I promised to knock
Who: Idris and Vanessa
What: Vanessa’s smoke alarm decides to be evil.
Where: Vanessa’s apartment, #205
When: 3:00 a.m. Wednesday Morning
Warnings: cursing

Vanessa had a long day at the hair salon, having had worked from open to close. By the time she had gotten home, all she had wanted to do was to sit down and pass out, but of course that never happened, she could never go right to sleep. Starved, but not in the mood for a cereal, Vanessa took a list of phone numbers off of the fridge. It was a handmade list on pink lined paper with names and numbers of various take-out restaurants. Some were crossed out and some were highlighted. She crossed out the ones she despised, and highlighted the ones that were good. She picked a random Chinese take-out number from off of the list, and ordered steamed dumplings, shrimp lo-mein and white rice.
She had to work early the next day, and wouldn’t have any time to do anything to her hair, which meant Vanessa would put her hair up in rag rollers. It took forever to do, but when you woke up the next morning, all you had to do was remove the rags and her hair was done. It made her already curly hair more uniform with tighter curls. After a glass of wine or two, Vanessa went to sleep, accidently leaving her Chinese food out on the dark cherry stained coffee table in the living-room.

At approximately 3 a.m., Vanessa was woken up by a loud beep in the kitchen. It wasn’t loud enough to say, be heard by everyone in the apartment, but Idris might have heard it. Was it an alarm clock, her microwave, cell phone? Nope, it was a smoke alarm that was very poorly placed on the top of the ceiling, near the stove. Vanessa grabbed a rickety kitchen chair and stood on it, trying to reach the smoke alarm with no luck. Not bothering to put the white unsteady chair back, she climbed up on the counter top and tried to reach the alarm. She was able to reach it, but for some reason, she couldn’t unscrew the alarm from the wall, it was completely stuck. Vanessa was unsure if she was just at a bad angle and couldn’t reach it properly, or if it just wasn’t going to come off. The beeping repeated every minute like clockwork, clearly the batteries needed to be replaced. Trying a different strategy, Vanessa grabbed the tall broom she had. Before she went back to the smoke alarm, she opened and unlocked her door, figuring someone would hear it eventually and come knocking. Vanessa tried to smack the smoke alarm off of the ceiling, definitely banging the ceiling in the process. This made the smoke alarm go wild and it started beeping very loudly over and over again.

Her hair in white rag rollers, dressed in a light pink tee-shirt shirt and little yellow ducky shorts, Vanessa was getting angry. Vanessa’s apartment was put together, for the most part. In the living-room she had a large green sofa, the dark cherry coffee table, matching end tables, and of course a decent sized television. The dvd player was still not hooked up, and the dvds were in a box in front of the dvd tower. Decorating had randomly been one of the first things she did. The living-room was decorated mostly with black and white photos of Miami and New York, but there were also random family pictures she had converted to black and white. The kitchen had a grey table with white cheap chairs, but the table itself was still covered in boxes, mostly kitchen stuff that Vanessa never used. She had decorated the kitchen with as much pink as possible.

Idris wouldn't deny he enjoyed the pleasure of late night tv. The problem was, as usual, finding something that would hold his interest long enough. He'd settled for watching a repeat of a news program he'd missed earlier due to work, then went to bed a little later than usual Tueday evening. It was no surprise that his slumber would be interrupted by an incessant beeping that at first he thought he'd only imagined. But life had a sense of humor, and maybe this was a less than quiet whisper of karmic retribution, just punishment for a later weekday bedtime.

He waited what must have been a good ten minutes but when the beeping didn't stop, Idris began to get annoyed. Tossing, turning, and trying to ignore the sound was having absolutely no effect on his ability to get back to sleep. Getting out of bed with a rather large yawn, Idris headed out of his bedroom to discover that the closer he went to his main hallway and thus the kitchen, the louder the beeping became. It sounded like it was coming from the floor itself--rather, the ceiling of someone else's apartment. And then there was a banging sound added to the mix, which stopped shortly after it had begun. Idris' brows furrowed in tired confusion that overwhelmed the very slim feeling of alarm he felt.

