Characters: Healer Crumplebottom, Jayne Dough/Pandora & Marietta Edgecombe
Setting: St. Mungo's, 9 November 2003, 11:25am
Rating: General Public
Summary: Marietta has plans to put someone under Imperius and ends up being assigned a mission by Pandora to prove her worth.

So the healer Zacharias had referred to turned out to be none other than Crumplebottom, a short, plump little fellow with a client list that would match up well with the recently deceased matchmaker's and then some. Though she wasn't Pureblood, Marietta was still considered 'special' enough that she could make herself one of his patients, not that this had been her plan necessarily. She had made herself an appointment for nothing in particular, just to get a feel for the man and his temperament, but also so that she could follow him after her appointment was done.

When he waved her goodbye and walked away down a hallway toward the back, she followed him as discretely as possible, making sure that anyone else who might see her thought that she was following him toward an exam room, though she wasn't really sure where he was going. She just wanted him to make himself scarce quickly so she could get this overwith already.

Finally he turned into a room and she followed quickly behind him, but what she found on the other side of the door was not Crumplebottom alone, but him and one of the last people Marietta wanted to see just then.

Marietta sighed over-dramatically. "I really hadn't planned on doing this with an audience, but I haven't the time to deal with security either." She glanced over at Jayne and then at Crumplebottom again who was going to find his wand at any moment. "I suppose this will have to be though. Imperio!" Marietta cried, her wand still pointed at the healer. Instantly he stopped searching for his wand and his face went lax as though he hadn't a care in the world.

Marietta pointed her wand at Jayne instead. "You have a way of always ruining things for me, don't you? How were you able to slash my face without my even feeling it? That's some seriously advanced magic for an administrative assistant."

Jayne's eyebrows rose as the unforgivable was cast. Something tells me this bitch means business.

"Need some help, darling?"

My wand is by my clothes, so a definite yes.

"Excellent. This girl has spirit. Perhaps it's something we can use to our advantage."

She's a bit of a maverick, I'd think.

"Perhaps, but even Mavericks will obey when they fear for their lives."

And with that, Jayne was swept to the background and Pandora was in charge, just in time for the question.

"Ah, I see you enjoyed my little gift, though you are no longer wearing it. Quite a shame. Perhaps I'll have to make it more permanent next time. But as for your question..."

A flick of her hand and a whispered accio had the wand flying from Edgecombe's hand to her own. "I believe it went something like that."

"Oh you have got to be kidding me!" Marietta huffed. She knew there was something off with this woman, but she never expected anything like this.

Crumplebottom was still standing around staring blankly at the wall like an idiot, so to release some of her own frustration Marietta turned on him instead. "Oh go do your bloody job you useless git! I don't need you right now, I'll deal with you later!" The healer seemed to snap back into a human being and walked out of the room, taking no notice of the two women in the room. "Don't let anyone come in either!"

Marietta looked at Jayne, now holding her own wand. "So you aren't just an administrative assistant then, I take it? What exactly are you?" She tried to keep the sneer out of her voice, but didn't quite manage it completely.

"Whatever do you mean?" she replied innocently. "You should really have much more respect for those who are 'just' assistants. Some really have no desire to kiss backsides in order to achieve what should be gained by hard work and good ideas. Unfortunately, the world works that way, at least until those in lower positions find themselves in positions of power."

She looked up and down at the wand in her hand as if it were an interesting piece of art that she was questioning whether to purchase.

"But then, you know something of positions of power, don't you? You must, daring to come into a public place to cast an unforgivable upon a well-respected healer." A knowing smile. "Either powerful, or desperate."

"Oh don't play stupid with me. You know I referring to the fact that you just performed wandless magic. If you're that powerful you wouldn't be wasting your time working as an assistant - no one with half a brain would be." And generally someone with half a brain wouldn't be insulting the powerful witch who just took her wand away from her with said wandless magic, but Marietta was nothing if not true to herself, even to the end if that's what this was turning out to be.

"Desperate? Please. And I don't have to explain my reasoning to you. Or I suppose I do if I've any hope of getting my wand back?" Marietta raised her eyebrow and then sneered at her. She looked around for a chair to sit on because she wasn't going to just stand around for this since she didn't know how long it would take. "He's a pawn in a plan of mine. I need him to do me a little favour and convince a pompous prat that I am pregnant. It's all rather harmless really - for the healer at least." Marietta shrugged sounding a bit bored.

"So am I getting my wand back or not? I had no interest in you when I came here anyhow. He was supposed to be alone."

"You've no real sense of self-preservation, do you?" she said with a shake of her head. "Usually a terrible trait, but in the right circumstances, could prove very, very valuable."

She twirled the wand around, then slid it over her right ear as if it were nothing more than a pencil.

"So, you need to make someone - a male, I presume - think you are pregnant. And why would that be? You have my curiosity piqued. I do hope it's not so boring as an attempt to snag an eligible bachelor to marry well."

"I have every interest in self-preservation. All my interests are selfishly inclined - there really are no other kind to be had. I don't see how that would be valuable to you in any way though." Marietta eyed her warily as the woman played around with her wand.

She scoffed when Jayne mentioned marriage. "As if I would consider marrying him. No, I only said I was pregnant with his child to watch him squirm. It's probably one of the few things that he would most dislike to see happen, especially if it means telling his family that he has fathered a bastard child. He's rather a dear friend of mine, but he has quite a lot to learn if he thinks he can duel with the likes of me and win."

"That's certainly more interesting," she said with a pleased tone to her voice. "I've always thought the best torture was done through the mind, rather than the body - though when the two are combined, you can't help but win."

