RP: The team
Who: anyone on the team
Where: Team Center
When: May 23 , 2011
Summary: after they deal with the case, there's the emotional aftermath to deal with

With so many people on the case, Derek decided to bring everyone at the team center after they returned to go over everything they had found. Garcia had input the picture of their mystery man in the computer and she'd be working to find him.

They were done with the actual case work, but without anyone in charge of White Collar and with Callen gone, it was up to Derek to make sure that people were all right. So after he dismissed everyone, he tried to talk to them individually and hopefully they would talk to each other as well.

Derek's first concern was Tim. The man was his partner, but he was also a civilian, and not used to seeing this kind of death. It was always different when you knew the person that was killed, when it wasn't an illness or an accident, when you knew that someone had actually taken his or her life.

Approaching the young man, he put an arm around his should. "How are you doing?"

Tim didn't know what to do with today, with any part of it. It was one thing doing profiles for Derek, figuring that part out - or at least trying to he still didn't think he was cut out for it the way Derek seemed to think he was. But this was different, this was a man he'd known, a man he'd talked to and interacted with and seen around the base since he'd arrived dead.

Not just dead, he'd been killed. He didn't just die in his sleep or choke on something, he was doing this job they'd all been stuck with and now he was dead and what the hell was Tim supposed to do with that?

He'd held it together though, but all Tim wanted now was a six pack or two and a quiet place to hide for the rest of the day. Not that things ever worked out the way Tim wanted. He didn't do hugs, didn't lean into people or any of that bullshit people did and yet when Derek put his arm around Tim's shoulders he didn't shrug him off.

"Fine." He muttered, though fine was so very far from where he was right then. Tim couldn't remember the last time he'd really been fine anymore. "He's dead, man. What the hell do you think I am?" He said a moment later, he wanted to hit something, to hurt someone - something to make sense of all of this. How was he supposed to do this?

Derek understood the confusion, fear, frustration, sadness, and many more emotions all crumpled into one giant ball of feelings that threatened to spill out and leave you empty. He would make sure to speak to all of them and ensure that they could deal with it.

"I think you're not fine. I think that reality is settling in a way that you don't like. I think that you want to run until you can't breathe anymore. I think that you'd rather be home getting drunk than here talking to me." He looked at Tim. "Getting close?" he asked with a soft smile. "I'll let you in on a secret. We all feel like that, but some of us have gone through this a few times, and it doesn't make it easier, but we've learned how to deal with all that you're feeling. "

He squeezed Tim's shoulder. "It's hard to lose a colleague. It's probably the hardest thing you'll go through, but you deal, if you're lucky you find a resolution, and then you move on."

"I'd rather punch someone than run." Tim said when Derek asked how he'd done with his guessing, which Tim knew he'd tell him wasn't really guessing, but it still felt that way to him. Like Morgan just looked and guessed, only he always guessed right, or close enough to it in any case.

It didn't make it any easier having Derek tell him how he was feeling, trying to tell him that everyone else was feeling the same way. It just made it worse, made all of that fear and anger twist up tight and ugly inside of him and made him feel like he couldn't hold it in.

"You shouldn't just be able to move on from that." Tim said shaking his head when Derek squeezed his shoulder. "He's dead, Peter is dead and he's never getting home to whatever life he had before he came here. How do you just move on from that? Knowing it could be you next time? He was just doing the job, he was out there and he got killed and he didn't even ... fuck." Tim swore as too much came spilling out of his mouth.

"I can't do this, I can't do this job - I told you when we started and you didn't want to hear it. I'm not that guy." He didn't care what that made him, the dumb hick he'd always known himself to be or maybe a coward or something else - not right now, not after seeing Peter like that today.

"We can go spar when I'm done talking to people," he offered, without commenting on the need. Sparring was much better than getting drunk as far as he was concerned.

"No, you don't just move on, Tim. You do what you can to solve the case, and you remember why you're doing it. You remember the man that he was, but you don't let it paralyze you. You move on from all those feelings that are inside you right now, because if you don't, you'll never be able to do anything in your life," he said gently.

Derek let go so he could stand in front of Tim and put his hands on his partner's shoulders. "You accept the danger, accept the fear, but you don't let it rule you. Instead, you use it, so next time you're out there, you think little more, you pay more attention, you get to your gun just a little faster." He squeezed Tim's shoulders. "No one is after seeing someone you know killed. You aren't the first person to doubt his ability to do the job and you won't be the last one either, but you'll be fine, Tim. Give yourself some time."

"I want to hit someone I don't want to spar - there's a difference." Tim said shaking his head. And since he wasn't going to find anyone to just roll over for him the way he really wanted, it looked like getting drunk was going to be the better option. And it had the added benefit of making it hard for him to think about anything straight. He could even have a beer or two in the morning before class - if they still had class after this.

"In case you've forgotten the only fucking reason I'm doing this shit job is because it was this or some prison lab experiment. I didn't choose this not like you did or Peter. How the fuck does that help me now? I could be dead in some prison or dead here on some shit case that I don't give a fuck about." Anger was easier - easier than trying to examine anything he was feeling.

"I don't want to give this time, man. I just want to go home. I want a normal life where people are killed in the street like that. I don't want to be a government agent." He shrugged away from Derek's touch pushing a hand through his hair and pulling before he dropped it to his side, and just as quickly crossing his arms over his chest like he was physically holding everything in.

