Who: Justin & Eli
What: More library fun - this time, satisfying an adolescent curiosity
Where: Hogwarts Library
When: November 13, 9:30 AM
Rating: PGish (just some language, no sex for once!)

Justin had felt bad about not doing much more research for Anthony due to the invasion, so much so that he returned to Hogwarts to beg Madame Pince to let him use the library. She'd given him a roll of the eyes - apparently, she hadn't forgotten that time she'd caught him and Colin having a gorgeous snog in the Astronomy section - and had waved him in with a warning not to take any books out of the library.

He'd made good use of his time, looking up several books and, upon discovering something of interest, performed a copying charm to take the information down on some blank paper he'd brought with him. He was on his way to return one of the books and get another when his eyes caught sight of the Restricted Section.

Ever since first year, he'd wondered what exactly was contained within that small area. Some thought there were manuals on the dark arts, others that there was some sort of other powerful knowledge that had to be kept under wraps. Justin, however, had always believed there to be some sort of wizard equivalent to the kama sutra that was hidden well within those shelves.

Unlike when he was younger, he was an adult now, and there was nothing keeping him from entering the Restricted Section. With a wicked grin, and completely forgetting about the book he'd been about to retrieve, he detoured to his new destination.

The scent of old, dust-covered books made him sneeze and he was immediately tempted to leave, but he kept on, the thought of the prize he might find being an excellent incentive. He started at the nearest shelf and trailed a finger along the book spines, browsing over titles to see if he could find something that would pique his interest.

Although the things had never made it to level nine (well, except for the one he brought down there) and were mostly contained from what he heard, he wasn't any in any hurry to head back to the Ministry. Not to mention a bit of outside research could actually help his professional and personal projects. The only complication was that the book he wanted was in the Hogwarts library, which meant having to go through somewhat more official channels there. Although the upside was that there probably wouldn't be any things roaming the hallways.

No, today, all the students had to worry about was a scruffy looking man with a certain look in his eye that could scare even the Slytherin or Gryffindor younger students because there was something just not right about him.

At least now that he was an adult and an unspeakable, Madame Pince couldn't do anything more than glare at him as he walked into her library and right for the restricted section. That part was a total victory for the younger version of himself. That victory was only slightly sullied by the fact that there was another man.

He cleared his throat. "Is there something particular you are looking for?" Eli was looking for something specific and the man was right in front of the section he wanted to look through.

Justin jumped at the voice behind him as he'd been completely focused on looking over the books. "Merlin, scare a bloke to death, why don't you."

The man standing behind him could definitely be described as 'creepy', but Justin didn't let it bother him. He'd shagged far creepier.

"Yeah, I'm looking to see if there's some kind of book on wizard sex practices or something. Bonus if I can find something on alerting or warning charms for a project a friend's working on. And no, the two aren't related." He smirked. "I didn't know Madame Pince had hired any help. How long have you been working here?"

"I prefer Eli actually and scaring a man to death is far too tedious," he said with a slight grin. As loath as he was to use his given first name, he did sometimes take amusement in hearing others invoke the other great wizard with a similar sounding name. And that Merlin was probably a far better man than Eli cared to be.

"And if I did work here, I would be not so kindly escorting you out, so perhaps it's better for us that I don't." Eli cross his arms over his chest with his left hand out on top. "More so, you're not going to find books about wizard sex practices, and any warning charms you find in here are going to be well over your skill level."

Justin tilted his head, confused by what the man said. He hadn't even realized he'd said Merlin, as even after so many years in the wizarding world, he still rarely spoke the expression consciously. And tedious? What the bloody hell was he on about? Justin simply chose to shake his head and not dwell on it - working on the research for Anthony was taking up far too many brain cells as it was.

He was disappointed at the claim to lack of erotic literature, but took umbrage at the jab at his intellect, or lack thereof. "Hey, I'm not a student anymore, and I've as much right to be in here as you do. That being said, I've a friend who's brilliant and he's the one I'm doing research for. We're trying to make up some sort of alerting system for our Muggle relatives who are having nightmares, so if whoever's going around killing people goes after them, they can call for help."

Eli didn't stop smirking as the man defended his right to be here, really just proving that he didn't have any right mucking around in this section. It might have been restricted to students, but just because they were older, he didn't think most people had right to be in this section. Perhaps a lesser man would have explained that he was an unspeakable and therefore allowed to pretty much wherever he wanted.