She stood up from the bed and walked toward the girl with a gait that made even her hospital gown look commanding. "You may have potential, but you have yet to learn when to keep yourself quiet, particularly when speaking to someone who could kill you with nary a thought."

She reached out to touch the girl's chin, lifting it up slightly. "Tell me, dear, how much do you value your life?"

Marietta had not felt particularly threatened in this situation until the woman approached her. The way that she walked reminded her of someone that had been haunting her in her dreams. That couldn't be possible though. This was just Jayne Dough from the Ministry of Magic, unless-

"I value my life above all others," she replied automatically, looking into this woman's eyes. It couldn't be possible, could it? This could not be the woman that Marietta had grown to have some affection for, despite the torture she caused her in her dreams. Yet she commanded herself in the same way and Marietta felt drawn to her in a way she was not drawn to any other person. And she had power Marietta had never seen before, had used it on her already.

She had to ask - she had to know. Sounding more humbled than she had ever sounded before in Jayne's presence, not to mention much calmer, Marietta asked with an awed voice, "Are you the red-haired woman from my dreams? The one who holds power beyond which no one has ever matched? I've wanted to be in your presence ever since I started having those dreams."

She smiled. "You flatter me," she replied, tracing a finger down the girl's cheek. "I hope you've been enjoying my memory. Far too many have seen them as curses rather than the prizes they are."

"Ahhh, yes, we can use this one."

But she's such a bitch!

"Aren't we all, dear? It's far better to have her working with us, than against us."

But she has a memory. Can't you just kill her?

"Jayne, are you actually advocating murder? I think I might cry."

No, just... she annoys me.

"I doubt she'll annoy you any further now that she knows we work together. Though if after a while you feel the same, yes, we can kill her."

All right...

"What do you desire most, girl? Miss... Edgecombe, I believe?"

"I enjoyed your torturing me. You command so much power and your presence is awe-inspiring. You are also very beautiful." Marietta saw the red-headed woman in her mind, rather than the brunette in front of her who was not nearly as beautiful as that woman in her dreams.

When she asked what she desired most, Marietta did not even take a moment to respond. "Power, like you. Obviously I would never be as powerful as you, but I want to command respect and power from people like you do. Despite the fact that I did what was necessary to get myself where I needed to go, no one will ever take me seriously because of what Granger did to my face." She actually had the humility to look ashamed for once.

"Why thank you, my dear."

Her beauty was a fact, plain and simple, yet it was nice to hear it complimented every now and then.

She's quite the suck-up, isn't she.

She giggled and pet back the girl's hair, observing the scars from whatever it was that had been done by this Granger person.

"I don't usually court followers, but you... you might have potential. I also enjoy how my dearest Jayne grows a backbone in your presence, though she isn't quite as pleased as I am about that one." She giggled softly. "Perhaps I might look to teaching you something of power... but I would require an act of obedience to prove yourself."

Marietta looked down. "If I had known that it was you, I wouldn't have-I apologise for my behaviour, Jayne. I will try to be more pleasant to you in the future." Whether she truly meant it or not wasn't entirely clear, but Marietta wasn't above being nice to someone she didn't like if it meant getting something out of it. She knew what she was meant to do.

"I can do it. Anything you require, Lady. I know I can!" Her voice was firm yet revering-anyone who had met Marietta had probably never heard her speak this way before to anyone, but of course they'd never seen her in front of the most powerful witch in their world, either.

She stepped back toward the assessment bed and sat down, crossing her legs regally.

"I have seen those journals so many of you are fond of using, and have noted that a young lady by the name of Lavender Brown has been gathering names of those who are 'suffering' from my beloved memories. If you were to get ahold of the list, I would be ever so pleased."

She smiled almost tenderly. "You do this, and when we next speak, I will explain to you exactly what it would entail to be in my service. It is not a decision to make lightly, my dear." Her face didn't change, but in the swiftness of a moment, her eyes turned hard. "Nor am I a person who takes lightly to being betrayed by someone whose quest for power superceded their self-preservation."

Marietta nodded vigorously when Pandora told her what she needed. She already began thinking of ways she could achieve this for Pandora. "I will get it for you," she replied simply. The plan would be easy enough, execution maybe a bit more difficult. She would need to spend a bit of time following Brown if she did not have a fireplace in her flat...

She listened carefully, taking in the information. "I don't make decisions haphazardly. I will consider it with the right amount of deliberation. And please, my Lady, you will not have to worry about my allegiance - I would never betray you for my own gain. I am not so stupid as to not know when someone is far more powerful than myself."

"Very good, then."

She pulled the wand from behind her ear and held it out, handle out, to Marietta.

"Now, will you please fetch the healer for me? Jayne needs to finish this little formality so that we can continue with our plans for the day."

Marietta held out her hand and took her wand back, slightly amazed that she had actually got it back but still more amazed that she had met the woman from her dreams and was being given a chance to work for her. Better yet, she wasn't being murdered on the spot. Zacharias' annoying smugness had really just given her a gift she couldn't possibly ever repay him for; not that she'd ever tell him that, of course.

"Oh right, of course. I'm sorry for interrupting. He never mentioned having anymore appointments this morning. I'll send him back now." Marietta put her wand back in her pocket, feeling absolutely elated. Before leaving the room she said to the woman, "Thank you so much, my Lady. And good day, Jayne."

"Good day," she replied, waching as the girl left. Then, with a heaving sigh, she relaxed and allowed Jayne back control of her body.

"I still can't believe you did that."

"She's quite... enthusiastic, don't you think? And quite a pretty thing. We will have much fun with her."

"If you say so. I'll save my judgement for later. Bint..."