Though he was still drowsy, slowly he recalled that Vanessa lived on the second floor. In fact, she was the only person he knew that lived below him--possibly directly, if life was up for being extra funny tonight. Well, there was only one way to find out, one way to actually get himself the sleep he needed. He figured he might as well head downstairs and see what exactly was going on; if he could help, Idris would be more than willing to do so.

This was how, at a quarter past 3 A.M., Idris found himself outside of an apartment door clearly labeled with the number 205. Stifling a yawn, he raised his hand and knocked in three quick bursts upon the door. There was no doubt now that he was downstairs that he'd reached the apartment with the beeping culprit. He lazily adjusted his sleeping pants while waiting for an answer, glad he had slept in somewhat appropriate sleeping clothes: a white wife-beater and brown loafer slippers completed his early morning outfit.

Broom in hand, Vanessa went to the front door and opened it quickly. When the door opened and Idris was on the other side she instantly became humiliated. Here she was in juvenile little yellow ducky pajama shorts that were entirely too short on her and white rag curlers, not exactly the height of fashion. She didn’t get embarrassed very easily, in fact she couldn’t remember the last time she had, but to be dressed like this, with no makeup to boot, in front of the guy you were trying to get to know better and possibly date, well, it was completely humiliating.

Barefooted, Vanessa ushered Idris in. She wanted to shout: ‘Good fucking God I forgot that you lived upstairs. It figures, it really does, it would be you and I would wake you up looking like this.’ However, exhausted she pointed the broom at the smoke alarm that was being stubborn. “Make it fucking stop. It’s stuck and now I’ve pissed it off!”

Oh, yeah. Life really was up for being funny at this early hour. Of course it was Vanessa's apartment door he'd just knocked on, which was almost ironic. Nevertheless, Idris was subtly glad it was a familiar face he saw, despite the two of them having met only once so far. He wasn't sure if he'd have been able to deal with a complete stranger in the tired state he was in, especially one that had sworn twice to his face.

The duckling pajama shorts made it easier. A lot easier, considering just how short they were. Idris wasn't a man to easily miss things that were so readily displayed in front of him, nevermind that Vanessa's choice of sleepwear certainly wasn't for his benefit. But the curlers would take a little getting used to, probably.

Idris was then inside her apartment, loafers padding softly across the floor. The apartment layout--from what he could see of it--was quite similar if not the same as his, though the decorating was very different from his own personal tastes. He followed the direction she was pointing the broom in, seeing as well as hearing the alarm now at close range (which wasn't doing anything for his mood, lightened as it had been by seeing a bit of bare leg).

"All right, all right. You probably need to change the batteries. It's sure as hell more annoying up close. Woke me straight up, actually." Idris frowned, for if Vanessa was still relatively new to the area as he was, that meant the people employed by the apartment manager should already have made certain all the smoke detectors were ready to go. Unfortunately for both of them tonight, this did not seem to be so--or at least Vanessa's apartment had been forgotten somehow.

Idris walked into the kitchen and tried to make his sleep-deprived mind work faster. He glanced at Vanessa, smiling despite the situation and both of their moods. Really, with curlers like that in her hair it was hard not to smile. They were almost endearing. "Nice way to meet again, by the way. I love secret 3 A.M. conspiracies, don't you?" There was only a hint of sarcasm to his words, brought on by the steady beeping. He was pretty sure he felt the soft throb of a headache beginning, and couldn't imagine how Vanessa must be feeling.

“I know that I need to change the batteries, I even HAVE batteries, it’s just that when I try to get the smoke alarm down to change the batteries, it doesn’t come off. It’s like someone super-glued it to the ceiling as a cruel, cruel joke.” Which probably wasn’t the case, but they, you never know. Vanessa was highly frustrated and losing her cool, whatever cool she had at 3 a.m., and when Idris tried to be amusing through faint sarcasm and wit, she tried to keep a straight face as best as she could, but she just couldn’t help it. Laughing, Vanessa shook her head. “Oh it’s an absolute pleasure to meet you again under these conditions. I told you I’d bang on your ceiling didn’t I?”
She smiled and opened the fridge, seeing what she could offer Idris.

She bent into the fridge, completely forgetting her short shorts, and probably giving Idris a little show. “Would you like a beer, lemonade, diet coke or water?” She grabbed a bottle of water for herself while she was in the fridge, the last thing she needed was soda at this hour. She stood up and out of the fridge, but kept it open for his answer, adjusting her shorts. As she did this she realized what she had probably just done, and blushed a bit, it figured. The shorts were officially getting thrown out. “Maybe you can have better luck getting the smoke alarm off than me.”

