Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 08 2003, character: elijah chambers, character: roger davies

Characters: Eli Chambers & Roger Davies
Setting: Eli's study, Chambers home, mid morning
Rating: Worksafe for now.
Summary: Eli needs a partner in crime for an experiment. He might also need some bro time given the fight with his wife, but those are details.

Apparently lying was becoming a thing. Or at least most of a thing. Although he had actually stopped in at his lab this morning to pick up a few of his personal affects. There wasn't a lot of material that he was allowed to take in or out of the Department of Mystery, but Eli certainly knew exactly where those lines were and how much he could push them. Technically, he could have pursued this particular venture under proper channels, but at the moment it was more a personal interest than a professional one. And really, taking it home with him made it easier to bring Roger into the mix.

Eli couldn't be sure how long that Samara would be out with Jason, but he probably had a few hours. It was more than enough time to get through whatever he needed with Roger and then start in on the promise of drinks. She could fuss about that, but drinking was probably better than being caught meddling with what they had been fighting over just last night right there on this very desk. To anyone else, the room didn't look any different, but Eli was sure if felt off.

Only that didn't matter. Not in the long run. Right now, his study was the best place for this. He just needed to activate the wards on the room and it was most secure room in the house. And with the pensieve set up in here, it was all he needed.

"I've been wondering when you'd get here," he called hearing someone in the house. Really, the only person it could have been was Roger anyone else, Eli had hexed an alert to warn him. "I'm in the study."

Roger really didn't know what Eli was asking him to help out with, and he did suspect that Samara probably wouldn't be happy about him helping, if she and Eli were fighting. He had a feeling that it DID have to do with Eli's experiment, since he specifically told him it wasn't.

But whatever. It was his day off, and it felt like forever since he'd seen his best mate. And they were going to go drinking! And Roger was pretty sure he was going to get laid that night. So Roger was happy and feeling good.

He'd apparated to Eli's and let himself in (because he was a best mate, he could totally do that) and Roger found his way to Eli's study. "I figured you would be!" he called back when he heard Eli's voice, and followed it till he was standing in the doorway.

The first thing he saw was a pensieve, and then he really got curious. "So... what are we experimenting with today?"

"Come in, come in," he said standing up to usher Roger into the room. Without much fuss or spectacle, Eli used his wand to make a small cut in his hand, using his blood to seal the room from anything being overheard or wandering in just in case people came home early. Really, it was a common enough thing that it probably didn't look like more than him simply shutting the door.

"It seems to be that there is a lot of fuss going on about minds or memory lately and I wanted to test something out. Well, strictly speaking I wanted to test something about again." Even if it was something that he worked with every day, digging into his own brain always made him a bit more jumpy. Without seeing the exact edges, he knew that in the shadows there was something he shouldn't know about, something that he wasn't meant to go poking at it and it was probably there for good reason.

Except now there was another curious incident with his memories and this one wasn't one that made him nervous. This one just made him want to keep digging. "However, I need to establish a baseline, so you're going to have be honest with me...have you been having those 'dreams' that are going around?"

Roger did come into the study, and looked at Eli curiously, waiting for an explanation. He didn't flinch when he saw Eli cut his hand (he was an auror after all, he was used to a little blood) but it still kind of freaked him out that Eli did that. "I keep trying to remember if you were this weird before you started working in the Department of Mysteries."

He figured they were using the pensieve, and now Roger was... worried. They were going to be digging around in his mind. "I'm not going to be a vegetable or anything by the end of this, am I?" he asked partially joking but partially wanting Eli to elaborate.

He shook his head about the dreams though. "Not since that first night. Which is the only thing I have going for me. Work has been bloody ridiculous, so if I was losing sleep too, I'd be checking myself into St. Mungo's."

To Eli it was sometimes weird that people didn't take the sort of precautions he did. Although then again, few people were into the sort of things he was and his work and interests tended to require a bit more security. "No, not a vegetable, at least not intentionally." As a tool, a pensieve was a relatively harmless thing. It allowed a third person perspective of memories, any sort of complication came in acquiring the memory, which is exactly where he was running into a bit of trouble.

