Ministry Gala Event!
Characters: OPEN TO ALL. Please tag with your own character(s) when you comment/they arrive.
Setting: The Ministry Atrium, Level 8, beginning at 7 PM and running until midnight
Summary: It's the Halloween ministry gala/party! Come in costume (muggle or otherwise), in elegant wear, or in dress robes. The event begins at 7PM with refreshments, appetizers, finger foods and cocktails. Desserts are served later in the evening, but the cocktails remain available all night long. There is no full dinner, as it would be quite unwieldy with the amount of people expected to attend. The dance floor is open, a live band is playing, and the atmosphere is almost aggressively pleasant. For safety reasons, wands are being checked (surrendered) at the entrances. Unless your character is on-duty at the party, he or she will not have her wand on his/her person after entering.
Rating: Let's go with R for now, as there will be some dark occurrences later in the evening. We will update as necessary.

The event coordinators at the Ministry of Magic were in fine form in the hours leading up to the start of the gala. Everything had to be perfect, and not just in appearances. The atrium had been decorated in gold and silver, slightly reflective, to capture light and brighten the large, spacious room. The band was in place by 6:30, playing quiet music that set the mood. Off to either side, slightly out of the way, were two cocktail tables, fully stocked. There was also a number of wait staff who would be walking around with trays of red or white wine as well as champagne.

The attention to the decor was due to the head events coordinator, one Ismay Plimpton, who was an absolute perfectionist. With attention down to the very last detail, she was very nearly driving the Minister mad with her questions and comments, not to mention crucial changes. Her voice and general looks had Kingsley Shacklebolt nearly thinking her related to Delores Umbridge, if Ismay weren't so remarkably pleasant and likable.

With his assurance that everything was just fine, Ismay hurried off, gently but firmly reprimanding some poor chap setting candles afloat too low for her liking. The ceiling above twinkled like night stars, and between that, the candles, and the reflective decorations, the room was perfectly lit.

Everything was ready. All they needed now were the guests.

The phoenix-witch's admission actually surprised a brief, sharp smile to Cade's lips before his expression fell back into one of stony impassivity. "Should I be flattered or do you chat up random strangers all the time? For all you know, I could be hideous under this mask," he pointed out. It was a warning of sorts. Cade knew he wasn't anything remarkable to look at and best she know now on the off chance anything happened later.

When she asked his house, Cade weighed the merits of his response, but he figured if house rivalries was something else she hadn't grown out of, then no loss for him this ended here and now. "Slytherin," he said, pinning her with a look to gauge her reaction. There was just a hint of challenge to his voice, his chin tilted at a proud angle. "Still want that dance now?"

There'd been a smile, though brief and Angie pursed her lips as she stared only a little up towards this hard-to-read wizard. "Who says it can't be both?" Angie returned. "Chatting up strangers is a way to meet new people, but then, it's unlikely we're complete strangers, after all." At his next comment she merely smiled and replied, "For all you know, I could be as well."

His revelation surprised her, but then, given his gruff manner, she shouldn't have been too surprised. Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors, in her own opinion, had a tendency to be more friendly and outgoing, and she'd subconsciously ruled out both of those houses. Ravenclaw had still been a possibility until he ruled it out. Instead of making her less interested though, she lifted her chin. There was a note of challenge in his tone, and Angelina was singularly unable to resist a challenge. "Perhaps I do, but you're on duty, so where does that leave us?"

He was a Slytherin. It had taken five years for Angie to accept that her views towards Slytherin had been highly biased throughout her whole career. It was only seeing some of them come back to fighter against Voldemort, and learned all about Severus Snape, that taught her not all Slytherins were the same. It was still sinking it, to be fair. But this Slytherin here was in the ministry's employ, a Ministry that wasn't run by Death Eaters. What kind of person would she be to dismiss him because of his house?

"It's not exactly flattering to know I'm just one of any number of blokes who could catch your eye," Cade pointed out, voice dry. "You're correct, though. It's more than likely we know each other." Actually, the more he spoke with her, the more familiar she seemed. Cade dismissed her claim of possibly being unattractive under her mask with nothing more than a snort. The mask disguised who she was, but it didn't hide the lovely shape of her face.

Or her complexion, which was actually a very helpful clue, as was the Welsh accent coloring her words. The way she held herself and her choice of drink, pointed towards a woman comfortable in her own skin, but not particularly feminine. And she certainly wasn't afraid of a challenge, Cade saw. "That leaves us having this conversation, I imagine." His scanned over the crowd again, then returned to her when he didn't see anything to warrant attention. Seemingly out of nowhere, he asked, "Do you play quidditch?"

"Catching my eye might be easy. Keeping my attention is a bit more difficult; that's the real challenge." Now of course, Angie was trying to figure out who the Slytherin was. When he suddenly asked if she played quidditch, she cocked her head at him.

