"I've been wanting to ask you about Tonks for a long time, too," Percy said one morning.
Remus raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. He wasn't sure he was up for this discussion.
"Um." Percy faltered, looking at his fingernails.
"Have you had enough of my stories about Sirius, then?" Remus asked.
Percy cocked his head. "No—that's not it at all. I just. I know you and she were married, but you told me once you've never been with a woman."
Remus sighed. He definitely wasn't up for this discussion, but he felt he owed Percy the truth.
"I haven't, ever," he said, his head in his hands. "I asked Tonks to marry me, yes, after two years of her following me around like a lost puppy. I was weak, and I gave into her pleading. I did love her, but unfortunately it seems I didn't respect her enough to tell her that I didn't love her in the way a husband should love a wife."
Percy's eyes were bright when Remus finally looked up at him.
"I only asked because I—I heard something," he said, and he stopped.
"You heard she was pregnant." Remus's words fell like stones upon the table that seemed suddenly vast between the two of them.
Percy bit his lip, and he nodded.
"She was," replied Remus. "A few months along when she—the night we all rescued Harry."
"But it wasn't yours."
Remus shook his head. "There was no way it could have been, but it would've looked bad if she hadn't been married. You know just as well as I do how Wizarding society feels about unwed mothers. I couldn't ever—we tried, but I told you about that time with Alice. It was much the same. When Tonks—and the baby, whomever's it was—died that night, I thought I would never feel right again for guilt."
Percy shook his head. "Why guilt? Her death wasn't your fault."
Breathing was becoming difficult. "That's not why. I was unfaithful to her." Remus paused and let his words sink in. "It was a short engagement and an even shorter marriage, but I still managed to be unfaithful on several occasions. I'm not proud of it, Percy, and I still carry residual guilt inside me from those times that I strayed. I should have been honest—with myself and with Tonks. But I wasn't. But now, at least, I can be honest with you."
Percy looked as if he didn't know which question to ask first.
"Go ahead," said Remus, suddenly weary, sitting back in his chair.
Percy only shook his head, still looking overwhelmed. "I hadn't realised—" he said.
"Hadn't realised I'm not the faithful companion you thought I'd always been?"
"Remus, that's not—" Percy bolted out of his chair.
Remus put a hand up. "I've always been faithful to you," he said, "And I always will be. There's no question. I'm not going to go out to Muggle pubs just to find someone to fuck when I have what I want—what I need—here at home." He voice was gravely, and his breath came in shudders.
Percy sank back into his chair. "You did that?"
"What—had anonymous public sex with possibly-diseased Muggles to fuck away my uneasiness and fear? Yes. I did."
The declaration hung in the air like a stormcloud, threatening to burst.
"I can't listen to this," Percy rasped. "I didn't think that when I asked a simple question—"
"There's never a simple answer, Percy. Not with me."
Percy left the room, and then he left the flat.