Instead Eli just stood there staring him down as he continued his little spiel. Now that was interesting. Muggle relatives having nightmares. Once was surely an outlier, but more than one - enough for this man to attempt research. "You're still in way over your head here and it's far more complicated magic than you need if you're dealing with muggles." Of course there was some legal issues with that was well, but those didn't bother him too much.

Justin let out a sigh of frustration. "As I said, I'm helping a friend who can do complicated magic. Just because I'm not brilliant doesn't mean you have to be rude about it. And by the way, you're not the first person in the last week who's thought they were better than me and felt the need to point out how useless I am. Honestly, you should really come up with a new shtick because it's getting old."

As if to prove that he wasn't so incompetent, he grabbed a book off the shelf and opened it to the table of contents. It was some thing about memories or what not. Not very interesting."

"And people say I have an ego," he muttered to himself before plucking the book from Justin's hands. Eli glanced down at the title, it might even be something that could help him, but he could come back for it later. He didn't need an audience for that.

"Come on, let me show you what you need." Eli pushed the man toward the entrance of the restricted section. The man needed to be in the ancient ruins section, that was how Eli based most of his alert wards on, along with he and Samara's communication protocol. "And it has nothing to do with being brilliant, it's about function. So, do you want to save your muggle friends or do you want to prove quite fruitlessly that you and your friend are on my level?"

As Justin was pushed, he looked back over his shoulder longingly, still secretly convinced there was some sort of book of sex spells hidden away there, but since the bloke seemed willing to actually help, Jusin couldn't refuse.

"It's not just friends, it's my Mum," he corrected, and the way he said it spoke of exactly how close he was to her, and how much he loved her. He'd do anything for her. "So yes, I'll take whatever help you can give us."

Mothers. Oddly that of all things could actually make something of an emotional appeal to him. Eli had been close to his mother, had embraced his Welsh heritage - her Welsh heritage - so tightly because of her. Losing her had hurt and while he didn't know this person, he could hear the care there. Eli also thought he could hear that sort of desperation to get help.

"Do you and your friend have any idea as to why your mother or the others have been affected?" He still hadn't returned his memories of his experiments to the proper place in his head, but he had reviewed his findings on the similarities and differences of a magic and muggle brain. It was all about nuances really.

And okay, maybe, he was just a little bit interested to see if this man had any sense at all. At the very least, Eli would need something to entertain himself as he located the book the man would need from the stacks.

He shook his head helplessly. "I wish I knew, but I don't. But she and my brother have the nightmares, and the spots. I only just found out because I didn't think it would affect them, but then the Prophet talked about Clearwater and her Muggle brother..."

He shrugged again, slipping his hands into his trouser pockets. "It would be one thing if it were just wizards, but another entirely. I wonder if-" His eyes bugged out as a thought crossed his mind. "I wonder if lots of Muggles are affected, or... just those related to magical people. I can't believe I never thought to ask that before. I should check on the internet - maybe someone's created a Yahoo!Group or a Greatestjournal Community or something!"

While Eli wasn't completely ignorant of muggle things, his knowledge of what muggles did was limited largely to their work in the sciences and traditionally the medical or biological. So, he didn't really understand what a Yahoo!Group was or if muggles also had some journal system that they decided to dub great. "That might be be pushing the statue a bit too far."

Eli couldn't imagine why random muggles would be affected. The logical answer would be that those exposed to magic could be susceptible to the nightmare-memories. Maybe it was some sort of ripple effect like the Clearwaters. "Do either you or your friend have the the nightmares and the spots?"

He wasn't really expecting much of use, the man didn't even think to ask the right sort of questions. Not that he was surprised, few people processed at his level. Scanning the ancient runes stacks, he finally found the book he was looking for.

"No, it should be fine to just search and see if there's a group out there of Muggles who've been showing symptoms. If I find some and want to know if they're related to wizards, I can just ask subtle questions, like if they've ever heard of a Hufflepuff, or if they've family they aren't really supposed to talk about. I can be subtle when I want to be," he added with a grin.

"Thank god, I don't, but my friend does. So does my best mate, who's pureblood."

They were in a part of the library that Justin didn't really think he'd ever been before, unless it had been for an illicit snog, or to proposition someone. He spotted the word 'runes' on one of the books he passed and shuddered. He'd never even wanted to think about taking that class.

Even without a name, Eli was trying to put the pieces together based on his best assumptions - muggleborn, Hufflepuff, probably not too much older or younger than him. It wasn't really the most pressing thing on hand, but he could follow many threads of thought at once. If anything it worked better that way.

