RP: Memorial Day Barbecue
Who: Everyone
Where: Out behind G's and Derek's houses
When: May 30
Summary: It's Memorial Day!

Growing up Memorial Day hadn't meant much to Mike other than a day off school--not that he made enough of those on his own through skipping, but once he had joined the military it took on a whole new meaning. And while there were many years he couldn't celebrate it properly, due to being undercover infiltrating various nefarious kinds, he always made sure to do it right when he could and this year would be no exception.

Mike had agreed to take the lead in getting everything setup and going for the Memorial Day barbecue. Not that it meant all that much work, since the shopping was done, and Savannah had given him lists of tasks to do and diagrams of where tables should be. Just as the grill had finished heating up and was good and ready, Mike placed the meat on and took a swig of the beer.

"Grilling and beer, can't ask for much more than that," he grinned, except of course for something to shoot, but he didn't voice that last thought.

Sheldon wasn't sure that he could handle two major parties in as many days. And a barbecue didn't really lend itself to being able to camp out in the shade with his laptop. So instead he loaded his iphone with a few journal articles to read.

He saw Dom and decided that after yesterday he needed to chat to someone whose intelligence was within the same standard deviation as his own. He figured Dom would be the closest to that.

"Hello, you're not doing that wrong," he said with a quirky smile. "Get it. It's a playful reference to our first conversation in the team center."

Dom couldn't believe that they were having so many parties, but at least this was right on their backyard and he could leave his things on the porch and just walk between the two backyards, leaving his computer in the shade, but with his phone always in his hand.

He was checking the reservation for that night, when Sheldon approached him. Dom smiled back. "Thank you, and yes, I got it. It's very playful." He could see how living with Sheldon could drive you crazy, but in small doses, the man was very amusing.

"I have to ask. Why did we get that survey yesterday?" He knew that there had to be a reason and he doubted that someone had hit on Sheldon.

"Oh, good, I'm glad you got it." There almost pride in his voice. "People usually don't get my playful banter. How are you doing today?"

He clasped his hands together in a professorial manner. "Oh, yes, initial research you see. I had what I thought was an ironclad understanding of flirting challenged yesterday. So, I wanted to see how a larger segment of the population understood flirting. Based on the responses, I'll then either pursue further more in depth and scientifically sound research or just tell Savannah she is wrong." He paused and covered his mouth. "Oops."

"I did, and it wasn't hard to get." He smirked. "We must be kindred spirits. I'm doing fine. It's hot and too sunny to read at the computer, but I was told that it's good to have fun once in a while. How are you doing?"

He chuckled. "Sorry, man. No amount of research or empirical evidence will work when it comes to Savannah. I think everyone has taken the position that it's just easier to go along with her. It's not scientifically sound, but in the end, it saves you a lot of headaches. Besides, Savannah has her own definition of things."

"I'll have to come up with a harder one next time," he replied. "Yes, we could use some more shade back here. They should really plant some artificial trees. They provide such great shade. I am doing fine. My endorphin levels have been at their highest yesterday and today since I arrived in Shel-" he corrected himself "Omega Land." It was his way of saying that he had enjoyed himself. Of course he hoped that Dom didn't point out the obvious correlation the high endorphin levels have with being social. He really didn't want to be confronted with evidence that he should be more social. He preferred to ignore such evidence whenever he could.

Sheldon's look became incredulous. "She has her own definition of things? How do you people let her get away with that? Not having a common, group-accepted definition of words seriously hampers the reliability of communication, which in turn hampers group and base security." He took out his phone. "Memo to Double Doctor Agent Cooper: Speak with Renko about the obvious, and yet seemingly unnoticed, security flaw concerning the threat to reliable communication posed by a certain fellow agent."

"You know that the point of a joke is to make people understand it, right? That's why most jokes use very common language and concept. The greater number of people get it, the more successful the joke," he said, wondering if that had ever occurred to Sheldon.

"The army has regulations about backyards, about trees, about the height of the grass, about the colors of the flowers," he said. "The army has regulations about everything and if you go against them, you get citations, so I doubt that we're getting artificial trees." He nodded. "Well, Savannah organizes plenty of parties, so your endorphin levels can stay at high levels on the weekend."

