Ministry Gala Event!
Characters: OPEN TO ALL. Please tag with your own character(s) when you comment/they arrive.
Setting: The Ministry Atrium, Level 8, beginning at 7 PM and running until midnight
Summary: It's the Halloween ministry gala/party! Come in costume (muggle or otherwise), in elegant wear, or in dress robes. The event begins at 7PM with refreshments, appetizers, finger foods and cocktails. Desserts are served later in the evening, but the cocktails remain available all night long. There is no full dinner, as it would be quite unwieldy with the amount of people expected to attend. The dance floor is open, a live band is playing, and the atmosphere is almost aggressively pleasant. For safety reasons, wands are being checked (surrendered) at the entrances. Unless your character is on-duty at the party, he or she will not have her wand on his/her person after entering.
Rating: Let's go with R for now, as there will be some dark occurrences later in the evening. We will update as necessary.

The event coordinators at the Ministry of Magic were in fine form in the hours leading up to the start of the gala. Everything had to be perfect, and not just in appearances. The atrium had been decorated in gold and silver, slightly reflective, to capture light and brighten the large, spacious room. The band was in place by 6:30, playing quiet music that set the mood. Off to either side, slightly out of the way, were two cocktail tables, fully stocked. There was also a number of wait staff who would be walking around with trays of red or white wine as well as champagne.

The attention to the decor was due to the head events coordinator, one Ismay Plimpton, who was an absolute perfectionist. With attention down to the very last detail, she was very nearly driving the Minister mad with her questions and comments, not to mention crucial changes. Her voice and general looks had Kingsley Shacklebolt nearly thinking her related to Delores Umbridge, if Ismay weren't so remarkably pleasant and likable.

With his assurance that everything was just fine, Ismay hurried off, gently but firmly reprimanding some poor chap setting candles afloat too low for her liking. The ceiling above twinkled like night stars, and between that, the candles, and the reflective decorations, the room was perfectly lit.

Everything was ready. All they needed now were the guests.

Alicia made her way into the Atrium, thankful she'd decided to wear something warmer as she was pants at warming charms. She adjusted her bow tie and smiled at the people she passed on her way to the drinks table.

She immediately grabbed a glass of wine, intent on enjoying herself tonight despite the strangeness of the last couple of nights. She was never one to let such things get her down, no matter how they shook her - though perhaps it was owed more to her capabilities of denial than anything else.

Hermione had not planned on coming to the gala. However in light of recent events and Harry's concern, she couldn't keep herself away. Hermione had come to learn that observing and interacting with others could often give as much insight into a situation as any academic text.

Dressed in one of the gowns she had offered to Luna Hermione entered the Ministry and after surrendering her wand she made her way to the primary gathering point for the Ministry's guests. Turning, she took a glass of wine from nearby tray and noticed that another hand took a glass at the same time.

"Alicia, how are you this evening," she greeted her former housemate.

Luna felt mostly refreshed after a nap that afternoon, Luna dressed in the gown Hermione had offered. It was an empire waisted knee length white chiffon number with beaded bodice and straps. Chiffon loops fell over her upper arms, adding to the ethereal effect. It really was a stunning dress, she admitted, and despite the white making her look more pale, Luna liked the effect. She'd decided to leave her hair down for the event, cascading in waves down her back. The only color on her person was the mask she'd fashioned from a pair of spectrespecs. In light of the occasion, she'd added strands of beads along the under side of the lenses that shimmered and changed color alternately between the pink and blue of her lenses. Above, she set white feathers in a soft cresting wave across the span of the glasses. The smudge on her left hand hadn't come off, but Luna had never let anything like dirt or bruises or whatever might be on her person to hold her back.

She smiled brightly at the witch checking her wand and bounced into the Atrium. Seeing the appetizers, she realized she hadn't exactly eaten dinner and took a few bites before turning to look for punch.

Harry actually had the night off and so he was attending the gala as a guest. However, he was still on alert. After his conversations earlier that day, he couldn't help it. He had actually been surprised when they asked him to surrender his wand as well, but he realised they couldn't hold him to a different standard to the other guests.

So feeling a bit naked without his wand, despite his muggle police officer costume, Harry stepped inside and scanned the room looking for familiar faces. He spied one almost immediately. He wove his way through the crowd to say hello to Luna, glad he found someone right away to distract him from his concern about the evening. "Luna, you look brilliant. That's a very nice dress on you," he added.

