Catching up
Characters: Adrian & Kinjal
Setting: 11 AM - brunch at Ciao Trattoria in Diagon Alley
Summary: Adrian takes an old friend out to lunch
Rating: Worksafe

It had been far too long since Adrian had had a day off. He'd had to see his mother the night before and it left him riddled with irritation heavily mixed with guilt. She was still suffering from nightmares and their conversation were growing more and more unpleasant. She insisted he wasn't working hard enough to solve the problem, and that he should be focusing more on how to get her well. He'd left, barely keeping his temper and gone home, just so he didn't have to spend more time with her.

Of course he'd suspected she'd have another nightmare that night, which was why the guilt was still eating at him. If only she wasn't so damned unpleasant, selfish, and unbearable, she'd have his support and concern. As it was, he barely ever wanted to be near her. But he'd pushed all that from his mind in light of today. He had a brunch meeting with Kinjal, and a date planned for later, with Melinda.

He dressed both well and for the weather, Apparating over to Diagon Alley, to Ciao Trattoria where he'd intended to meet Kinjal. After arriving early, he spoke to the host, greased the manager's palm and got a rather nice table. He sat down and waited for her to arrive.

Despite her late hours, Kinjal was a typically early riser. There wasn't really a reason to it -- it just was. And considering that last night's sleep had involved yet another nightmare, it had only aided her at getting up at a time she wasn't even quite sure counted as being part of the morning.

She's been doing a very good job of not actually letting the fact that every other night was plagued by the insanity bleed into her everyday life. After all, what good would it do her in the long run. She was mostly confident she would find herself a solution in the long run, after all.

But at the moment, she was due to meet Adrian for a bit of brunch and she was looking forward to both the meal and the company. She arrived at the restaurant they were due to meet, dressed... close to a way she was sure would've actually met her mother's approval, even if her entire family liked to pretend she lost all etiquette knowledge she'd learned as a child.

After being pointed in the right direction by the host, Kinjal made her way over to where Adrian was already seated. "Nice table," she said with a slight grin instead of the more standard sort of greeting.

Adrian didn't have to wait long. He expected Kinjal to be punctual - sometimes you couldn't shake good breeding, whether or not you tried - and he wasn't disappointed. He stood as she was pointed in his direction and remained standing. He smiled at her greeting. "It was early enough that I didn't have to fight for a table, so I just, ah, asked for a nicer one that we'd have otherwise gotten" Adrian replied.

He realized it had been far too long since he'd seen Kinjal, properly anyway. there was that time when he'd recognised her at the Honeypot, which was a bit surprising for him. He rarely went, but even so he'd certainly not expected to actually recognise one of the dancers as someone he knew and relatively well. "Please, sit," he gestured to the chair across from his and didn't sit until she did. "How have you been?"

Other than Agatha and Samara, Kinjal hadn't really be in the practise of actually telling people where she worked. Certainly not out of personal shame, of course, but just as she didn't find it much of a necessary bit of information to offer unless asked; people tended to behave weirdly about it. Despite the lack of shame, though, she'd been... anxious in how Adrian would react when he found out, and when he hadn't called her a slag - her cousin was still feeling Kinjal's fist for that one, everything was right with the world.

"Nice tables definitely add to the dining experience, even if it's not with anyone you need to impress," Kinjal said easily, taking her seat across from him. "I've been rather well, actually, though I think that has more to do with not having seen a blood relative in weeks. Work is work and not very complicated, after all. Nothing much changes there." And that was also only if not taking into account the nightmares, which she didn't. "And yourself?"

The server came over to take their drinks orders and politely inform them of the specials of the day. Adrian waited patiently, ordered his drink and waited for Kinjal to do the same. He asked for some more time to decide on the meal though and then turned his attention back to her.

"Ah, yes. Work. Well at least it's not complicated. I could use a bit on not complicated at work myself." Adrian chuckled softly. "Not seeing blood relatives is probably a very good recipe for mental health. I wish I'd managed to avoid my own on a more regular basis. It's good to see you though."

Kinjal was leaning towards the breakfast side of things and ordered appropriately for that, letting the conversation resume once the server had left them alone again.

She smiled just slightly. Calling her job uncomplicated, considering what it was that she did would never fail to be amusing any day of the week. "Well, that's what being needing to be NEWT-qualified does for you, I'd say," she replied teasingly. "In my specific case, it's a very mutual desire for avoidance, I suspect. But it's good to see you, too."

Adrian decided on his meal when the waiter came back with drinks and ordered then. He steepled his fingers and smiled back at Kinjal. He hoped she hadn't taken any silent offense to him calling her job uncomplicated, but as one who merely saw talented dancing women, he didn't expect the job to be very taxing. Few people knew what another person's job was truly like until the did it, but considering how stressful and complicated his own had been since Halloween, it was hard to see through anyone else's eyes at the moment.

