Characters: All invited guests
Setting: The Chambers Home, Newport, Wales; Friday night (anywhere from 5pm onwards)
Rating: Probably in the PG-13 range
Summary: To celebrate a birthday/a dead mother/and a plan!

If this party had been simply a party then it might have been cancelled. However, when it came to the Chambers family nothing was simple because where was the fun in that? Not to mention as a basic practice there wasn't anything especially exciting or worth celebrating with birthdays. They always happened, marking a simple passage of time. However, if social norms dictated they be celebrated, then why not make actual use of them?

Of course then it had to be more complicated at the last minute, didn't it? Zacharias Smith had found it fit to gift them with a house elf yesterday who he didn't trust even as Taffy went on about the Griffiths family. And then there was the nanny who he didn't quite like the sight of, but he would deal with that if he needed to. Then there was the minor detail that Cecelia had been murdered adding another variable to the evening. At the first two had actually proven useful in helping to set up for the dinner, the nanny keeping Jason entertained and Taffy cleaning and preparing the meal.

Not that any of that mattered. No, this whole evening was engineered with the sole intent of finding the appropriate test subject. Surely, there were ethics against that sort of thing, but Eli was generally under the impression that ethics were created to protect men who were too afraid to take the leap and do what had to be done.

Tonight what had to be done involved abusing a friendship he had since Hogwarts, but it was not without cause. Eli needed to know how this worked, he needed as much data as possible on the magic being used around Pandora's memories if ever hoped to not only create a working theory, but actually find application. Glancing at the clock in his study, he saw it was quickly approaching five o'clock and he needed to be finished before then in case anyone had the audacity to arrive early.

So, he put away his work, carefully transferring his recreated Pandora memory into a vial and onto his person for later use before reestablishing the wards on this room to ensure it remained out of bounds. It wouldn't do to have people messing with his things - although then there would be another reason to have to kill them and he was going to have to talk to Samara about that idea - although perhaps later. Right now, he needed to switch into something more like a personable mode so he could get through the niceties and actually have the space needed for the real work.

The invitations asked that no one arrive earlier than 5 p.m.. Although in all honesty arriving anytime before 6 p.m. would be considered early and might not be taken too kindly depending on who answered the door.

Eli & Samara, 4:55 pm

Eli closed the door to his study in search of his wife. He hadn't so much as lost her, as he simply stopped keeping track of where she was. With the guests potentially arriving at any point now, he just wanted to double check to make sure they were still on plan for the evening.

His feet carried him down to their bedroom most likely out of habit more than anything else. Still, he was quite pleased at the sight he saw standing in the open doorway. An open smile fell across his face. Okay, so birthdays not really worth celebrating as a general thing, but seeing Samara all dressed up? Totally something worth creating reasons to celebrate.

"Now, I feel simply under dressed," he said crossing into the room. Eli wasn't wearing anything fancy, although he supposed if he was supposed to change into something more appropriate Samara would tell him. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders from the back, pressing a kiss on her cheek as he did so. "Which is to say that you look absolutely lovely and I wish we had the time so I could make you have to get dressed all over again."

Samara didn't have any real reason to dress up, but it felt nice to do so anyway. And wearing black was not exactly a mourning choice as much as a style choice, but she supposed that people might consider something of the sort regardless. She still was not sure what she was feeling on the matter so it was better to go along with what they wanted than to try to figure it out for herself. She didn't particularly want to disappoint Benji either, not that he was going to be terribly sad himself; they both had an odd relationship with their parents which might explain why they were close with one another despite their personality differences.

Samara bent her head back to look up at her husband from her perch on the chair in front of her vanity mirror where she was still trying to get her hair to curl loosely down her shoulders. She generally didn't do this because it never stuck well, but it was worth a shot for the night, even with the frustration. She had not had to prepare much for the party since they had Taffy to cook so she had splurged a bit. "I'd take you up on that offer if you had come in about five minutes ago. Unfortunately it takes me that long just to get in and out of this dress...properly at least," she added, considering how they sometimes did things. "Thank you though. I thought I'd give it a try since it's supposed to be a party for me and all."