"DO I play quidditch? Like I breathe," she replied, knowing full well that that would make it that much easier to discern her own identity. It seemed a bit out of the blue, but then, maybe he was already closing in on figuring out who she was and that was why he'd asked. "Did you? In school?" Because if he had, they'd played against each other and that would make figuring him out a lot easier. Though she didn't exactly remember most Slytherin quidditch players with any real fondness. Fewer still were as attractive as this wizard's jawline suggested he was either. Sttil, things were starting to fall into place.

"You're requirements must be pretty low then if I've managed to hold your interest," Cade said, making no attempt at tact. "I'm hardly all that interesting." And definitely not any witch's first choice for conversation. In fact, any witch he'd spent much time with was for only one reason, and it certainly wasn't talking.

But for some reason this one was still talking to him. And now that she'd confirmed his suspicions, he wondered how much longer that would last when she found out who he was. "I did play in school, yes," he answered, meeting her gaze. "But I don't imagine you'd remember me, Johnson."

Angie wasn't really surprised when he guessed her identity with such conviction. She'd already let on that she was a Gryffindor, played Quidditch and her skin coloring wasn't at all hidden by her dress. "At the moment you're interesting enough, mostly because I'm still trying to figure out who-"

She cut herself off as she thought about it. She could rule out easily who he wasn't, and that helped narrow the field, so to speak. Logic wasn't her strongest suit but she thought she could employ some here. Or maybe it was wishful thinking that had her hoping the masked man was one of the few Slytherins who played fairly and thus was someone she didn't detest. She though if he was employed by the ministry - by a proper ministry - that he would at least be fair.

But it was actually that stubborn jaw jutting out beneath the mask that seemed familiar. That jaw and that hair. Then suddenly it clicked. It had only been one year, but Warrington had been a memorable player. Tough, talented, but fair. Slytherin had needed more players like him, though if they had, winning the cup would have been far more difficult. She wondered if he still had that sloth-like cast to his features, around that jaw that hadn't fit his face back then. "You don't give me enough credit Warrington," she replied, only about 85% sure that was actually him. She sounded confident enough though.

He'd surprised her, Cade could tell, but the satisfaction was short-lived as she surprised him right back, the expression flicking across his visible features before falling back into impassivity. Despite being on duty, Cade's focus was entirely on Angelina now, though. "It seemed I don't," he said after a moment. "What gave me away?" He'd definitely like to know, considering he was fairly certain only a handful of people alive should be able to recognize him right now.

Angie shrugged one shoulder again, the movement calling attention to her bare shoulders, and more. "Your hair hasn't changed at all and you've still got that surly disgruntled look you used to wear all the time. Whether or not the rest of you looks the same, well, I can't tell yet." Angie didn't really know Warrington well off the pitch - or at all really. In fact, she didn't even know what his first name was. All she knew was what he'd looked like, and his presence on the pitch.

"I know you only played the one year, but you played a good enough game that I remember you just fine." His attention seemed a bit more focused on her now, and Angie wondered what she'd said to garner that deeper interest. She was pretty sure she'd caught him by surprise as much as he had her though. That was somewhat satisfying.

Cade's eyes tracked the movement of her shoulder, the pull at the neckline of her dress, then trailed slowly upwards again. "I can assure you, the rest of be hasn't changed much at all either." Not that he thought, anyway. He hadn't had anyone tell him otherwise. "I suppose I should be flattered that you remember me." He sounded more vaguely amused than flattered, though. "I take it you still play like a hellion considering your current profession." It might have taken some prompting for him to remember Angelina Johnson, but he followed quidditch well enough to know who played for what team.

Angie finished off the last of her near-forgotten drink and set the empty glass down on the tray of a passing server. She considered his words and then added, "Well you're behind that mask so I'll have to take your word for it, won't I?" Merlin, had she had more to drink than she'd thought? She was actually still standing around talking to Warrington of all people, when there were plenty of her actual peers about.

Yet she didn't exactly want to leave. Perhaps it was the bit of mystery, or her challenging herself to actually hold a decent conversation with a former Slytherin...she wasn't sure what, but something kept her talking to him. "A hellion? I like that. I also like to think I've gotten better with age, like a good Scotch." She squinted at him behind her mask. "You knew I played professionally?" Yes she was famous but really only to the crowd who followed professional Quidditch, and knew the names of the Harpies players, really. At least she didn't think her supposed stardom went much beyond that.

Cade didn't huff out a breath at her skepticism, but he did roll his eyes before pushing his mask back to rest atop his head and gave her a look as if to say 'see? still the same'. It was better this way anyway; he had a better view of the crowd without his periphery being hampered.

It took more effort than he would have liked to admit to tear his gaze from Angelina long enough to do another sweep of the room. "Why am I not surprised you'd enjoy being compared to whiskey and an infernal creature?" The wry drawl was accompanied by a knowing look. "And I might not play any more, but I still follow quidditch. Especially the teams that practically play in my backyard."