Except he didn't like that - the lack of a pattern with the muggles involved. Even if it was a small sample lacking full details, he would have liked for it to be a bit more obvious. He would really like to get his hands on one of the muggles who were inflicted, compare to to the wizards. Eli could learn something there.

"There are a number of people inflicted with this issue," he aid flipping through the book to search for the chapter. "Why not leave it to the authorities to solve? Or even to protect the muggles? They did seek out wizards and witches involved."

Justin opened his mouth to reply, but quickly shut it, realizing that anything he had to say might hint to the DA's involvement which was a big no-no. Instead, he stuck to the one thing that had seemed to get through to the bloke.

"If it were your Mum and brother, would you leave it just to the authorities, or would you do everything in your power to help them?"

"Maybe I am the authorities," he said rather than actually answering the question. Eli never would leave the fate of anything in the hands of the Ministry, certainly not the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. And to some extent his actions could consider him the authorities, he might not be out in the field, but he could help figure things out for those people.

"And I don't have any mother or brother to compromise me emotionally." Even with Samara having nightmares too, Eli wasn't any less rational than he would be otherwise.

"Well, if you're the authorities, you know you're not seers, so if someone's in trouble and can't call you, there's no way for you to get to them. Even if we can come up with something like a sneakoscope to at least warn of danger before it's too late, that'll make all the difference in the world. And at least we'll have tried."

He snorted at the comment about being compromised. "You obviously don't know me, or else you'd know I'm always compromised by my emotions. I don't call it being compromised, though - I call it being human. My emotions are who I am, so I own them - that way they don't own me. Most of the time, anyway."

He looked meaningfully at the book the bloke had been fingering through. "So, is there something useful in there?"

That sort of comment just made Eli want to do all sorts of tests on this man. Constantly compromised by emotion - the things he would be able to observe or tinker with. It wasn't exactly the sort of thing you could ask a person, let alone a complete stranger. Well, at least not without the commitment to go through with it and right now it was just a passing thought.

"That all depends on you now, doesn't it?" He handed the book to the man, not immediately giving any sort of explanation. The page was filled with all sorts of runic spells that could be combined in a way to create a sort of messaging system that when applied correctly could be as discrete or as conspicuous as the user wanted. More importantly once the runes were cast, it didn't take much magic to support it afterward.

Justin took the book and looked at the page, feeling as if he'd been handed something in another language. Unforunately, the only other language he knew was French, so there was no help there. His eyes searched the page, trying to find something in English to indicate what the hell he was looking at. He caught the word message somewhere and figured it had something to do with what they wanted to accomplish.

"So, runes can send messages, huh?" He'd never taken the class, so he had no idea. "I can copy the chapter and give it to Anthony - he should be able to figure it out."

He looked up and smiled at the bloke. "Thanks."

"Well, not exactly, but they can create a means to." Eli could have easily gone into the theory as to exactly what they did or how they worked, but it would have been lost on this man and really he did have his own issues to deal with. It was probably best that this man was going to share the information with his smarter friend. Except it would be interesting to watch him struggle. And even see just what he might come up with.

"Runic magic is actually quite useful, but often overlooked." People preferred the flourish of wands and spells. While that was all well and fine, Eli had always needed more substance. "But that is probably a good place to start."

"I'm sure in the right hands it can be pretty useful," Justin extended, "but in this case, it really is over my head. I'm sure my friend will get something out of it, though."

He offered his hand for a proper shake. "Name's Justin Finch-Fletchley. I'm always one to return a kindness, so owl me if you ever need help with something I can help with. Which, honestly, usually involves a listening ear, the Muggle world, on occasion fine wine, and sexual favours."

A name, that was good. Helpful even should he want to come back to this one. Eli fixed his face into a sort of polite smile. "Well, then I suppose I pointed you in the right direction at the very lease," he said taking the hand in turn. "I'm Eli Chambers." He didn't address the sexual favors comment because it was easier to ignore it, so he could get on with his visit.

"And if you're all set here, I should just get going." He did still need to get the books he wanted and eventually make it back to the office. Today was a day that he couldn't work late because he had plans with Samara for the evening. And truly he could use a night out which might include wine and sexual favors that he actually wanted.

"Oh yeah, by all means go back to what you were doing. I'm sorry I interrupted you. And really, thanks again," he added with a grin.

He hoped he ended up copying the right pages from the book if it was to be any help, but even if he at least had the book right, Anthony could still find it if he needed to read up any further. Justin was rather pleased with himself - he'd met a possible new friend, and had made himself useful.
