teaching. You would have to follow the rules.” And she just couldn’t see him doing that. “I don’t know,” she said with a slight shrug of her shoulders, “something that won’t get you into too much trouble.”

She had seen some of the looks they were getting, but she didn’t care. “Maybe they haven’t,” she joked. Once she was back on the ground, she did a quick check to make sure she wasn’t flashing anyone her naughty bits and then she started to walk. “They still don’t want you climbing around the shelves like a monkey.” She looked at him and shook his head. “Can’t even go into a book store alone without getting into trouble. We’re going to have a tougher time getting you a job.”

The Doctor looked into Clara's eyes as she stood before him. He'd missed this; being cared for. It still seemed a lifetime ago that he'd dropped Donna off with her mind wiped clean of their adventures and he'd vowed to move on alone, but it was easier said than done. "You're right," he said softly, "she's always found me before. One way or another, eventually, she'll show up." He had to believe that it would be the case, he might not function too well knowing he was, to all intents and purposes, stuck. Forever.

"Are you trying to say I'm strange?" he asked quizzically, eyebrows cocked at her and looking slightly hurt. "Alright, I'll give you the fact that ancient Time Lords are a rare breed, but we do tend to make the rules, rather than keep them!" A thought struck The Doctor and he laughed, "oh, I could be a headmaster! I might make a good headmaster," he said thrusting his chest out and strutting. "That wouldn't get me into too much trouble, would it? Though, let's be honest, what good is a job if it's not at least a little trouble, or where's the fun?"

The Doctor glanced over at a group of spotty youths exploring the Science Fiction section, "from their complexions I doubt they've been out of their rooms since puberty. You might be a little more than they can cope with," he told Clara with a grin. That was a bit harsh, "I wasn't leaping from stack to stack," he told her as though it were the most natural thing in the world, "just, you know, having a look. It's an impressive shop! They should make a viewing gallery so people don't feel the need to climb the stacks, or expose themselves to young, impressionable, men in order to check the place out!" The Doctor fell into step beside her and sauntered along, pulling the occasional spine out to read the title, "I didn't actually get tasered! It was more a suggestion than a threat, and you wouldn't want to spend so much time with me if there weren't at least the threat of a little trouble in the air," he chuckled softly, nudging her with his elbow.

Clara reached out and lightly touched his arm. She wished she could take the sadness away, but she knew that she couldn’t really. All she could do was help keep his mind busy so he didn’t think too much about the TARDIS. “That’s the spirit,” she said, smiling. “You shall see her again. But for now, let’s just have a little fun, hm?”

“Well …. I thought you were strange the first time I saw you,” she replied honestly. “But now I know you and you’re not that weird to me. Others, they might think you escaped a mental hospital.” Especially if he started talking about things that they might not consider as factual. She really didn’t want to think about ways of busting him out of some hospital or anywhere else, really. She had to laugh at him when he started to strut around. He looked ridiculous. “We need to find you something where a little trouble won’t get you into trouble.”

She followed the Doctor’s eyeline and his sentence made complete sense. “Think so?” she asked with a small smirk. “I didn’t say you were! I only commented on the fact that you were climbing the stacks when you shouldn’t be. You should suggest that to them.” She kept on walking, nothing really catching her attention just yet. “You’re right, you do make things a lot more lively.” Life had definitely become more fun and more interesting since the Doctor came into her life. She couldn’t imagine life without him. “Did you go anywhere else after you left here?”

He looked down at Clara's hand, appreciating the gesture immensely, though he wasn't entirely certain she was right. "You know what you sounded like just then?" The Doctor asked, pushing away the tide of gloom that had fallen over their meeting. "You sounded just like my fairy Godmother - Doctor, you shall go to the ball!" he grinned, tossing an arm around her shoulders and giving Clara a tight hug. "Thank you," he whispered softly into her hair, letting her know just how much it meant to have her with him.

"Right, so I'm an acquired taste? I suppose that isn't the worst thing I've been called, or even in the top hundred," he told her thoughtfully, mentally filing through the insults that had been levelled at him. "All kinds of good things are an acquired taste, like Marmite." The Doctor swatted Clara's hand, "less of the mental hospital references, thank you! I still think Holly wasn't entirely pleased she had to let me out in the first place. Let's keep the rumours to a minimum, eh?" He supposed Headmaster wasn't the only job he could do, but that didn't mean it wasn't tempting. "I like trouble, wouldn't want to stay away from it completely," The Doctor agreed wholeheartedly, "and if I can tell people about my marriage to old Liz, without them trying to lock me up, then so much the better," he said with a grin. "Fine woman, that."

The Doctor gave her a sidewards look, "I think you might be a lot for most people, let alone them!" Also, her skirts did tend to run to the short side, which while infinitely lovely, didn't make for the best stack-climbing outfits. "Oooh, I could get a job as one of those ideas-y people. A professional suggester," he said with a grin, "I think I could do that, don't you? If only I knew where to apply..." he trailed off thoughtfully. "What do you think, any ideas? and you can't beat a bit of lively. You've a lovely, lively girl and couldn't cope with a dull, normal life, even if you had one." The Doctor knew that whether he'd come along or not, Clara would have done great things. She'd probably have been the first school teacher on Mars, or something similar. Ok, maybe something that didn't required quite so much time cooped up in a small ship with lots of screaming kids. "Well, I went to a few shops and found a brilliant cake shop! Do you know that there's a whole shop dedicated to just doughnuts here? Remarkable!"