Unlike some people, Dean had slept well the previous night, as had Seamus. In fact the day was mostly uneventful, which suited him just fine after the day he'd had yesterday. He was at work today, but out early enough to come home, dress very quickly and easily into his toga - deep purple, draped over white - and a faux laurel wreath. Seamus was dressing similarly, and the ease of the costume meant they took little tile to get read.

Dean wasn't exactly fond of having to surrender his wand, but there was no helping it. Dean was bound and determined to have a good time. With Seamus on his arm, and cocktails and appetizers available, he was rather looking forward to the occasion. Once inside the Atrium, Dean looked down at Seamus. "Shall I start us with something to drink?"

Today had been pretty much business as usual for Seamus, for which he was grateful for. One night of horrifying nightmares had been more than enough, and though he felt bad that some people - some of his friends even! - were still having bad dreams, he was just glad he could get on with his life and look forward to the Gala.

He'd been smart enough to ask for the night off early in the month, so instead of heading into his shift at the Leaky, Seamus headed home after getting off work to meet up with Dean and get ready for the night. Dressed in a simple toga and sandals, it hadn't taken long - well, distractions aside - and soon enough they were in the thick of the Gala. Seamus felt a little naked without his wand, but it was easy enough to forget about for a little while surrounded by music and people and the glitz of the decorations. And Dean, of course.

Seamus's fingers paused their absent drumming at the small of Dean's back at the question, and Seamus grinned up at him. "You're reading my mind again. Nothing too strong just yet."

It had taken the combined effort of herself and her friends to get Angie properly attired for this party, but when all was said and done, she liked the overall effect. The red dress wasn't one she'd have chosen herself, and so it was a good thing she'd had help. It showed more of her cleavage than she'd have liked, but she couldn't argue that it was a gorgeous dress and exactly what she'd intended with this phoenix costume.

She wore a red and black mask - only a small half-mask, one that obscured her features just enough - with a small spray of feathers. But the noticeable scar that ran down the back of her right arm was perfectly visible; she never hid it. She wore a gold feather cuff on her left arm, and had even donned a ring on her right ring finger, something she was very unused to doing. She arrived at 7:30, clearly not on time, but not so late that she missed out on much. She surrendered her wand - with a grumble - and went for the cocktails. She shunned the wine and champagne, however, and instead had a glass of scotch whiskey in her hand as she surveyed the room. She'd have to track down the girls at some point, but for now, she was just getting a feel for the crowd.

And speaking of the crowd, it didn't take long to pick out some of the better costumes. Notably, there was a gladiator nearby, one very it and with wild curly hair and a stony expression beneath his mask that seemed to suit the costume well. Seemed like this gala was off to the right start already. Angie curved her lips into a smile.

Cade was hard-pressed to think of anywhere he wanted to be less. Parties weren't his thing at the best of times, but to be reduced to working security for a glorified fancy dress party chaffed Cade's temper immensely. But he always did his duty, and he did it well. And at the very least he got to keep his wand.

It was tucked in the belt in his side - next to his sword. It blade wasn't just part of his costume, but it was a weapon he'd use only as a last resort. Not that he'd need it. Cade was bored out of his skull as people laughed and chatted around him. He was every vigilant, though, eyes scanning the crowd from behind his mask. They paused briefly on a tall woman in a fitting red dress, but moved on quickly enough to a wizard who already looked a bit too into his cups.

Cho had chosen a dress that mixed the elegance of the wizarding world with the festive nature of the evening. She would have preferred to have worn her work clothes but had been instructed that she was to look the part as the Ministry didn't want security to be so overt that it caused the guests to focus on the events of the past few days. She hated wearing a ball gown. Cho had not dressed up for any event since attending the Yule Ball with Cedric. The memories of the preparation for that evening had mixed with her getting ready for this one and she had spent a good bit of time lamenting her loss.

Now she stood just out of the shadows near the entrance being used by the waitstaff. She kept track of their comings and goings while watching the nearby cocktail tables to ensure that no one was beginning to reach an unhealthy limit. Yes, it had only been an hour but that didn't mean there weren't some light weights in the crowd.

Melinda had strangely been looking forward to the Gala. At first she'd only been attending because her parents thought it would be good to make an appearance and cultivate a few connections, but the idea of dressing up for pleasure had appealed to her. Her costume was elegant and understated, nothing an actual vampire would likely take offense to, and though her parents had been a bit less than amused, they hadn't said a word against it.

After arriving with them and turning over her wand, Melinda quickly disappeared into the crowd to mingle and chat with acquaintances. After and hour or so, Melinda was desperate for a drink and made her way over to one of the cocktail tables to snag herself a glass of white wine. She was just raising it to her lips when she spotted a familiar face. "Cho? Is that you?"