He thought for a moment and then shrugged. "I think it's because she can talk forever and she will reason with you until you give up, so must people have learned to just go along with what she says. I just nod. It works fine for me." He looked at the woman who was currently walking around in the shortest shorts he'd ever seen. "She's very reliable when it comes to security, training, shooting, or anything of the sort. It's the social and emotional relationships that seem to differ from the rest of the world. I'm sure Renko will figure it out soon enough." If this Renko was anything like his Renko, he probably had already figured it out and used it to flirt with her.

"Well I don't grant your premise, dear sir," Sheldon responded a bit nasally, which often happened when he was disagreeing with people. "There are plenty of jokes that are better because of their scientific references, which most people wouldn't understand. For example, do you know what the best Something-Walks-Into-a-Bar joke is?" He paused for only a second before continuing. "I'll tell you. A Higgs-Boson walks into a church, the priest says 'We don’t allow Higgs-Bosons in here.' The Higgs-Boson says 'But without me how can you have mass?'" Sheldon cracked up laughing. "Gets me every time."

Sheldon refrained from commenting on the citations. The best he could come up with was there being regulations about them, and that wasn't very funny. "Oh, I shall have to miss some of those parties. I wouldn't want my nerve cells to become desensitized to endorphins through overexposure to them. Then I would have less fun. So in the long run, one has the most fun by having individual instances of fun in small doses and separated by the appropriate amount of time needed to prevent desensitization." He could find the models to back that up, too.

"Ah, interesting. So I just need to employ Evasive Maneuver Pattern Rho, which is named after Penny. It's essentially as you described. Although I usually don't employ it until well after she's started looking for something to beat me senseless with." He rubbed the back of his head as if he had gotten hit there recently, although he hadn't. "Yes, her reliability probably stems from her cheerleader training." It also explained her incorrect usage of words and abnormal definitions for things likes flirting. Cheerleaders weren't very smart.

Dom wanted to disagree, but before he could, Sheldon started about Higgs-Boson and a church, and he couldn't help laugh at the joke. "There is funny," he said, still chuckling. "However, most people would consider us weird, so I don't know if that proves that it's a successful joke."

He snorted. "I'm not sure you can. Somehow parties are supposed to help with team unity, and Sunday dinners are sort of mandatory. However, I'm sure that you can avoid some of them."

He grinned. "I wouldn't wait with Savannah. She's been training for months and even does additional SEAL training, which is how she can kick most guys' asses, even though she's tiny." He nodded. "Maybe, or the fact that Callen is a stickler when it comes to security."

"Thank you," Sheldon beamed at Dom's compliment. "It's always nice to be complimented by someone of a similar intellect as your own. But I have to say I still don't grant your standard for successfulness for a joke. I think as long as the targeted audience, in this case you, laughs, then it is a successful joke." He was tempted to quote the wikipedia article on jokes from his home dimension, but he figured it wasn't needed.

He nodded at Dom's next few sentences. He once again took out his phone. "Memo to Double Doctor Agent Cooper: Look into ways to suppress endorphin release so as to prevent desensitization due to the number of mandatory parties I must attend."

"Very well, institute evasive maneuver pattern Rho immediately. I got it." He arched an eyebrow. "What sort of security procedures does Callen enforce? Unless they are the same ones I already know about in which case your answer would be redundant and unnecessary." He liked to be as efficient as possible with his communication, which is another reason why Savannah's improper definitions bothered him.

"You're welcome," he answered, "and thank you. " Dom knew that the only reason Sheldon was even bothering talking to him was that he considered him smart, so it wasn't a surprise, but it still felt good to be appreciated for his intellect. It had stopped happening when he'd joined NCIS. "I do accept that the targeted audience is valid, but most people target the widest possible audience. I think I've just spent too much time out of school. At NCIS, people just look at you strangely if you make physics jokes."

Dom smiled. "That's one way of doing it or you can talk to unpleasant people. That should balance out things."

He nodded. "Very good." He looked at the yard. "I'm not sure what he does exactly for his house, but they usually walk around in group or twos, even on base, and I'm sure he has plenty of rules within the house. Also Savannah and Deeks both had additional training."