"Remind me to steal a time turner next time I'm at work and then we'll never have to worry about time at all." Of course it wasn't that easy to just pop in and take one, but he had been considering that as an option lately. It would be a decent way to be able to go back in time and actually see what Pandroa was doing to the people she murdered and even to see through whom she was acting. However, right now it was more a playful way for him to see his wife naked.

"But I suppose we'll have to save it for later, when there actually is something to celebrate." He was excited about what the night would hold. Seeing new experiments through was always something special. Of course he would have to contain some of that energy. "And I do think that everything is in place." He reached into his pocket to pull out the small vial with the memory floating around in side. It looked so small, but had taken quite a good deal of work to get just right - or at least as close to the real thing as he could manage.

"Mmm, that sounds like a lovely idea," she cooed, knowing that it was not a feasible idea but it was fun to think about. All the wonderful things they would be able to accomplish with it, but life didn't work quite that way.

Samara could feel the energy pulsing off of him - his excitement was apparent about what the night held for them. When he pulled out the vial with the memory she held up her hand for it, though she didn't really need to hold it for any particular reason, it just felt like something she wanted to do. There was no way for her to really compare it to the memory inside her head, but somehow she knew that it was as close as they were going to get. Her husband wasn't the type to do anything halfway so this certainly was the best fabrication they could come up with. "Who should receive this, love?" She asked, considering the vial in her hand.

Aggie's day had brought to mind the expression 'Be careful what you wish for...' She'd longed for more excitement, pined for the days when she had chased after Death Eaters, and her 'prayers' had been answered with the escape of the magical world's most infamous werewolf, and her being assigned the case. She'd been all over wizarding Britain, from Azkaban to Hogsmeade, from the Ministry to visiting with a couple of survivors who had lived to tell the tale of their encounters with Fenrir Greyback. It was mostly a fact-gathering mission, as she had little doubt Greyback would eventually return to his favourite hunting grounds in the Forbidden Forest. She didn't know if any of his old pack remained, and that was something she would have to keep searching for if she were to ever track him down.

In all honesty, a party was the last thing she wanted to attend on a day like this, but it was for Samara, whom Aggie had neglected far too much of late and who needed as many friends as possible after her mother's death. She'd quickly returned home and sped through her closet, finding something suitable and rushing out without even caring to put on makeup. Her father was likely turning in his grave.

She was surprised to be greeted at the door by a house elf - since when did Samara and Eli get one? - and allowed herself to be let in. She hated to come empty-handed, but Samara's gift was still being held at Twilfitt & Tattings as Aggie'd been overly busy the last three days and had been unable to go fetch it during store hours. She handed her cloak to the elf and walked where he indicated the party would take place.

Astoria had arrived right behind Agatha, but hadn't been able to identify her as she approached the house. It had been a while since she'd been in the Chamber's home, she always felt a bit uncomfortable in their home, even when Eli wasn't around. She wasn't exactly sure why, but it was probably largely in part of her not being a "proper" Pureblood as many of the rest of them seemed to think. Still, Samara was family, and she would of course be there for her in her time of trouble. And celebration... it was really going to be a strange party, she thought.

After being let in and having her coat taken, she stepped into the room and finally recognized Agatha, though she didn't know her perfectly, she had seen her and spoken with her before since their departments worked together. She smoothed out her dress, which served the purpose of being classy enough for this kind of get together, and yet in the appropriate colors for mourning. "Ms. Bole," Astoria said as she stepped closer to her. "It's so nice to see you again."

Aggie smiled at the young woman who approached her. "Miss Greengrass, it's nice to see you as well. I didn't know you knew Samara and Eli."

She looked down as the house elf came by with a tray of wine glasses, taking one and sipping it carefully. She was still recovering from the last few days and didn't want to risk going loopy from the drink and making a fool out of herself. If she was going to do that, she preferred being sober for it.

