Ministry Gala Event!
Characters: OPEN TO ALL. Please tag with your own character(s) when you comment/they arrive.
Setting: The Ministry Atrium, Level 8, beginning at 7 PM and running until midnight
Summary: It's the Halloween ministry gala/party! Come in costume (muggle or otherwise), in elegant wear, or in dress robes. The event begins at 7PM with refreshments, appetizers, finger foods and cocktails. Desserts are served later in the evening, but the cocktails remain available all night long. There is no full dinner, as it would be quite unwieldy with the amount of people expected to attend. The dance floor is open, a live band is playing, and the atmosphere is almost aggressively pleasant. For safety reasons, wands are being checked (surrendered) at the entrances. Unless your character is on-duty at the party, he or she will not have her wand on his/her person after entering.
Rating: Let's go with R for now, as there will be some dark occurrences later in the evening. We will update as necessary.

The event coordinators at the Ministry of Magic were in fine form in the hours leading up to the start of the gala. Everything had to be perfect, and not just in appearances. The atrium had been decorated in gold and silver, slightly reflective, to capture light and brighten the large, spacious room. The band was in place by 6:30, playing quiet music that set the mood. Off to either side, slightly out of the way, were two cocktail tables, fully stocked. There was also a number of wait staff who would be walking around with trays of red or white wine as well as champagne.

The attention to the decor was due to the head events coordinator, one Ismay Plimpton, who was an absolute perfectionist. With attention down to the very last detail, she was very nearly driving the Minister mad with her questions and comments, not to mention crucial changes. Her voice and general looks had Kingsley Shacklebolt nearly thinking her related to Delores Umbridge, if Ismay weren't so remarkably pleasant and likable.

With his assurance that everything was just fine, Ismay hurried off, gently but firmly reprimanding some poor chap setting candles afloat too low for her liking. The ceiling above twinkled like night stars, and between that, the candles, and the reflective decorations, the room was perfectly lit.

Everything was ready. All they needed now were the guests.

Cocktails are still available, as is the open bar. Another round of finger foods are served, more substantial this round.

Cho had chosen a dress that mixed the elegance of the wizarding world with the festive nature of the evening. She would have preferred to have worn her work clothes but had been instructed that she was to look the part as the Ministry didn't want security to be so overt that it caused the guests to focus on the events of the past few days. She hated wearing a ball gown. Cho had not dressed up for any event since attending the Yule Ball with Cedric. The memories of the preparation for that evening had mixed with her getting ready for this one and she had spent a good bit of time lamenting her loss.

Now she stood just out of the shadows near the entrance being used by the waitstaff. She kept track of their comings and goings while watching the nearby cocktail tables to ensure that no one was beginning to reach an unhealthy limit. Yes, it had only been an hour but that didn't mean there weren't some light weights in the crowd.

Melinda had strangely been looking forward to the Gala. At first she'd only been attending because her parents thought it would be good to make an appearance and cultivate a few connections, but the idea of dressing up for pleasure had appealed to her. Her costume was elegant and understated, nothing an actual vampire would likely take offense to, and though her parents had been a bit less than amused, they hadn't said a word against it.

After arriving with them and turning over her wand, Melinda quickly disappeared into the crowd to mingle and chat with acquaintances. After and hour or so, Melinda was desperate for a drink and made her way over to one of the cocktail tables to snag herself a glass of white wine. She was just raising it to her lips when she spotted a familiar face. "Cho? Is that you?"

Cho was parched but didn't dare pick up a drink from the table while on duty. Reaching out she tapped one of the waitstaff on the shoulder and requested a glass of ice water. A few moments later she had the glass in hand and was sipping on it when a familiar voice called her name.

"Melinda," she responded to the voice. "You look... dark this evening," she commented on her friend's simple but elegant dress. "Vampire?" she inquired of the look. If you were to say Cho had a look for the evening one might say black widow. That would have been more appropriate if the jewels had been charmed to glow red. Of course, she could always change that if she wanted since she was one of the few to have their wand in possession.

"I'll take that as a compliment," Melinda answered with a mild smile, flashing a bit of charmed fang to confirm that, yes, she was a vampire for the evening. "I haven't seen you in an age, Cho, how are you? You're looking lovely tonight." The dress Cho wore was very nice and Melinda wondered if she was on duty or not.

Cho had noticed that the attire for the evening ran the gamut. She also noted that the younger generation seemed more willing to wear items that were less traditional and more a mixture of cultures. Even some of those who seemed to hold more purist views were willing to blur the lines some this evening.