"I suppose I could team my jokes up with education about why they are funny," he considered the possibility. It was an untraditional approach and in some ways defeated the purpose of telling jokes. "It sounds like NCIS needs a theoretical physics division."

"I'll take that under advisement," he took out his phone and typed out a note that said: Talk to unpleasant people on a regular basis. It didn't deserve a voice memo.

"Interesting, wouldn't it just be more safe and reduce the possibility of engendering derision to have the same rules for all the houses?" He only found this vaguely interesting. He wouldn't even pursue it if he didn't want to continue talking to Dom.

"I don't know. If people don't get them, I doubt they would get the explanation and if they did, they wouldn't think funny. I have the same problem with random pieces of trivia," he said. "They don't find it as interesting, and while a theoretical physics division would be great, I doubt it would happen."

Dom shrugged. "Maybe but not everyone could do that type of training. Also people don't like to be restricted in their movements so much. Safety and freedom have to be balanced to allow people to live productive and happy lives. Callen's rules might keep you alive but don't provide for other considerations, so not everyone would be able to tolerate those rules."

He glanced at his watch. "Time to eat."

Marty and Clay

The events of the past week had been a blur, between the dumbass agent dying--that was one of the problems with the feds, the ones he had killed died too easily, there was no sense of satisfaction--and the lockdown and the moving and the boring classes and the gun qualifying, it seemed like it had only been a few hours since he had stood on this very ground talking to G Callen about his arthritic hands. He didn't like telling people about that, but he knew part of surviving here meant being a team player.

"Agent Deeks, could I have a word please?" He asked as he finished off the cigar. He held the stub in between his fingers waiting for it to cool so he could dispose of it properly. He figured tossing it on the grass would earn him a stern talking to. He extended his other hand to the other man, who reminded him somewhat of his stepson. He just hoped the man wasn't a whiny little bitch like his stepson. "I would like to talk to you about sparring and such."

A day at the pool and now another one of their barbecues and hanging out with the team, if you managed to forget about the super powers and the government wanting to kill you and just everything else about this place that made the whole thing shit you could pretend for half a second that this was fun. Frisbees and tossing a football around and beer, yeah maybe even a whole minute if you were good.

"Of course," Marty hadn't expected Clay Marrow of all people to approach him here, and from what he'd heard from Savannah about the man she probably thought that was a very good thing. But considering they'd have go work together Marty thought it was probably a good idea he be on speaking terms with the man.

"Sure, sure. You can drop the agent if you want, almost everyone calls me Deeks." There were the exceptions, but he wasn't at a giving out first names sort of place yet. He nodded his head though moving them away from the group slightly. "So what can I do for you?"

Clay had left the leather cutte at home this week. He was just in a solid white tshirt and jeans. He wasn't a shorts man. Maybe it was age. Maybe it was just several decades on a motorcycle. Maybe it was jeans were better for running in since shorts tended to be baggier and wouldn't protect your legs as much from obstacles. Maybe it was all of the above.

"Alright, Deeks it is," he said. "Well since you are in charge of the sparring group that I'm in," whatever that meant. Who the hell called it sparring these days? Who the hell called it sparring in the past half decade? "I wanted to let you know that I suffer from severe arthritis in my hands. It's only an issue when an episode strikes. I use medication to decrease their frequency and mitigate their effects. But it seemed like something you should know. I know I would've told me CO that back in 'Nam." This kid probably wasn't old enough to be born during the Cold War much less Nam. And that irritated him. Having to be trained by a kid. But then he was among the oldest on the base.

"Congratulations, by the way, I wish you and your future wife well," he said with a smile and offering another handshake, this time congratulatory, even while thinking that Savannah was naive beyond belief.

Marty nodded when Clay told him about his issues with arthritis, and man did getting old suck or what? "Thanks for letting me know, it shouldn't be too much of a problem, and we can work on increasing your strength in other areas of the body so that when you're having trouble with your hands it won't slow you down." Marty nodded, he'd need to talk to Sam about some ideas but he was pretty sure he could make this work for everyone he'd been assigned.

And just looking at Clay was enough to tell him the man certainly could take care of himself, it was just about honing skills and making him better. Just like Sam had been doing with him.