Astoria smiled at her as she took a glass as well, taking a quick sip, before responding to her. "Yes, Samara is actually a cousin of mine, she's ever so good to me," Astoria smiled again.

"You look very nice tonight, Ms. Bole," Astoria said. She may not be dressed to the nines, but Astoria liked her outfit. She kind of wanted the jacket, to be honest.

Agatha & Kinjal

Honestly, Kinjal wished she could say that her day had been very interesting. She'd woken up half-past noon as had been the usual for her days, though she'd been shocked to read about Samara's mother's death in the paper. Not that she'd considered not attending before, but especially with that piece of news, she felt her presence was especially required as Samara was a close friend of hers. Thanks to her job being mostly of the nocturnal sort - and that reminded her that she actually had to go to work after this, Kin had had the luxury of taking her time picking out what she felt like wearing for the dinner. She had to admit that it had taken her a little longer to find something that wasn't too much. Personally, Kinjal thought that covering up the tattoo plenty counted as being conservative enough - or maybe that was the effect of her job bleeding into her personal life.

All in all, getting ready had only taken her a little more than a half hour and she decided that she had made very good time as she hadn't at all intended to be early. She took her time arriving at the house, and only raised her eyebrow slightly at there being a house elf. Once she was let in, had handed over her cloak and guided to the room where the party would be starting, she spotted Agatha and made her way over to the other woman.

But first, she was going to get herself a drink and she took that minor detour before returning her attention to approaching Agatha, smiling warmly.

Aggie smiled, glad to see a friendly face. She opened her arms for a small hug as Kinjal approached.

"Kin, it's been too long. You lot need to let me know when I've been neglecting you too much. You know how I get caught up in my work."

She eyed her friend up and down, nodding in approval. "You're looking well, as always."

Kinjal returned the hug without the least bit of hesitation, easily taking a place across from the other woman, though she waved her off.

"I haven't felt terribly neglected. I know how time-consuming work can be sometimes. Though, in your case I think it has a bit more importance to the general public." Of course, Kinjal didn't think there was anything wrong with her job in the least bit, but she could be objective enough to recognise that an Auror was a bit more important than a stripper in the scheme of things.

Kinjal smiled then, "Thanks. So are you." Which was a lot truth and a bit small talk all wrapped up into one.

Roger had arrived at the Chamber's house later than he attended, but he figured no one would mind. Dinner wasn't supposed to start till seven, and there was more of a stress on not being early to the party, so Roger figured he was safe.

He had been finishing up some work back at the Auror office, before going home to get changed so that had held him up. He really didn't know what to expect from the evening, after the tragedy they faced this week. But Eli was one of his best mates, and Samara became one of his friends as well, so Roger would be there for them.

He arrived at their home, and Roger was taken by surprise that a house elf let him in, and showed Roger where the rest of the party guests were. Since when did they have one of those? Strange things always seemed to happen in the Chambers' home.

Kinjal had found, as she waited, that there wasn't much mingling for her to do. Sure, the other guests were people to know, but other than Agatha, she wouldn't exactly consider them people she'd willingly walk up to for a conversation. She was here as a friend of Samara's, after all. So, instead, she'd had a couple of drinks and waited.

Roger's arrival, then, was a bit of a relief as it signaled that there was another person she could actually talk to and not feel guarded. Decidedly, then, she set aside her empty glass and made her way over to him. There was a hint of a smile on her face, but nothing overt. "Hey, stranger."

"How are you? It's been ages," Roger said, though that was mostly his own fault because of work. When she came up to him, he leaned in to kiss her cheek.

Samara was out and about now, holding a glass of wine and showing off her dress that was probably far too formal for the occasion but she didn't particularly mind. Many of her friends were already here and her brother was around somewhere, probably hitting on her mates which made her cringe at the thought. The last thing she needed was Agatha or Kinjal dating Benji; not that either Slytherin woman would probably be able to put up with him.