"Thank-you," she nodded. "You're outfit is rather lovely as well." She liked the way the red nail polish and lipstick highlighted the rest of the attire. As she spoke, Cho instinctively put her hand in her pocket to check that her wand was still easy to access in care of emergency and hadn’t slipped so as to get caught in the folds of the hidden pocket charmed into the side of the dress.

"Thank you. It took me longer that I expected to find just the right dress," Melinda admitted with a wry smile. She noticed Cho hadn't answered her question, and it made Melinda wonder if Cho simply hadn't heard or if she didn't want to answer the question at all. Melinda hoped it was the former. Melinda took a sip of her wine before venturing, "Really, Cho, how are you? Are you working tonight or are you actually here to enjoy the party?" Melinda couldn't remember the last time she'd seen Cho, let alone saw her dressed up.

Bianca was already a bit tired. She'd been here for an hour, and had taken a number of pictures already. The costumes were amazing, and she felt just a little, well, unspectacular in hers. She's rather be comfortable of course, but among the gowns she saw, her little ladybug costume seemed far less elegant. The red and black dress was cute, not sexy, and helped her to not stand out too much. Or so she thought.

Breathing a quiet sigh, Bianca squeezed her way off towards a corner where she could have some privacy. A glass of champagne in one hand, and her cameras set down, Bianca watched the dancers with a slightly wistful expression.

Justin had been enjoying the atmosphere - wonderful people in interesting outfits, excellent drinks and food... It was the perfect place to go to forget about the events of the week and just be. He'd been doing his fair share of mingling, as well as passing out a few leis in the hope of a few lays, but as always, his eyes strayed to the edges of the room, always attentive to the people that seemed to prefer to blend into the background. He didn't know why, but he'd always been drawn to them, wanting to bring them out of the shadows and into the light with the rest of the people in the room.

Not to mention that the quiet ones tended to be wild in the sack.

He spotted a pretty little ladybug in a corner and his interest was immediately piqued. He left his emptied wine glass on a nearby table and strode through the crowd, intent on his target. As he approached, he removed one of the leis from his neck and smiled widely.

"Excuse me," he flirted as he came within reaching distance. "Would you like a lei?"

Behind her little half-mask, her fake wings pressed against the wall, Bianca thought herself invisible. At least she'd hoped it. But somehow, she'd been spotted, actually picked out of the crowd and approached by...oh my, was that Justin?

Bianca blinked at him, too distracted by his costume to blush at the double meaning of his question. "Justin, what are you wearing?" Forgetting she still had her mask down, Bianca didn't realize Justin hadn't approached knowing exactly who she was.

His eyebrows rose at the mention of his name. The young woman's voice sounded somewhat familiar, but amid the noise of the room, he couldn't quite put his finger on who it might be. At the very least, it was someone who knew him. Had he slept with them already? Not that it mattered, as she was adorable and he certainly wouldn't mind doing so again, if that were the case...

He stepped forward and leaned in, his free hand lifting to press against the wall above her as the other hand dangled the lei before her eyes. "Just a hula outfit. It's a dance where they tell a story with their bodies... kind of poetic, when you think about it." He leered.

Bianca felt her face flame under her mask and she hope she was neither red as it or as her hair. Justin was quite close and that was making her a bit nervous. She slid sideways, just a bit out of his way, but unfortunately closer to the corner of the room. "Oh is it?" She asked the question a bit weakly, and then finished what was in her glass in a gulp.

Justin had a tendency to make her nervous like that. The things he often said and how close he stood - Bianca felt she was frequently flushed from embarrassment when he was near for long. She just couldn't help it.

Justin smirked, her moving reminding him of Jasper's earlier that evening. He lifted the lei and, single-handedly, slipped it over her head and around her neck. He then reached down for her hand and took a step back, tugging on her hand to follow.

"Come, we can dance, and tell a little story of our own."

Ernie and Hannah
[info]ernsthename
2011-10-28 03:09 am UTC (link)
Ernie arrived at the Gala feeling somewhat out of sorts and overwhelmed. He had taken some time off in the afternoon to have the spot checked, with their observations being inconclusive. He was to return if it wasn't resolved in a few days, which was a bit concerning to him. He then headed back to work to quickly check on the crew who were to be ready for calls from the streets. They seemed to be doing fine, and then he went to check up on those available in the Gala, which was also fine. After those two checks, he had returned home, took a quick shower, changed into his dark blue dress robes and apparated over, surrendering his wand at the door (he felt incredibly naked without it).

