Spare some change?
Who: OPEN TO EVERYONE. PLEASE COME IN. :D
What: Dov got kicked out by Charlie, so now he's standing outside Pax Letale asking for donations. And being none too kind about his half-sister. Acting like a kicked puppy, mostly.
Where: Just outside the entrance to Pax.
When: Saturday, August 13. 5:15 PM.
Warnings: Uh... I'm gonna go ahead and say language.
Notes: It'd be especially awesome if someone could come in and tell Charlie what's been going on, too.

Humiliating. That'd be the best word for what Charlotte had done to him last night. He'd come to try and get answers, give answers, have some sort of better understanding of this half-sister he hadn't known about. And what did it get him? Thrown out by his collar. Literally. He'd sort of sat there for a few moments on the hallway floor in complete disbelief. After that, he'd gone back to his car, had a smoke (or two or three) and passed out in the back seat.

Upon checking his wallet when he woke up the next afternoon, he found he was a lot lower on funds than he originally thought. Meaning if he didn't cough up some cash fast, he'd be stranded in California for quite some time. And with the hostility he'd received so far, that wasn't exactly the best sounding plan. He just wanted to get back to Catskill, sell the house, get back into Brooklyn and go from there. But how the hell was he going to afford that?

Being babyfaced and young looking had its perks at times- coming across as being innocent and sweet being one of them. So for the past hour he'd been standing outside of his sister's apartment building, looking pouty and dejected. Spare some change? he asked whenever someone would come in or out of the building, his accent toned down, voice soft. My sister- Charlotte Fairica, she's in #103- she kicked me out onto the street and I need to get home to New York, can you please help me?

So far he'd made twenty dollars and he was spreading the good word of her being a total jerk. If he kept it up maybe he could get something to eat while he was at it.

Dov snorted and nodded to Ben. "Yeah, I'll say." It felt like things had been going steadily downhill since his mother had been killed, with no real sign that things would start looking up any time soon. His optimism on this whole... issue was starting to slip. If Charlie even came out, she wasn't going to be very happy and she definitely wasn't going to give him another chance. He'd scrape up some money somehow, go back to New York, and pretend the whole thing never happened and he didn't have a half-sister at all.

"D'ya really think she's gonna come out? I mean uh, ya know her better than me, obviously." Dov wondered if they were just wasting their time. His sister didn't seem too... Friendly? Lenient? Forgiving? Any of those, really. He sucked his bottom lip into his mouth, waiting. What if he just made things worse?

"Uh... I don't really got the kind of friends ya can depend on. More like acquaintances, ya know? All the real uh, 'dependable friends' we had kinda ducked out on us. And I don't got any family 'cept my dad and... he ain't goin' anywhere for another six years or so."

A freaking summons. It was like being back at basic, put through dozens of mindless drills only to be singled out because you were either too good or just slacking at the back of the group or for no real reason at all. For a moment Charlie toyed with not answering it and exiting the building in some other, more round about fashion - that's what back doors were for, after all.

She was dressed in her all black security uniform, hair up in a pony tail and was just making sure that Jack was fed and walked before leaving for work when the concierge politely informed her that her presence was desired (now that was a nice word, desired, not demanded) in the lobby. The request (that ol' concierge, he really knew how to turn a phrase) had come from none other than Elias, and for a moment she wondered if he had some new theory on the black out, or if there was something else that needed to be done to her apartment to safeguard it.

In the end, she decided it would be too much hassle to walk all the way around the building to get to her bike - they might see her through the glass front doors of the building, and what drama that might evoke later on she had no desire to deal with. So once she had all of her necessities in order (wallet, cell phone, keys, bike helmet and her jacket on over her security shirt), she closed up her apartment and walked the short distance to the lobby.

Elias was there, as predicted, but what she did not expect was the two other parties - one of them being Dov, whom she'd told to leave just last night. Her face registered her shock, which was quickly eaten up by anger. If she was about to be told off by Elias for kicking the boy out, well, wasn't he just sticking his nose where it didn't belong! And who was this other guy? Charlie didn't recognize him, and for the moment she swept all thought of him aside in favor of zeroing in on the two people who were instantly pissing her off.

"The fuck is this? I told you to leave," she started, ever so delicate in handling situations, directing the phrases toward Dov. "And what're you doin'? This is none of yer business," she continued, turning on Elias next.

Honestly, Ben was just quite happy not to have that aggressive stare turned on him, felt almost shielded by the two people she recognised and was highly pissed off with. Maybe he'd just step back a little, sink into the background and watch this rather than getting involved - one of Ben's mottos in life was that it was often better to observe than partake. He'd add an addendum to that: 'especially when a seriously pissed off woman seems to be involved'.

The atmosphere changed dramatically upon Charlie's entrance. Her anger saturated the air, set teeth on edge, and, for Elias, became the catalyst for something just as potent: disgust. When the fire of her fury turned itself on Elias, he met it with dark, cold iciness. The stone that had been making its way in his expression then solidified, but his eyes stayed violently expressive -- seething with contempt. The lids dropped a fraction of an inch as Charlie challenged him. He didn't turn away immediately, but after it was made clear that he both heard, and then ignored, her question, he looked back to Dov.

And at that moment, something changed in him. It was subtle. It was nothing so detectable as his expressionless face or shouting eyes. It began as a tugging in the center of his stomach, rose into his chest, then opened his mouth for him. "When did you last eat, Dov?" he asked. And then, swiftly checking the understated bit of metal on his wrist, he continued, "It's about that hour anyway. Let's grab something to eat. My treat. Ben, you're welcome to join us."