"Yeah, but I never thought it'd be this soon." Idris shot a cheeky grin at Vanessa before looking up at the smoke detector and deciding on his course of action. It was placed rather high on the ceiling, adjacent to the wall above the stove. Idris was not the tallest of men, but he certainly wasn't the shortest, either. Overall it would be far easier to take the cover off the smoke detector at a more level angle, and then they could replace the batteries--or if it was only an issue of them being loose, adjust the damned things accordingly. "Do you have a foot ladder," he started to ask, looking back to Vanessa.

The sight that met his eyes was something best saved for another time and place, though regardless of this, Idris couldn't help but let his gaze linger a few seconds longer than necessary. It certainly didn't hurt anything and he wasn't going to complain about the view, despite it being covered by cheerful yellow ducklings.

"Water's fine," he replied. Idris smirked impulsively to himself before Vanessa turned around, the ghost of it remaining as her cheeks flushed, hands modestly attending to her shorts. "Now, about that foot ladder, before the beeping drives us both insane."

A foot ladder, a foot ladder, Vanessa tried to think if she had something. She had unpacked in such a fury that she had forgotten what she had or didn’t have. She had to have SOMETHING, because some of the pictures she had were hung pretty high. She got a water bottle out of the fridge for Idris and set it down on the counter. A moment or two later, she dashed to the hallway closet and got out a stepstool, it wasn’t much, but it should be enough to reach the smoke alarm. Vanessa decided as she grabbed the step stool out from the hallway closet and opened it for Idris, that the set up of the smoke alarm was absolutely ridiculous and discriminating against non tall people. Who put a smoke alarm that high? “I’m sorry for this waking you up.”

While Vanessa was off to hunt down some sort of ladder or another, Idris opened the water bottle she'd gotten for him and took a good swig of it, replacing the cap and setting it back down on the counter. It wouldn't do to drink all of it right now and have his sleep interrupted a second time before he was supposed to actually start his day. Vanessa returned almost before he knew it, unfolding a small step stool for his usage. "Great; that'll definitely work," he murmured as she finished her task. The crusade to end the beeping was nearly complete.

He shrugged when Vanessa apologized, giving her a half-smile. "This sort of thing happens now and then. Unless you set it off as an excuse to see me again, but I'd rather we met in...quieter circumstances." Idris grinned, then turned his attention to the noisy problem. It was time for this thing to shut the hell up already. Stepping upon the stool, he reached up and pulled at the loud device, resulting in it coming completely off the bracket. Idris stepped down from his perch and turned the alarm over in his hands, looking and finding the battery compartment door easily in the kitchen lighting.

"One more favor. You have a screwdriver? This thing's not going to stop unless we open it up to see what's inside."

"How do you know I didn't set the alarm off tonight as an excuse to see you. I do look so hot in my ancient hair rollers. First you see me in that horrible get up Muldoons makes me wear, now we meet at 3 a.m. half dead. Oh no, I think we're done with the smoke alarm meetings. The next time you hear my smoke alarm, there really is a fire and you better come running to save me."

Vanessa always kept her tools under the kitchen sink, she really didn't know why, but she had paranoid delusions of a hammer falling off of the top shelf and smashing her head in. Speaking of hammers, "I found a hammer!" she held it up triumphantly. "Maybe we can just bash it to death." She dove back under the kitchen sink though and searched for a screwdriver, eventually coming up with one and handing it to Idris.

Idris couldn't help laughing at Vanessa's retorts, wondering if this was going to be another battle of flirty almost-but-not-quite pick up lines. After three-thirty a.m. was not naturally a time when his mind was working fast enough to hit on a pretty girl without a little bit of effort.

"The socks weren't half bad." It wasn't a remark made only to keep up the banter; Idris did prefer things to stay interesting, no matter how small the change might be. He really didn't see many ladies walking around in striped socks while at their place of work. "And sure I'll save you, granted I can get downstairs in time. Who knows, I might get distracted on the way down--"

He started as Vanessa raised a hammer into the air victoriously, excitedly declaring it a worthy find. In amusement he shook his head, smiling. "Not sure if that's the greatest idea. You do want me to hear it, right?" He said this as he took the screwdriver from her, using it to open the smoke detector. "This is much better. Hand me the batteries?" Idris put the screwdriver on the counter near his water bottle. Quickly he removed the dead batteries and silence instantly descended upon the apartment. It was a sheer, unadulterated relief.

