Even for an angel, running around in Purgatory was tiring. Keeping one step ahead of all the creatures that could sense and feel him in this place was taking its toll, and Castiel was starting to wonder if it would just be better to give up. The Leviathan were there at every turn, and every time he teleported away there was always just something else.
He was tired. He was dirty. He was… well. It didn't matter what he was. Dean had gotten out, he'd seen to that himself and even if it was lonely here, he knew he'd done the right thing. He deserved this. It was his penance.
There didn't even seem to be time to stop to breathe lately. He blinked in and out of existence, one moment by that little stream, the next deep in the dead forest. Vampires, gorilla beasts -- it never stopped. He'd just run into a whole nest of vampires, and even with his powers considered his options and knew he was out numbered. So he did the only thing he could: teleported away again.
Except when he reappeared, it wasn't where he expected. At all. This didn't even look like Purgatory, but instead a strange little town on earth. Somewhere he knew he'd never been before, and that was strange all on its' own. He wavered in place before going completely still and letting his eyes take in this new surprising setting.
Perhaps he was dreaming? Maybe he was dead? He never had quite figured out where angels went when they died, after all.