Jason was running around here somewhere, but between the nanny and Taffy he was being looked after and she didn't particularly mind him popping in and out of the party to say hello. He was well mannered enough when he wanted to be. Now she just needed to find someone to mingle with and all would be as it should be at her "birthday" celebration.

Theodore had spent a good amount of time at first just standing in a corner with Tracey, one of the few people he actually felt comfortable with (as any socially awkward person would). Normally it would happen that Tracey would be the more social person and he would just stick by her, but this time it was an odd reversal of roles.

He was typically was one who often warmed up quite slowly to new acquaintances. There were very few exceptions--seeing and interacting with mothers and their children were one of those examples. He wasn't quite sure whether it was something he wanted, or something he missed--or a mixture of both.

He didn't notice the location of the child yet, but kept an eye out for him nonetheless.

"Good evening and happy birthday, Samara," he said in greeting, as he approached the birthday girl. "This is my good friend, Miss Tracey Davis."

Normally Tracey was the social butterfly, but since her brother... since the trouble she'd been in last week, she hadn't felt like socializing much. Tracey had tried to go back to her flat, but she found in the night she couldn't be alone, so she went back to Bristol to be with Theo.

She seemed to be picking up Theodore's anti-social tendencies now. When he told her about the party, at the last minute she might add, she was surprised and almost said no. But she was trying to pretend to be human at least, so she put on a dress, combed her hair and put on some make up.

She didn't mind hanging out in the corner with Theodore, as she nursed a glass of wine and waited for dinner to start. But Theodore decided it was time to venture out, and she followed when he went to speak to the birthday girl.

"Happy birthday. Thank you for allowing me to attend with Theodore," Tracey said with a small smile that was genuine enough.

So far things were going well. Dinner had gone without incident, although Jason had decided to make an appearance with that sort of look on his face that had Eli think his son was up to something. Not that is came as too much of a surprise, Jason was a Chambers and they were always something. It was just concerning coming from a five year old and not knowing exactly what he was up to. Or if Eli would have to deal with the nanny later.

Beyond that, Eli had enjoyed watching the guests mix and mingle with each other, mentally taking all sorts of notes of who was speaking with who and bits of conversations that he overheard. Who knew when any of that might come in use - after he did have a few experiments in mind. After the dinner table had been cleared, Eli led the charge back into the other room so that Taffy could get ready for dessert. With a drink in hand he was making small talk as was expected of a host for the evening.

After a while he made his way back over to Roger. "How are you finding yourself?" he asked. it was Eli's away to ask if Roger had found anyone who caught his interest in the sort where there might be plans later.

Roger was always amused to see what little Jason Chambers was up too while he was running around the house. He could see that he was growing up to be just like his parents. It was funny to watch how Eli tried to deal with it too.

He'd been having a good time, catching up with his friends, despite the calm tone of the evening. Work kept him so busy and anti-social, so Roger soaked up at social interaction he could get. And of course he'd enjoyed the dinner and was looking forward to dessert.

Roger grinned as he looking at Eli when he came up to speak with him. "Quite well, thanks," he said with a grin as he took a sip of wine. He did catch Eli's hint. There maybe a possibility for plans after the party, but Roger would just have to wait and see.

"I'm glad to hear it," he said. He was approaching a complicated procedure - really, the only question was how much to let Roger know? After all, Roger had somewhat willing agreed to be his volunteer before, but that was child's play. This while not exactly the most complicated of what he wanted to do was an important step. There was also that horrible moral issue that Roger was his friend and quite smart at that, so he had to be able to give him something without giving away everything. (And really he didn't want to get accused of foul play this early in the game, that would just be sloppy.)

"Do you think I could borrow you for a moment? I know this is supposed be a social, work free evening, but you know me." His voice carried just a pinch of that carefree humor. It was funny that Eli never left his work behind because his brain never stopped turning. "I had something I needed a second opinion on."