Bianca was already a bit tired. She'd been here for an hour, and had taken a number of pictures already. The costumes were amazing, and she felt just a little, well, unspectacular in hers. She's rather be comfortable of course, but among the gowns she saw, her little ladybug costume seemed far less elegant. The red and black dress was cute, not sexy, and helped her to not stand out too much. Or so she thought.

Breathing a quiet sigh, Bianca squeezed her way off towards a corner where she could have some privacy. A glass of champagne in one hand, and her cameras set down, Bianca watched the dancers with a slightly wistful expression.

Ernie arrived at the Gala feeling somewhat out of sorts and overwhelmed. He had taken some time off in the afternoon to have the spot checked, with their observations being inconclusive. He was to return if it wasn't resolved in a few days, which was a bit concerning to him. He then headed back to work to quickly check on the crew who were to be ready for calls from the streets. They seemed to be doing fine, and then he went to check up on those available in the Gala, which was also fine. After those two checks, he had returned home, took a quick shower, changed into his dark blue dress robes and apparated over, surrendering his wand at the door (he felt incredibly naked without it).

He wasn't as interested in costume that year, since he considered it a hinderance should anything happen and he needed to do something. (Ok, he knew he really wasn't supposed to do anything but enjoy himself, but his compulsion to work when he saw others working was rather strong.) And in any case, he didn't quite want to be perceived by those he worked with as juvenile--as they were all over the place.

Once he got there, at 20:00 hrs sharp, he went in and looked around for Hannah. He was a bit concerned at the reply owl she sent back...she obviously wasn't very pleased that he wasn't making it back to the apartment and would meet her at the Ministry. But in a way he needed to get a few things out of the way lest he continue to think about work the whole evening. He wondered and worried if she'd press him to talk about the dreams that evening, or whether they'd let it drop for now. He'd probably wait a few days for the spot to either clear up or so that it won't be linked to the dreams as some sort of omen, as his paranoid mind put it. Ok, so maybe somewhere, deep down he did take some of that divination stuff to heart. As much as he would deny it as a "sensible person", that sort of stuff did frighten him on occasion.

"I won't worry for the rest of this evening," Ernie said, not really convinced himself.

Tracey had been looking forward to the Gala at the Ministry. She was hoping to get a scoop on some story... even if it was something gossip related. Anything that was news worthy that she could bring to her editor. But what really made her want to go to the Gala, was to dress up in a costume.

Though Tracey wasn't overly familiar with Muggle culture, she did love the fashion. She was interested in some classic literature, so when she came across the Alice in Wonderland costume, she definitely wanted it. Her long blonde hair flowed down her back, accented with the black bow hand band. Her blue dress with apron was short, but her legs were covered with white tights. Her favourite part was the black and white Victorian inspired boots.

She came into the Gala, carrying a stuffed white rabbit toy, and checking behind her to make sure Theo was following her. It had taken a lot of convincing, but she managed to get her friend to come. Tracey didn't have a date tonight after all, and she was determined that Theo would part take in some normal social interaction.

After Lavender had seen Hannah meet up with Ernie, watching them for a little while to make sure she wouldn't have to intervene, she slipped into the crowds of people. Even with the slightly less brilliant shoes, she was feeling good. For the first time in a long time, she felt pretty. Of course that came with a considerable amount of planning and a rather elegant mask with feathers that obscured the left side of her face. Tonight, dressed in a simple dark blue dress and her favorite accessories, she could be normal.

Well, as normal as could be spending far too much of the past hour talking about the quality of the deserts with a few other woman at the table. Although for the record, she totally could have produced a far better product. Not that she was biased. She finished off her second glass of wine and excused herself to go in search of another.

Not that she needed it exactly, but maybe after one more drink she would stop looking longingly at the dancing floor and actually find someone to dance with. Sure, Dean had promised her a dance earlier, but he and Seamus had looked rather happy together earlier and she really didn't want to intrude. "I mean there has to be someone here to dance with."

Percy had spend the night schmoozing as the politician he was at heart, greeting witches and wizards and making certain they were having a good time. He had begun feeling rather self-conscious about his formal robes (dark blue velour with silver embroidery at the hems and collar, with scattered stars sparkling like diamonds), as he'd been complimented by more than a few older celebrants commenting on how nice it was to see the older styles coming back into fashion.