He snorted. "That's what trying to solve the murder of a hero as well as a string on likely related unsolved killings does to you," he replied." He was careful about what he said - he wasn't about to admit anything that hadn't already been covered by papers and released in various DMLE statements. "It's my first day off in almost ten days. I needed it."

His expression became a bit more serious. "How have you been? I mean really. You're not one of the ones suffering from these nightmares are you?" It was getting to be almost a normal things these days to discover someone else having nightmares. Many people had come forward to the ministry, but Adrian certainly wasn't aware of every person on that list, nor did he presume to think everyone has spoken up.

"See? The idea of working ten days straight - never mind that I love my job in all its easiness, would still drive me around the bend." Kinjal replied as she took a sip of her drink. Thank Merlin she'd learned years ago that she was not cut out for anything involving either paperwork or a desk or she'd currently be miserable.

"I've been fine, honestly. And, really, Adrian? How likely do you think I am to give an answer either way on that?" she asked extremely calmly, her voice perfectly nonchalant and an eyebrow raised in curiosity. "Even with you." Even with people she considered close enough to refer to as friends, she couldn't admit to the nightmares. It was a weakness, and that meant it could be used against her before this was all over. Of course, she knew well enough that Adrian was more honourable, taking into account his current profession, but that didn't change her mind much.

"Some days I enjoy my job, but not on days when I get left with more questions than answers and pressure from nearly everyone to solve it yesterday certainly isn't helping," Adrian replied with a shrug of his shoulder. He sipped his drink, calling the server back over for a strong cup of coffee as well.

He gave her a level look. "I know you well enough to recognise your more evasive answers, certainly," he responded. He wasn't the sort to press though, not a friend anyway. She didn't want to discuss the nightmares, he wouldn't discuss them. But he suspected that meant either she or someone very close to her was indeed suffering from them. It just made him concerned, considering how most everyone considered them a harbinger these days.

"Tell me something you would like to discuss then? Have you made any conquests lately, preferably ones that will further upset your family?" His lips curved in a slight smile.

"That's people for you. Always looking for someone to blame." Kinjal was sure that, considering all the success the woman supposedly behind this - as the Prophet had been saying - was having, she was probably a very capable witch. It didn't make the situation any better, however, but it was a thought. It was likely why the DMLE had yet to catch her.

Her expression didn't change much, as she knew that despite his words, Adrian wasn't about to press the topic. Even if he had, Kinjal would have been well prepared to lie realistically about her feelings on the entire matter. She supposed the fact that she had yet to see if any of her family members were suffering spoke a lot on how she felt about the entire lot.

Which made his question all the more amusing. "Well, I do have a set meeting later on with one Roger Davies, but I don't think that will do much in the way of upsetting my family. Not unless it includes indecent exposure in public." She put on a thoughtful look then, adding, "Perhaps I should look into women," before grinning.

"Of course. Most people rarely thing logically as it is. Add in something that causes fear and panic and that last bit of rationality jumps out of the window. Someone points fingers and the rest suffer a mob mentality and follow suit. It makes the entire mess difficult for the ones actually trying to get something done."

It didn't help that this witch had been clever so far, but she'd made a few mistakes: leaving people who could identify her alive. There were no clear names yet - besides this Pandora business - but it wouldn't be long before someone who knew her name recognised her face.

Adrian's coffee arrived surprisingly quickly and he declined both cream and sugar, preferring it black. He gave Kinjal another amused look at the mention of Roger Davies. "Well that could very easily end in what both of you might consider a conquest," Adrian replied, and then choked on a laugh when she added that last bit.

"Your family would have a collective apoplexy. I'd almost suggest convincing them that was what was happening. Merlin knows I'd more that once wondered whether pretending something similar would push my mother over the final edge," he added with a wry smile.

"And I can honestly that I do not envy you in the slightest for having to battle that regularly."

Kinjal was fully hoping that should she have the unfortunate opportunity to come face to face with the murdering woman, she'd be able to get herself out of a dead ending such as it would be. Not that she would want to offend Adrian, but she wasn't absolutely sure of how quickly they would resolve the case.

She gave a slight shrug and smirked a bit, though it was once more a grin with his laugh. "I'm counting on it to be, actually," she replied as far as Roger was concerned. "Sometimes, I'm curious as to where they muster up the energy to be so scandalised every time I do something they don't like - hive mind that they are. But, to be honest, even if I did decide to delve into a bit of sapphic love, I wouldn't really have to pretend very much." She'd let him come to his own conclusions as to what she meant by that.

Adrian chuckled as their food was brought out. "I wouldn't envy me were I you." He let the conversation regarding the unpleasantness fall by the wayside, and sipped his coffee. "Meanwhile I consider myself lucky I have only my mother's constant disappointment in me hanging over my head, and not the outrage of the rest of the family." Adrian had no siblings and he wasn't at all close to his extended family. The Yaxleys did not much factor into his life and he meant to keep it that way.