He wasn't as interested in costume that year, since he considered it a hinderance should anything happen and he needed to do something. (Ok, he knew he really wasn't supposed to do anything but enjoy himself, but his compulsion to work when he saw others working was rather strong.) And in any case, he didn't quite want to be perceived by those he worked with as juvenile--as they were all over the place.

Once he got there, at 20:00 hrs sharp, he went in and looked around for Hannah. He was a bit concerned at the reply owl she sent back...she obviously wasn't very pleased that he wasn't making it back to the apartment and would meet her at the Ministry. But in a way he needed to get a few things out of the way lest he continue to think about work the whole evening. He wondered and worried if she'd press him to talk about the dreams that evening, or whether they'd let it drop for now. He'd probably wait a few days for the spot to either clear up or so that it won't be linked to the dreams as some sort of omen, as his paranoid mind put it. Ok, so maybe somewhere, deep down he did take some of that divination stuff to heart. As much as he would deny it as a "sensible person", that sort of stuff did frighten him on occasion.

"I won't worry for the rest of this evening," Ernie said, not really convinced himself.

Hannah had spent the afternoon with Lavender getting ready for the evening. Among the girlishness of dresses, jewelry, shoes, and make-up the lightheartedness of the evening took over the darkness that had consumed their early morning hours. The argument of the afternoon had been Lavender's choice of shoes. While the heels had been gorgeous Hannah didn't think her friend would survive the night in five inch heels. Hannah herself couldn't stand heels at all so even the three inches Lavender had eventually settled for were more than she would have handled.

Hannah's dress for the evening wasn't necessarily what one would consider a costume. It had however been inspired by the idea of dressing like a bumblebee. For her to dress so formally was out of character enough that she felt like a princess and could assume the guise of being dressed up even though her dress was simply more towards the line of formal witch wear. She had even joked with Lavender about feeling like royalty, to which her friend had produced a tiara to top the outfit off.

Hannah had actually arrived a little before eight and found herself standing in line waiting to turn her wand over. She didn't think twice about it as such was proper protocol these days when so many were together in one place. As she took in the glamour of her surroundings Hannah promised herself that she would simply enjoy herself and Ernie's company. Talking things out with her friend had helped immensely. She would only push the issue if the nightmares happened again.

Now, she stood a bit away from the main entry point watching for Ernie's arrival. When he entered the room a little while later she couldn't help but smile at how handsome he looked. She lifted her hand a little and gave a small wave hoping he would notice her even if she was decked out more extravagantly than normal.

Ernie looked around for a moment before catching someone waving at him and realizing that it was Hannah who had been waiting for him. He had a bit of a double take when he was scanning the steadily growing crowd for Hannah. He saw Cho as he entered, and waved before continuing his search.

Upon noticing Hannah, Ernie gave a relieved smile that his delay didn't appear to put a damper on her mood. "You look beautiful," he said, as he approached her, slowing down to take in the sight, before giving her a peck on the lips in greeting. "I hope you weren't waiting for too long. It has been a rather busy day, what with ensuring that old witches and wizards aren't hexing muggle children and with this. How's been Lavender doing lately?"

Hannah was lucky Ernie wasn't around to see her roll her eyes. She watched as he headed across the room and noted how even after he'd spotted her he continued to focus on the room in general. She had to admit that as much as she wished Ernie's job didn't take so much of his time she couldn't help but admire his dedication.

When he arrived her smile brightened a little. "Thank-you," she had been feeling a bit overdressed after noticing that so many were dressed in more of a costume type fashion. "I've not been waiting long," she assured him as she reached out and placed her hand on his arm. "She's doing alright," her voice flattened a little as she spoke. She didn't want to talk about what she had learned today. There would be time for those discussions later.

Ernie typically did not notice intonations like the one Hannah just used, and therefore didn't continue to focus on this. "I don't think I've seen her in awhile," he commented. Besides Hannah, Justin and the folks he'd see at work, he hasn't really seen most folks from back in the day more recently (all due to his work schedule, of course).

"Did you want to have something to eat or drink?" he asked, noticing that the tables he had seen during set-up were now rather crowded around, but still piled high with finger foods. He was, admittedly rather hungry due to his being in a rush to leave work. It was quite fortunate that Justin whisked him off to lunch as he probably wouldn't have taken time to have a lunch to begin with. He was rather fortunate that Justin had shown up or else he probably would've never had his work done.

