RP: Memorial Day Barbecue
Who: Everyone
Where: Out behind G's and Derek's houses
When: May 30
Summary: It's Memorial Day!

Growing up Memorial Day hadn't meant much to Mike other than a day off school--not that he made enough of those on his own through skipping, but once he had joined the military it took on a whole new meaning. And while there were many years he couldn't celebrate it properly, due to being undercover infiltrating various nefarious kinds, he always made sure to do it right when he could and this year would be no exception.

Mike had agreed to take the lead in getting everything setup and going for the Memorial Day barbecue. Not that it meant all that much work, since the shopping was done, and Savannah had given him lists of tasks to do and diagrams of where tables should be. Just as the grill had finished heating up and was good and ready, Mike placed the meat on and took a swig of the beer.

"Grilling and beer, can't ask for much more than that," he grinned, except of course for something to shoot, but he didn't voice that last thought.

"Well I don't grant your premise, dear sir," Sheldon responded a bit nasally, which often happened when he was disagreeing with people. "There are plenty of jokes that are better because of their scientific references, which most people wouldn't understand. For example, do you know what the best Something-Walks-Into-a-Bar joke is?" He paused for only a second before continuing. "I'll tell you. A Higgs-Boson walks into a church, the priest says 'We don’t allow Higgs-Bosons in here.' The Higgs-Boson says 'But without me how can you have mass?'" Sheldon cracked up laughing. "Gets me every time."

Sheldon refrained from commenting on the citations. The best he could come up with was there being regulations about them, and that wasn't very funny. "Oh, I shall have to miss some of those parties. I wouldn't want my nerve cells to become desensitized to endorphins through overexposure to them. Then I would have less fun. So in the long run, one has the most fun by having individual instances of fun in small doses and separated by the appropriate amount of time needed to prevent desensitization." He could find the models to back that up, too.

"Ah, interesting. So I just need to employ Evasive Maneuver Pattern Rho, which is named after Penny. It's essentially as you described. Although I usually don't employ it until well after she's started looking for something to beat me senseless with." He rubbed the back of his head as if he had gotten hit there recently, although he hadn't. "Yes, her reliability probably stems from her cheerleader training." It also explained her incorrect usage of words and abnormal definitions for things likes flirting. Cheerleaders weren't very smart.

Dom wanted to disagree, but before he could, Sheldon started about Higgs-Boson and a church, and he couldn't help laugh at the joke. "There is funny," he said, still chuckling. "However, most people would consider us weird, so I don't know if that proves that it's a successful joke."

He snorted. "I'm not sure you can. Somehow parties are supposed to help with team unity, and Sunday dinners are sort of mandatory. However, I'm sure that you can avoid some of them."

He grinned. "I wouldn't wait with Savannah. She's been training for months and even does additional SEAL training, which is how she can kick most guys' asses, even though she's tiny." He nodded. "Maybe, or the fact that Callen is a stickler when it comes to security."

"Thank you," Sheldon beamed at Dom's compliment. "It's always nice to be complimented by someone of a similar intellect as your own. But I have to say I still don't grant your standard for successfulness for a joke. I think as long as the targeted audience, in this case you, laughs, then it is a successful joke." He was tempted to quote the wikipedia article on jokes from his home dimension, but he figured it wasn't needed.

He nodded at Dom's next few sentences. He once again took out his phone. "Memo to Double Doctor Agent Cooper: Look into ways to suppress endorphin release so as to prevent desensitization due to the number of mandatory parties I must attend."

"Very well, institute evasive maneuver pattern Rho immediately. I got it." He arched an eyebrow. "What sort of security procedures does Callen enforce? Unless they are the same ones I already know about in which case your answer would be redundant and unnecessary." He liked to be as efficient as possible with his communication, which is another reason why Savannah's improper definitions bothered him.

"You're welcome," he answered, "and thank you. " Dom knew that the only reason Sheldon was even bothering talking to him was that he considered him smart, so it wasn't a surprise, but it still felt good to be appreciated for his intellect. It had stopped happening when he'd joined NCIS. "I do accept that the targeted audience is valid, but most people target the widest possible audience. I think I've just spent too much time out of school. At NCIS, people just look at you strangely if you make physics jokes."

Dom smiled. "That's one way of doing it or you can talk to unpleasant people. That should balance out things."

He nodded. "Very good." He looked at the yard. "I'm not sure what he does exactly for his house, but they usually walk around in group or twos, even on base, and I'm sure he has plenty of rules within the house. Also Savannah and Deeks both had additional training."

"I suppose I could team my jokes up with education about why they are funny," he considered the possibility. It was an untraditional approach and in some ways defeated the purpose of telling jokes. "It sounds like NCIS needs a theoretical physics division."

"I'll take that under advisement," he took out his phone and typed out a note that said: Talk to unpleasant people on a regular basis. It didn't deserve a voice memo.

"Interesting, wouldn't it just be more safe and reduce the possibility of engendering derision to have the same rules for all the houses?" He only found this vaguely interesting. He wouldn't even pursue it if he didn't want to continue talking to Dom.

"I don't know. If people don't get them, I doubt they would get the explanation and if they did, they wouldn't think funny. I have the same problem with random pieces of trivia," he said. "They don't find it as interesting, and while a theoretical physics division would be great, I doubt it would happen."

Dom shrugged. "Maybe but not everyone could do that type of training. Also people don't like to be restricted in their movements so much. Safety and freedom have to be balanced to allow people to live productive and happy lives. Callen's rules might keep you alive but don't provide for other considerations, so not everyone would be able to tolerate those rules."

Sheldon nodded. "I suppose that makes sense. Savannah doesn't strike me as the type of person to enjoy such restrictions. But she has her future hubby with her so maybe it doesn't matter to her."

He glanced at his watch. "Time to eat."