Warrington pushed his mask back and Angie was grateful hers was still on. Perhaps then her wide-eyed gaping look might have gone a bit unnoticed. She only just managed to bite back an audible sound of appreciation, because Warrington by no means looked the same as he used to. She remembered that sloth-like cast to his features as though his face hadn't quite figured out how to form around that jaw of his. The jaw was still the same but the rest of his face had decided to surpass all expectation. Warrington was extremely attractive, and quite obviously blind.

"If you think you look the same as you did in school, Warrington, you're completely mad," Angie replied bluntly. She pushed her own mask up, once she'd gotten her expression under control. "And anyway whiskey packs a punch while hellish creatures don't let anything get in their way. Why wouldn't I mind that comparison? I'm a Harpy after all."

Then the last thing he said clicked. "You live in Wales? Where?"

It was Cade's turn to be skeptical at Angelina's assessment. "My eyes work just fine, thank you." He gave her a bold once over as if to prove just that. "And like I said, I'm not at all surprised you don't mind the comparison."

Her follow-up question caught him a little off guard - second time that night, even - but he managed to only arched a brow in question. "I do. Why do you want to know? Planning to pay me a visit, then?" If his tone was suspicious, it was out of habit more than anything.

Angie pursed her lips. "They may work fine when you're gawking at me, but certainly not when you're looking at yourself then," she argued. Angie probably could find a way to argue with a boulder and she was just difficult to move.

"I was curious. I hadn't known you lived in Wales. I don't play for the Harpies just because I like the idea of a women-only team. The Harpies are my mum's favorite team, and I was born and raised in Wales. It's nice to know someone else from the area." She smirked. "But if you want company you'd have to let me know where in Wales to find you. Tit for tat, Warrington. I'll tell you where I live if you want."

Cade exhaled through his nose, not unlike a bull might as he faced down a matador. "I don't gawk. I observe, I examine, and I stare, but I do not gawk like some slack-jawed idiot." His tone brooked no argument, his jaw as set and immobile as a mountain. "And pardon me if I trust my own eyes over those of someone who's been drinking."

He listened to her explain the reason behind her interest in where he lived with a stifled impatience. "Are you always this talkative or is it the alcohol?" he asked finally when she'd finished. "And I don't have company. Ever. But if you must know, I'm in Gwenydd."

His tone may have brooked no argument, but to Angie, that was merely a challenge. "You can call it what you like, but I'd still call it gawking. Though not to the extent of being a slack-jawed idiot," she amended. "At least, unlike others, you can still carry on a conversation when you're eyes to tits." The next comment though had her own jaw setting. "One or two drinks doesn't suddenly make me incapable of seeing properly, Warrington. Ever thought you're just so accustomed to your own face, you don't see what others do?"

She exhaled though the sound was exasperated and irritated. "I usually am this friendly. I can handle my liquor, though my sanity might be questionable. I've got to be mad to keep talking to you when you're this irritable. Or are you always this irritable?" She didn't comment further on where he lived. She knew the area of Gwenydd, but not extremely well. "If I'm bothering you, I could leave you alone to glower at the crowd and hope something else of interest happens." She was certain she could find someone else to talk to who was more personable.

"You can call it gawking all you like, but you'd be wrong," Cade ground out, the reign on his temper fragile after the last few weeks he'd had. He needed an outlet for it, but this wasn't the way. So he tried his best to keep himself in check, but Johnson wasn't making it easy. "It takes a lot more than a superior set of breasts to make me lose my focus. And no, the thought hasn't crossed my mind seeing as you're the first to say anything of the sort."

He snorted when she extolled her questionable virtues. "Hate to tell you, Johnson, but your idea of friendly misses the mark. But you're right. No one's making you talk to me. And yes, I am always this irritable. I'd sorry to disappoint, but I honestly don't give a rat's arse."

Her remark about glowering at the crowd made Cade realized he'd been so focused on their verbal sparring that he hadn't been scanning the throng of guests as he should have. It only served to deepen his scowl as he tore his gaze away from her to do just that. "Yes, perhaps you should go bother some other poor soul and leave me to do my job."

Angie's lip curled up. Well good to know she'd just wasted her time talking to an insufferable prat. She was irritated, though she didn't know whether more so at him for being so unbearable or herself for actually having the nerve to be somewhat flattered by him calling her breasts superior. That was a new one; they'd been called a lot of things, but not 'superior'.

"Well then in that case, excuse me while I find someone who actually knows how to carry on a conversation. Perhaps next time you wonder why you're having such a piss poor night, you'll think twice before you chase away someone trying to hold a decent conversation, yeah?" Angie's eyes hard gone dark with anger, and yet almost sparked with it at well. She was close to displaying a fine show of temper, and instead of doing so there in the ministry, she instead turned and left to get another drink. Maybe she'd hunt down Alicia or Melinda and fume, or better yet, find a nicer bloke to talk to.