Marty huffed an amused breath and grinned. "Thanks, man." He took Clays hand shaking. "It's kind of crazy, but that seems to be the way life is headed these days." He shrugged glancing at Savannah briefly.

"Alright that sounds good," Clay responded, his face turned a bit brighter. "I hadn't done much in those areas. Hands being essential to riding a motorcycle, and riding being essential to being President, it never really occurred to me. What did you have in mind?" He was curious. He wasn't yet able to imagine how having say stronger legs would make up for arthritic, useless hands. But he was willing to give Blondy a shot.

"Oh, married life is definitely crazy, throw in a government that is hunting you down, super powers, and not knowing where you'll be tomorrow, it'll be even crazier than mine." And he had had the government hunting him down. "You want a word from the wise: When she puts on a picnic fundraiser for a charity. Go. Don't complain. It'll make your life a lot easier."

"Well you're big enough to cause plenty of damage even without your hands, we're just going to work on focusing that. Arms and legs, a well aimed elbow can do plenty of damage." Marty chuckled. "And we can work with some open palm techniques if what gives you problems with your hands is making fists." Marty assured Clay - it would be a little work for both of them considering the sort of training Marty had been doing up to now but he'd figure something out to make sure Clay could take care of himself.

Marty chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, I've spent enough years avoiding marriage to know that it's crazy - but I think she's worth it." And this was definitely crazy for all the reasons clay had mentioned, as well as a few others. "Speaking from experience?" He asked with a smirk and a raised eyebrow. "Though it's good advice, why do you think I'm at these barbecues every weekend?" He chuckled.

"Well, elbows I can throw," he replied. If they were going back to square one, he was going to get angry, and getting angry wasn't especially hard for Clay. It was a wonder he hadn't erupted since arriving on this base. "Yes, making fists is the predominant problem. I'm not sure how open palm techniques will work. I never really paid attention to see how force on the palms affect the joint pain." Maybe this kid had a thing or two he could teach Clay. Maybe.

"Just a little experience," he held his fingers up with index finger and thumb slightly apart. "You seem to know what to do then. Follow their instructions. And pick your battles wisely. When's the big date?"

"Is there anything else I should know?"

"Yeah, figured you had that down pat, we'll just work on technique, make sure you do the most damage with as little effort as possible." Marty nodded, he could do this, it was just a matter of knowing what everyone in his group needed and going from there. "Okay, well then we'll start with the basics there and see how you do with it and if it doesn't cause you any trouble we'll get into the more advanced stuff."

Marty grinned, "How long have you been married?" Savannah might have written Clay off as a murderer, but he wasn't all that bad, and considering everything they were going to have to deal with one less person squeamish about killing when it needed to be done was only going to be a good thing. "Yeah, that's one thing I've learned so far. We're shooting for July 9th."

"About the upcoming nuptials or sparring?" Marty chuckled. "We'll start working this week I'll look into some techniques we can try and then let you know when we'll start working. Any other concerns or anything in particular you want to work on?"

"Sounds like a plan to me chief," he replied with a chuckle and smirk.

"Almost 20 years," he replied with a grin and a glance at Gemma, "almost 20 years with my queen. Here's hoping for 20 more." He left out the part about how he and Gemma had orchestrated her first husband's death. "July 9th. Nice and hot. Good choice." He wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic or serious. Mainly he just didn't give a fuck.

He thought for a moment and shook his head. "Not that I can think of," he pulled out another cigar and lit. "Besides planning to spend some time hunting down some good cigars later this week."

Marty whistled, "Man twenty years, congrats to you and to twenty more years for you both. That's impressive." Just thinking about that much time was something that pulled Marty up short he couldn't even picture where they'd be in 20 years much less being married for that long. "Yeah, Savannah has very strict guidelines for the appropriate months on getting married, so it should be a good one."

Marty nodded. "All right, I'll give you a call or track you down tomorrow or Wednesday and let you know what the plan is." He'd need to talk to both Brian and Eric too and get something going for the pair of them as well. At least Eric shouldn't be too much of a hassle. "Good luck with the search for cigars, I'm gonna go check on that fiance of mine, see you around."