But now the crowd had gravitated toward the dance floor en masse, and he felt a sense of relief at no longer having to make his dutiful rounds. He watched as people began pairing up to dance, feeling somewhat wistful at not having a companion of his own. His mind flickered briefly to that morning's unusual beginning with Daphne, but he shook it away quickly, intent on enjoying the evening.

Hermione made her way around the room, stopping every so often to talk to one her boss's contacts. She also took the time to converse with any members of the Wizengamot in an effort too feel them out for the upcoming parole hearings. At least this evening most people were to busy focusing on themselves. This meant that Hermione didn't have to worry about fielding too many questions about her time in those eight months.

When the current song ended, she released herself from the arms of an elderly wizard who had just recently been widowed. The stories he'd told her about his wife had been simply beautiful. The way his eyes shined when he spoke of her had made Hermione think about Ron. She had seen him earlier in the evening and it had made her realize how much she missed him. It was funny, she didn't even remember what it was they had fought about.

Justin has spent the night having fun, going around from person to person and handing out leis with as many variants on the 'Would you like to get lei'd?' line as possible. He of course meant every single one of them, but he always said them in such a way that people could roll their eyes and fob it off as a joke if they weren't interested. He was glad, however, at his choice in outfit - the grass skirt, no shirt, and straw hat and leis - as the more people entered the Atrium, the warmer it got.

He'd had so much fun that he eventually realized he hadn't even sought out his best mates yet. It didn't take long, however, particularly with Hannah's gorgeous Hufflepuff-coloured gown. He made his way through the crowd and approached them from behind, then suddenly slung an arm over each of their shoulders and hugged them to him.

"I've been having a wonderful time!" he said, the few drinks he'd had beginning to show in his voice. "How's yours been?"

After a few dances with Tracey he slipped away when she was catching up with other friends. Despite his typically apathetic and non-committal demeanor, he did care about her in the way he could. He listened, and was quite contented that she wouldn't often pry since she was rather busy airing her concerns. He was quite happy with that.

It was his plan to take a short round about the gala and then head home prior to the end of the event. This really wasn't his sort of thing, but it was interesting to see observe people in different costumes, doing what people do. He was one to engage in people-watching on a regular basis. Just since it added variety to his day in the ways books seemed to lack. He needed to get to sleep too. He readjusted his hat for a moment, still feeling at least somewhat indignant that Tracey would ask him to dress as a madman.

Harry was tired, no doubt about that. He hadn't had much to drink in the alcoholic sense, but lack of proper sleep two nights in a row meant he was drained. He should probably have left hours ago, but it was nice seeing friends and not having that pall of worry hanging over him for a while. He'd been concerned about the gala, that something might happen maybe. He couldn't put a finger on the dread, but felt it strongly all the same.

However, now the night was drawing to a close, he thought maybe he hadn't had to worry at all. He stepped away from the crowd, not actually leaving the ministry, just going out to be apart from everyone else. He still had to go and retrieve his wand from security before he could leave, but for now he just needed a breath of air away from everyone. After all these years, Harry still sometimes felt the need to be alone with his thoughts.

He still didn't have any clue exactly what a Paris Hilton was, other than apparently slutty and willing to have it in the back and really anything beyond that simply didn't matter. Zacharias Smith sure as hell wasn't looking for a wife and this would certainly count as turning the night around. There might not have been some big drama happening to keep his interest, but this would do. Smirk on his face, he made his way through the slowly thinning crowds to the back of the hall.

His slutty muggle had told him to meet her in five minutes. It had been about seven, so she would be waiting for him. Or at least she would have been, had she not been distracted by one of friends pulling her aside for a moment - not that Zacharias Smith was aware of the delay. As he slipped out into the corridor by the emergency exit, he was near shuddering with anticipation.

All that came crashing do a halt.

"What the fuck?" His stomach dropped, as he took a step forward, shoes sticking to the...blood on the floor. And some sad looking bloke collapsed on the floor. "Potter, not really a joke in good taste here." It was easier to believe this wasn't real, because it was just absurd. He just wanted a blow job!

Without his wand he was a bit useless, but he knew how to check for a pulse and then Potter and all of his little friends were never going to hear the end of this bullshit. Pranks were one thing but this wasn't even funny. Crouching down next to the body he reached out, only now it looked far too real to be fake, and there was just blood everywhere. (Thank Merlin he had a relatively strong constitution.) Zacharias pulled his mask. It was just in the way now. Reaching over what looked like a neck wound he felt around for a pulse.

Behind him was a feminine shriek, scaring the wits out of him, causing him to topple backward onto his bottom into the pile of blood.

And that would be his slutty muggle.