"As for the energy they muster, I expect they get it from the energy they would otherwise expend being productive members of society. If they're not doing that, they certainly have plenty of time to tell us everything we're doing wrong." Adrian turned his attention to his food and began eating.

"You really should as I find that that would be something to feel incredibly lucky about," Kinjal replied with a smile. Most of the time, she did let her feelings regarding her family get to her, but their collective absence from the everyday of her life helped when there didn't happen to be a new development to worry about. "Well at least in comparison to what it could be like," she added after a moment's pause.

Kin took a sip of her drink. "Truer words. Of course, I'd suspect that in their eyes, they are absolutely productive members of society and we're the ones lacking." She sat back in her seat. "And you know in my case at least, I'm well aware of that and love it deeply."

Adrian didn't realize how hungry he was until he began eating. Perhaps going so long at work skipping meals to follow leads and make headway in these cases. His most recent tactic, same as most, was trying to determine the identity of the woman in the sketch going around the ministry. The sketch was being released to the public as well, and Adrian at least, felt certain that someone would have to recognise this woman sooner or later.

He took another drink of coffee and shook his head. "How these people consider laying about while touting that simply being who they are makes them better than anyone else being productive to society will never cease to amaze me," he responded. Many of his cousins didn't work and those that did simply did as their parents wished. Adrian was one of few that struck out with what he considered the proper kind of ambition for one in Slytherin to have had. It was one of the reasons he respected Kinjal, despite what some might consider a less-than-respectable occupation. She had chosen it. She was doing something. That alone was respectable, in his opinion.

"Did you know that my mother thinks we urge each other on to defy our families? She let that slip to me during our last conversation. It's partly what made me realise I'd been remiss in catching up with you."

Kinjal took serene bites of her food as Adrian spoke. The further the conversation drifted towards paths she was well used to - complaining about her relatives being at the top of the list, the more she relaxed in her seat.

"It's incredibly amazing," she agreed. She didn't think much of her job beyond the fact that she enjoyed it; the fact that it had the added bonus of "angering" her family... or "embarrassing" them as they so claimed only made it so much sweeter. And there was a part of her that was certain she'd have chosen it and kept at it even if she didn't like it so much just because of the fact that her parents hated it so much. "The obvious hypocritical thought process behind it all."

She couldn't help raising and eyebrow at that, the slightest laugh escaping that was half amusement, half disbelief. "So glad your mother could be of help, though I'm sure that was the last thing she'd have wanted her statement to cause. As it is, I can't decide what makes that idea more amusing; that our mothers likely sit and discus the psychology behind our decisions in disappointing them regularly, or the assumption that we could ever be bothered to actually put so much thought as to discuss or plan such a thing."

"I think what amuses me the most is the fact that they are completely incapable of understanding why we do anything we do, and so they expect it's only for the sake of defiance. I'll admit knowing how my mother will react to something is often an added bonus, but it certainly isn't the driving force behind all of my choices." He sipped at his coffee, wrapping long fingers around the cup.

"Sometimes I do wonder how some of us managed to be nothing like our parents while others are simply replicas of them. I shudder to think that it's merely intelligence that did it, for it shouldn't take much in the way of thought to become one's own person. To think that there are that many people unable and unwilling to think for themselves...well, it's an unpleasant thought at best."

"Well of course," Kinjal replied, the sardonic tone in her voice at full force. "Merlin forbid our lives revolve around ourselves and not them." Privately - and, likely with Adrian as well considering he was already well aware of what her family was like - she could more than admit that her parents happened to get under her skin in ways that she wasn't exactly fond of and also tended to irritate her regularly. For all the reasons they spoke on and more.

"On my part, I think I'll attribute it to pure stubbornness." She also highly doubted that with all her beliefs that even if she hadn't begun rebelling at fifteen she'd have kept being what her parents wanted for much longer than that, anyway.

Adrian snorted into his coffee as a response. "To that end, I think a good topic change is in order. Have you taken any holidays this year? It's quite amazing that the year's so near its close already. It seems we only just celebrated the new year a month or two ago and yet here were are, already halfway through November."

He finished what he was eating and steepled his fingers as he spoke. "As for me I doubt I can take a holiday before Christmas this year." He shrugged one shoulder. He was used to it and didn't mind so much. "So I hope I can live a bit vicariously through you then."

It was probably a very good idea to make a change of topic. Kinjal was well aware of the fact that if there was one thing to get under her skin with the least amount of effort, it was definitely her family.

"I haven't since the season changed, but either way I'm still satisfied with the last trip for now." Kinjal grinned. "As fun as something with culture can be, I will always prefer the warm, sunny places with scantily clad people all around for days on end." And considering that every holiday she took was always the same, if not in the location but in that it offered her lovely beaches and lovely people on those beaches, that was the absolute truth. "Though I was thinking on skiving off the Bhatia family dinner next month in exchange for five days of fun and sun -- and I'll be ever so glad to owl you with all the sordid details if you need me to."