"Well when stuck in a horrible uniform, a girl has to accessorize as much as she can to make herself feel better." She wore those socks almost every bar shift, they were an unofficial part of her uniform. Vanessa didn't want to laugh at that comment, but how could she not? She shook her head as she laughed. "You get distracted, I'll make damn sure that I come back as a ghost and haunt you until the day you die."

Oh thank GOD. She was so grateful to hear nothing, nothing except yet another hand me something demand. "The batteries are in the drawer right in front of you, can't miss them." Thank God the smoke alarm stopped, she wondered how many other people she had woken up, but she was too tired to feel bad.

"You'll have a helluva time haunting me, I bet. Probably use it as an excuse to follow me around, see what I'm getting up to during the day." Idris shot her a sly look before opening the kitchen drawer she spoke of, moving a few odds and ends around in order to get the batteries. Placing them in the correct order within the smoke detector, he replaced the cover, picking up the screwdriver one last time to tighten it.

"There. Problem solved, Vanessa. Say hello to a peaceful night's sleep." Idris stood on the foot stool again and made sure the smoke detector was properly replaced in its spot then stepped down, folding the stool for her. He looked up to admire his handiwork for a few moments, then turned his gaze to Vanessa. "Is there a specific place you want me to put this?" He picked up the foot stool and waited for her response, still reveling in the perfect quality of the silent apartment, save for their voices.

"Oh HA HA, very funny." Vanessa shook her head. This guy was just full of quirky comebacks, even at this late hour. Vanessa looked at the clock and grumbled. It was so very, very late.

"You can just leave it out here actually. There are a few cabinets I can't reach without it, and it's not in anyone's way. Thanks for helping me out Idris, I appreciate it, not that you had much choice. Don't be a stranger, but do be a stranger at this hour please." Vanessa smiled and was suddenly torn. Would a 3:30 ish quick kiss be weird? Probably. Would that stop her? Nope. She paused for only a moment or two, but leaned in to give him a quick kiss, it wasn't exactly a little peck on the lips, but it wasn't exactly a make-out fest. "Consider that payment for services rendered. Goodnight."

Idris leaned the footstool against one of the lower kitchen cupboards, grabbing his water bottle off the counter. He was intending on making the appropriate goodbyes and head back upstairs to get what little rest could be salvaged, knowing that he'd probably need an expresso in the morning; he didn't usually work until closing every night, but recently he'd been having to stay later hours due to not all of the newer staff being fully reliable. Closing and the such however wasn't an issue, but when he'd been kept awake until nearly 4 A.M. and gone to bed a couple hours later than usual, it was nothing short of a double whammy.

Suffice to say that his thoughts were heavily involved with how good his pillow would feel beneath his head. When Vanessa stopped talking and moved in for the kill, her lips met his in a surprising gesture of thanks and something else. Idris was no stranger to kissing, he rather enjoyed it as did an amazing amount of the human population. Still, there was something familiar that shocked his senses from the very moment she chose to plant the almost lingering kiss upon his mouth. There was nothing excessively sensual about the action, yet it hearkened to something deep within him that had nothing to do with the very basic beginnings of desire.

It was as strange as what he'd felt upon first speaking with her at Muldoon's, that vague notion of having already known her which hadn't left him alone the entire time they were together. This was the same, only made stronger by this new form of physical contact between the two of them. Idris subtly wet his lips after she pulled back to dismiss him. He wasn't entirely sure of what to think, deciding it was best to not focus on it right now. Sleep was much more important.

He smiled at her, pausing before taking his exit.

"Fair enough. Thanks for the water. I'll see you later." With that he left her apartment, shutting the front door behind him, leaving the locking of it up to her. Idris returned to his home, grateful that he'd get some sleep which would serve two purposes: the basic fundamentals of rest and a way to clear his mind of that odd feeling he'd received when Vanessa kissed him.

Which he hadn't minded, on second thought. Hadn't minded it at all.