"I seem to have stumbled upon a sort of curiosity. I have been having the reoccurring nightmares and while I am able to pull a clean memory of the nightmares from the first night, I seem to be having some trouble with those that follow." As if to prove the point, he accessed that particular memory. Floating to the top was a watery image of him being surrounded by dementours, losing his mind and his soul in the process.

This was far more than he would have willingly told Samara, but it was different with her. She was having the same nightmare as him. What he needed was someone outside of their connection. While it would have been quite nice for Roger to also be having the reoccurring nightmares to examine the issue as well, he could work with this. "Although before we get to that, how familiar are you with how one of these works?"

"You know I was mostly joking there. When you say things at least not intentionally, that tells me there is a possibility of scrambling my brain here," Roger said. He knew a pensieve was just for memories, but he had no idea what Eli was going to attempt.

"You have? You didn't tell me you were having nightmares," Roger said wondering what else Eli could be keeping. "That is weird," he said curiously. "Why wouldn't you be able to take out the recent nightmares?" He glanced down at the memory in the pensieve, and it really did look nightmare worthy.

"Dementors," he said with a shudder before looking back to Eli. "Yeah I know. You extract the memory with your wand, and put it in the peniseve. You can watch it or actually go into the memory."

"Well, I'm telling you now." The truth was that Eli didn't tell anyone. That had actually be the cause of the fight the night before, but he hadn't thought others needed to know. Not yet. But that was who he was, weird, creepy and full of secrets. It was how it worked when you were Eli Chambers - how things had to work.

"Okay," he said not fully convinced by Roger's base explanation of how this worked, but he was only an auror. Really, what he needed was an obliviator, someone who knew the nuances of the mind, but then again maybe that would be far closer of a probing than he wanted. "Show me. With one of yours." Eli needed to be sure that Roger could produce an appropriate memory on his own before they moved forward.

"I suppose so," Roger said since that was truly the best explanation he was going to get. Eli was one of his best mates, but that still didn't stop Eli from being secretive even from him.

Roger looked over the pensieve, and reached to take his wand from his pocket. He could hear Eli's pessimism in his voice, which just made Roger roll his eyes. Did he forget that he was a Ravenclaw or what? "Fine, putting it in the pensieve," he said lifting his wand up to his temple, before concentrating to extract a memory. He assumed he was good with any memory since this was just a demonstration, so he drew out the memory of the day he made Eli tryout for Quidditch, and slipping the shining whisp of memory into the pensieve.

Eli watched Roger critically as he extracted the memory. He knew plenty of people, Ravenclaws or not who could understand and talk through the theory well enough, but completely lost it when it came to the practical application. Once it was in the the pensieve he took a moment to poke around at it looking at a much younger version of himself toying around on a broom because a friend had asked him of it.

It was a safe memory, something they both had in common which meant that he wouldn't have to ask for something else. Instead he simply remembered that day for himself and pulled it from his head, placing it into the pensieve.

"Now, if you are willing I would like to you scoop up my memory and place it back into your mind." This would be the part where he could guarantee what would happen to Roger's mind. He had an idea, but he needed evidence and an account beyond his own.

"You... want to put your memories in my head?" Roger asked. Was that even possible? He supposed it was technically, since you could remove and put back your own memories. "What kind of memory are you going to put in there? Your nightmare?" Roger asked curiously. He figured he had a right to know at least if it was gong to be something he really shouldn't see.

"No, not yet at least." He shook his head. Roger was getting ahead of them, but it was reassuring to know that he was on the same line of thought. "We're just going to start with my memory of the quidditch trial." Eli pulled the memory in question right to the surface. By many accounts it wouldn't be that different from Roger's with how this sort of magic worked, but it the best place to start.

In theory, the nuances might even be somewhat recognizable, more so, Eli wanted to see if there was any sort of difference in trying to remove a foreign memory from your head. "It's an easy, simple sort of thing, shouldn't cause any trouble, but it's what happens after that which remains to be seen."