For once Hannah was relieved that Ernie didn't catch simple things like a change of voice. "Perhaps we can have a get together soon," Hannah liked that idea. It had been too long since several of her friends were in the same place at the same time.

Hannah had been looking around the room at all the wonderful decorations. The food looked delicious. She had thought to grab up a cucumber sandwich when a waiter walked past earlier with a tray. However, she knew that it was quite likely that Ern would be rather hungry seeing as he always skipped meals when he was focused on work. "The cucumber sandwich bites look absolutely divine," she stated as she thread her arm around his so he could either lead her toward the tables or to one of the several waiters walking around with trays in hand.

Tracey had been looking forward to the Gala at the Ministry. She was hoping to get a scoop on some story... even if it was something gossip related. Anything that was news worthy that she could bring to her editor. But what really made her want to go to the Gala, was to dress up in a costume.

Though Tracey wasn't overly familiar with Muggle culture, she did love the fashion. She was interested in some classic literature, so when she came across the Alice in Wonderland costume, she definitely wanted it. Her long blonde hair flowed down her back, accented with the black bow hand band. Her blue dress with apron was short, but her legs were covered with white tights. Her favourite part was the black and white Victorian inspired boots.

She came into the Gala, carrying a stuffed white rabbit toy, and checking behind her to make sure Theo was following her. It had taken a lot of convincing, but she managed to get her friend to come. Tracey didn't have a date tonight after all, and she was determined that Theo would part take in some normal social interaction.

Theodore was Tracey's victim this time, as per usual in such situations. He wasn't quite sure how he'd ever get her back in the matter, as he never really did feel the need to go to any events with anyone. Or any events, period.

Apparently taking friends to events one didn't feel like attending was what friends were for. He was also wearing a top hat with his simple charcoal grey dress robes. She said something about a "Mad Hatter", to which he protested to somewhat as she had just reassured him that he wasn't mad in the recent past (just hours before). Maybe it wasn't something she didn't want to tell him in a straightforward manner, he thought with a shrug before donning the hat.

Well, at least he didn't need to carry the rabbit, although he did offer to turn it into a real rabbit as stuffed rabbits weren't as much fun. "I guess this isn't so bad," he commented, trying to at least try to be receptive and accepting of his current situation. "Wouldn't it be rather difficult to get good stories if you can't even recognize half the people here?" He noticed that a number of people were wearing masks at this event, or were otherwise unrecognizable.

Theo was lucky that the only costume element Tracey made him wear was the top hat. She could have gone much worse, but since Theo had a hard week, she was going easy on him. He may not believe it, but it was true. Besides he did look good in his dress robes, and a top hat.

"Well maybe you can enjoy yourself tonight after all," Tracey said amuse when Theo admitted it wasn't so bad. She didn't mind the comment about finding a story being difficult. "That is only part of the reason why I'm here. I'm mostly here enjoy myself, and have a fun Halloween," Tracey said. "Besides, it only takes a little conversation to find out who everyone is."

Theodore knew, of course that she could've done worse, but when he was in a poor mood earlier that day because of a disruption in his sleep due tot he dreams. But due to this he could complain much more freely without her really taking offense.

He didn't really get why she enjoyed having those little conversations to find out who everyone was, but he knew that it was his own take on the world. "Do you know anyone else attending?" he asked, not really sure he was interested in meeting most who would come to these sorts of things, but trying to be sociable nonetheless. He eyed the crowd and vaguely recognized a few people from class a number of years ago already, and some former customers even. He had a rather good memory for faces as much as he had a good memory for facts.

Tracey looped her arm through Theo's so she could bring him along, and not let him sneak away. She would be lucky if she could keep Theo there for a couple of hours, but she would make sure he didn't leave a minute less than that.

"Well, I'm pretty sure Daphne is going to be here. And Adrian is working security," Tracey said thinking of those she knew on the top of her head attending.

Theodore was quite aware of the requirements of this activity, but that didn't mean that he'd at least try to stretch the rules at some point. He knew that it would be best and of importance to find Daphne at some point.

"Daphne's not coming in costume, is she?" He asked, trying to ascertain so that he can start the search. He hoped that she wouldn't be in a mask since that would make it near impossible to find her in the mass of costumes. Having an unsuccessful quick initial scan, he decided to make the best of it. "Did you want anything to eat or drink?" he asked, noticing that there were indeed tables and waiters amidst them.