And only after he stood, did he look back at Charlie. "Apologies," he said, tonelessly, "For interrupting you. I see I was mistaken."

Dov clenched his jaw as Charlie entered, her displeasure at the sight of him seemingly just as strong as it was the night before. It hurt, but he wasn't going to let her know that. No one needed to know that. Who needs her, right? She's just some stuck-up... Rich bitch. Yeah. Don't need her around. He'd get back to New York somehow. He kept his breaths slow and controlled, trying his hardest to force any bit of emotion he could from his face but doing a poor job of it, brows furrowed, biting his lower lip.

He looked up as Elias turned around, surprised by the question. Why this guy seemed to care so much about him he didn't know, but he wasn't about to complain. "Uh... Yesterday afternoon?" Dov couldn't help but smile a little through his frustration, the promise of something that wasn't snack food from a gas station all too appealing. "Really? Thanks, man, I'm starvin'." At least he could forget about all of this family shit and get something to eat. An effort not totally wasted.

So they were going to drag her out here, and be surprised that she was upset? No, that's not how it was going to work, not at all. She looked from Elias to Dov and back again, disliking what she saw on both men's faces. Judgmental shit, which was entirely undeserved on her part - why Elias kept insisting on messing about in things that did not involve him was beyond her, and the safety measures on her apartment were one thing, but this, this was too personal.

What had Dov been doing? What had he said? How much did Elias know? Outwardly her face exhibited annoyance bordering on rage, but inside she could not handle all of this. Three people, two of which had expectations of her (in her mind, at least, Charlie was always quick to assume) and a third who she had no idea who he was and would much rather have not had present at all. It was all enough to enact what would easily be labeled as a 'freak out'.

"Hold the fuck up," she started, stepping forward and into Elias' space. "You don't get to drag me out here, and then fuckin' dismiss me because you don't like my fuckin' attitude. What the hell is this all about?" Charlie was never one to let things go easily, if at all - and now her temper was climbing fast, hiding the fear, the anger boiling over without preempt. "What did he tell you? 'Cause whatever it is, it's a fuckin' lie, I'll tell you that right now."

The same force that made him ask when Dov'd eaten only intensified when Elias first saw how the kid responded to Charlie -- and then how Dov responded to the offer for dinner. It. Hurt. The pain - not compassion, not pity, but pain - was what surprised Elias more than even Charlie's outrage. Lately, he felt protective over certain strangers that should have meant nothing to him. But unlike Charlie, this one wasn't resistant. This one actually accepted ... even asked, in his way. No, he had no reason to care. But. He. Did.

When Charlie stepped into Elias' personal space, Elias remained an unmovable wall. He stared down hard at the little firecracker, nothing in his face betraying his emotions -- save that ice-green stare that could have started fires.

"You told me that you sent him away, so clearly he is, as you said, none of your business, either. He --" Elias jabbed an index finger in Dov's general direction, "--told me he hasn't eaten in a day. He--" Elias twisted his wrist emphatically, still pointing toward the New Yorker, "--told me he would join me for dinner tonight. And he --" Elias set his hand far-too-calmly back at his side, "-- told me he was stranded here, not that it's any of your business. As for me, I have given you my apologies for quite clearly inconveniencing you with a matter it would seem is far beyond your desire to address. And, as it seems you are bound for work, I will excuse myself from your presence. Now."

And although the words said that he was excusing himself, the tone said that Charlie was excused. With that, Elias turned his back on Charlie and focused instead on the kid from New York. "Shall we?" he asked, waving an arm briefly toward the far side of the lobby, where the main exit waited.

Behind him, he had the sense that Charlie was ready to draw a weapon on him or Dov or both.

Dov was completely floored by Elias' reaction, to say the least. Eyes wide, he could only stare as this complete stranger was actually defending him. They'd met, what, ten minutes ago? People Dov had known for years and years hadn't defended him like this. Why did this guy care so much, anyway? He wasn't really sure how he felt about it. On one hand it was good, because hell, nobody else seemed to care much, but at the same time, why him? Somehow, though, it wasn't as creepy to Dov as he expected. Huh.

It took a second for Dov to even respond to Elias once the man had turned toward him again, mouth hanging open a little as he tried to process what had just occurred. "Uh... Uh, yeah, let's get outta here." Holy shit, he thought. This guy is a total badass! Part of him wanted to look back at Charlie, but at the same time he didn't want to risk... getting his eyes clawed out or whatever she might do.

Her jaw dropped open, completely ready to sling another curse-laden retort, but they were already turning away. She was probably going to be late for work (not that she really gave a shit, in the long run), and frustration made her curl her free hand into a fist. This was absolutely ridiculous - there was no reason for Elias to be doing this, and she wondered if he was acting like this out of spite for the fact that she hadn't readily accepted his odd gifts. Obviously whatever Dov had told Elias, it registered over Charlie herself, and she couldn't do anything but watch them walk away.

She snapped her jaw closed with an audible click of teeth, and followed them out the door, though not to give chase. Her motorcycle was in the same direction, though thankfully on the opposite side of the parking lot. Jerky, anger-laced motions got her helmet on and her things packed away safely for the quick ride; a kick to her starter got the bike going, and she was out of the parking lot, Pax Letale, and the situation that was quickly spiraling out of her control.
