Ministry Gala Event!
Characters: OPEN TO ALL. Please tag with your own character(s) when you comment/they arrive.
Setting: The Ministry Atrium, Level 8, beginning at 7 PM and running until midnight
Summary: It's the Halloween ministry gala/party! Come in costume (muggle or otherwise), in elegant wear, or in dress robes. The event begins at 7PM with refreshments, appetizers, finger foods and cocktails. Desserts are served later in the evening, but the cocktails remain available all night long. There is no full dinner, as it would be quite unwieldy with the amount of people expected to attend. The dance floor is open, a live band is playing, and the atmosphere is almost aggressively pleasant. For safety reasons, wands are being checked (surrendered) at the entrances. Unless your character is on-duty at the party, he or she will not have her wand on his/her person after entering.
Rating: Let's go with R for now, as there will be some dark occurrences later in the evening. We will update as necessary.

The event coordinators at the Ministry of Magic were in fine form in the hours leading up to the start of the gala. Everything had to be perfect, and not just in appearances. The atrium had been decorated in gold and silver, slightly reflective, to capture light and brighten the large, spacious room. The band was in place by 6:30, playing quiet music that set the mood. Off to either side, slightly out of the way, were two cocktail tables, fully stocked. There was also a number of wait staff who would be walking around with trays of red or white wine as well as champagne.

The attention to the decor was due to the head events coordinator, one Ismay Plimpton, who was an absolute perfectionist. With attention down to the very last detail, she was very nearly driving the Minister mad with her questions and comments, not to mention crucial changes. Her voice and general looks had Kingsley Shacklebolt nearly thinking her related to Delores Umbridge, if Ismay weren't so remarkably pleasant and likable.

With his assurance that everything was just fine, Ismay hurried off, gently but firmly reprimanding some poor chap setting candles afloat too low for her liking. The ceiling above twinkled like night stars, and between that, the candles, and the reflective decorations, the room was perfectly lit.

Everything was ready. All they needed now were the guests.

"I'll take that as a compliment," Melinda answered with a mild smile, flashing a bit of charmed fang to confirm that, yes, she was a vampire for the evening. "I haven't seen you in an age, Cho, how are you? You're looking lovely tonight." The dress Cho wore was very nice and Melinda wondered if she was on duty or not.

Cho had noticed that the attire for the evening ran the gamut. She also noted that the younger generation seemed more willing to wear items that were less traditional and more a mixture of cultures. Even some of those who seemed to hold more purist views were willing to blur the lines some this evening.

"Thank-you," she nodded. "You're outfit is rather lovely as well." She liked the way the red nail polish and lipstick highlighted the rest of the attire. As she spoke, Cho instinctively put her hand in her pocket to check that her wand was still easy to access in care of emergency and hadn’t slipped so as to get caught in the folds of the hidden pocket charmed into the side of the dress.

"Thank you. It took me longer that I expected to find just the right dress," Melinda admitted with a wry smile. She noticed Cho hadn't answered her question, and it made Melinda wonder if Cho simply hadn't heard or if she didn't want to answer the question at all. Melinda hoped it was the former. Melinda took a sip of her wine before venturing, "Really, Cho, how are you? Are you working tonight or are you actually here to enjoy the party?" Melinda couldn't remember the last time she'd seen Cho, let alone saw her dressed up.

Seeing as her wand had indeed gotten caught up in the fabric of the fabric of the dress she pulled it out. The pocket quickly faded out of existence and anyone looking at the dress wouldn't have even realized there was a charmed piece of fabric designed to obscure her wand. The question asked earlier had not been verbally answered but had triggered Cho to make the check.

"This is the shift they gave me for today," she decided to hold her wand for a bit before placing it back in it's hiding spot. "I'd have much prefered to be on street duty this evening."

A little frown marred Melinda's face as she watched Cho fumble about with her dress for her moment until Cho finally produced a wand from somewhere. Well, that certainly answered Melinda's question about whether Cho was working or not, as Cho did herself a moment later.

"Ah," Melinda said, not quite sure what to say to that. Cho hadn't answered her other question again, and Melinda could only assume that she wasn't doing well at all and simply didn't want to talk about it. Seems not much had changed. "I suppose being out on the street would keep you a bit more occupied than just standing around and watching other people enjoy themselves."

In Cho's mind stating that she rather be on street patrol was an answer to how she was doing. She tried to avoid any questions that might end up causing her to become emotional as she was prone to do whenever Cedric crossed her mind.

"I'm glad people are enjoying themselves," she responded. "Makes it look like things are getting back to normal." She wasn't sure about the extent or the extreme of the dreams people had last night. She'd caught a bit of some conversations as she's walked around but mostly people seemed to be avoiding the subject. "Have you enjoyed your evening thus far?"

Melinda shrugged, surveying the crowd. "Normal? I suppose so. It was a bit odd for moment there but it was only a couple of nights." The talk of nightmares had dwindled during the day. It could only be a good sign, right?

"The evening's been lovely so far," Melinda said, a hint of mild surprise in her tone. "I hadn't expected the Ministry to pull off such a thing so tastefully, but they managed it. Now if only I could spend more of this evening focused on pleasure instead of business." There was a wry resignation in her voice then, but it passed quickly enough. She cast Cho an apologetic look. "Oh, should I be distracting you from work like this?"

Working for the Ministry Cho knew they had the ability to royally screw things up without even trying. Therefore, she could understand Melinda's surprise and gave a knowing nod. "Yes, they've actually succeeded in putting something together that was comfortable enough for the attendance of the general populace but glamorous enough for those of high importance and taste," she related her observation of the situation.

The entire time they'd talked, Cho's eyes had continually scanned the area beyond Melinda while intermittently catching her friend's eyes as well. "Melinda, you know I never see you as a distraction." Not an unwelcome one at least. Besides, she could do with some friendly conversation as watching couples had been nagging at the back of her mind. "In fact, conversing with you is far more useful than standing her like a sentry." After all they weren't supposed to look too obviously on duty.

"Indeed. I'd say they actually shot for highbrow rather than plebeian and landed somewhere in the middle," Melinda agreed. She took another drink before adding, "I think even the Prophet will be hard-pressed to find fault with anything for tomorrow's write-up."

Melinda wasn't sure if she was flattered or not to have Cho not consider her a distraction, but she smiled nontheless. "You're too kind, Cho. At least I can make myself useful." Though to be honest, that's all Melinda had been doing so far that night: making herself useful. It was tiring and just a bit frustrating.

Cho could find no fault with Melinda's assessment of the night. "True enough," she knew the Prophet liked to sensationalize things and as far as Cho had observed nothing worth too much undue attention had occurred thus far this evening. She hoped it remained that way.

As her eyes surveyed the room, Cho noticed an overbearing wizard ignoring the attempts of a young witch trying to escape his advances. "Excuse me," she said to her friend, "I think I've got a situation to intervene in." She was glad her wand was already out. Before walking completely away she turned to Melinda, "Perhaps we can get together soon and catch up."

Melinda followed Cho's gaze to the altercation that was happening, and she nodded in understanding. "Yes, it seems you've work to do. I'll leave you do it." Especially since it looked like it was about to get out of hand. "We'll have lunch. Just owl me and we'll make plans," she said with a genuine smile before Cho went off to do her job. It had been far too long. Melinda only hoped that they'd be able to talk without anything too unpleasant coming up. She'd just have to wait and see.
