Broom in hand, Vanessa went to the front door and opened it quickly. When the door opened and Idris was on the other side she instantly became humiliated. Here she was in juvenile little yellow ducky pajama shorts that were entirely too short on her and white rag curlers, not exactly the height of fashion. She didn’t get embarrassed very easily, in fact she couldn’t remember the last time she had, but to be dressed like this, with no makeup to boot, in front of the guy you were trying to get to know better and possibly date, well, it was completely humiliating.
Barefooted, Vanessa ushered Idris in. She wanted to shout: ‘Good fucking God I forgot that you lived upstairs. It figures, it really does, it would be you and I would wake you up looking like this.’ However, exhausted she pointed the broom at the smoke alarm that was being stubborn. “Make it fucking stop. It’s stuck and now I’ve pissed it off!”