"Then I'll hold the punching bag and you can beat the crap out of it, unless you think you can take me in a boxing match," he said, not hiding the smile there.

"I've not forgotten, but the why isn't going to change the situation we're in. Choosing it doesn't make you indestructible, just like being forced into it doesn't mean a life sentence. You can be alive here, and I will watch your back. I told you I would already and this doesn't change anything."

He sighed and let go. "I know, Tim, and we're trying, but until we find our way back, you need to keep it together, and I'll help you do just that. I have to speak to a few people, make sure that they are all right, but then we can leave and we can go to the gym or we can go back to the house." He had a feeling that it would be easier to talk to Tim with no people around. I can't give you what you want, but I can make this easier."

"Maybe I could." Tim shrugged, might even be better that way some part of his mind thought. He could get drunk after.

"Neal was watching Peter's back." Tim sighed, that hadn't done him much good. None of them were safe and it didn't matter what Derek promised him not when he couldn't really keep it.

He shrugged, it didn't matter. "Talk to whoever you want." He thought about the last time things had been so messed up, and even then it didn't compare to this. How could life in Dillon, Texas and the problems Tim had there compare to this?

"Then we can try that." Derek was hardly worried about going a round or two with Tim. He might even let him win just to get it out of his system, and then play a redo the next day to teach him what he did wrong.

"I'm not Neal," he said. "I've been doing this job for a long time and I've never lost a partner. I don't intent to do it now."

He nodded. "All right, I won't be long." He patted Tim's arm. "I'll be around soon, and then we'll get that match going."

Mike sighed as he stood the near window looking out at the darkened sky. He had just been starting to like Peter. It was a shame. A real shame. He couldn't lie though, he was glad to get off the base and finally see some action again. He allowed himself a small smile that he was careful to hide with his hand. So he and April were making quite a bit of action of their own. But, this was different. He was doing something. He was doing his job. Even if it involved driving an ambulance and interviewing people. And okay, he did his job other days, too. But it was still good to get off base, even if it was for a bad reason.

He rubbed his forehead thinking. If they could figure out what drew the ... heart attack man? asshole? son of a bitch? ... then they'd be closer to catching him. Knowing why Neal and Peter went there was a good first step. There was another concern that lingered in his mind. There were likely some people in the government who were talking right now of whether they were too much hassle. A dead operative usually brought about such conversations. They were always under the threat of having to run. Right now that threat felt more severe.

On a base, you could always feel when something was going on. You didn't have to know the details, but the things changes. The sounds were different, the movements changed. It wasn't one thing, but everything.

Today, it was more than evident that something was happening. When Robert found out, he was pretty much threatened by Vance, although he explained calmly that he understood the concept of orders and he wouldn't tell his brother what was happening. Not that Robert had never creatively interpreted orders, but he wanted his brother concentrating on what he was doing instead of a death he couldn't prevent.

Not sure what else he could do, he ended up at the team center where Morgan was conducting some type of informal therapy session. Robert wasn't interested. He didn't know the man, he didn't feel that sense of kinship that he felt with other pilots, so he stayed to the side. His eyes went to his house mates. It was weird being in the house with them, and now... was he supposed to say something? G talked about family, Savannah talked about uncles, but this was fucking weird. What was he supposed to say to his long lost brother's lover's children? And wasn't that a tongue twister. Still, he thought he should try and say something, especially when one of them was standing close. "Hey." Right, that was a perfectly good start. Now, he just needed to come up with the rest, which shouldn't be hard since he was a charming guy, very friendly, except that the brother thing seemed to have short circuited his brain. "You all right? Did you know him well?"

It had been surreal, it was one thing to see a body and see a gun shot wound, to know you'd put a bullet there even, or if it was someone you knew - they knew what they were getting into, there was an explanation to it. But this, seeing Peter and the other man who had been killed that day, here in this place that was... well she didn't know what it was, not safe that much she had known from the start but her family was here.

Sean was here and her dad - he was off again not here with them like he said he was going to be and she didn't know if he was all right and she just needed them all to be all right. She didn't worry about herself, she'd been trained and she was still training here and she could take care of herself, but how did you fight something like this?

She was pulled out of her thoughts though when Robert approached her, she straightened her back slightly and lifting her chin. "Hey." She nodded when he asked how she was. "Yeah I'm all right. Not that well, I've seen him around since I got here, he seemed nice enough though." Jenna shrugged. "Did you get a chance to talk to him this weekend?" She asked.

God bless the military and its training. She was almost standing at attention, perfect way to hide all emotions behind a familiar stance. The response was so obvious in the woman's body that almost made him laugh, although that was hardly the proper response at the moment.

"At ease, Lieutanant." The rank was a guess, but she was too young for anything else.

Robert shook his head. "Not really. He introduced himself, we exchanged a few words, but not really talked to him, no. Your brother was on his team, right?" Not that he didn't know. Formations or groups were things that you learned. He commanded about three hundred airmen, and he couldn't afford not to remember their units and jobs.

He stared at the people around him, not really looking at her. "Whenever I heard of a pilot going down, there was that sort of response that you have for a fellow airmen, it's that feeling that makes us wonder if anyone close to us is going to be next, if the ones that are out on a mission are in any danger." He finally turned to her. "If something were wrong, we'd know."

Jenna narrowed her eyes at Robert's comment, though she might have relaxed just a fraction, not enough to give away anything of herself - or what thoughts were running through her mind right then, but she wasn't so stiff.

She nodded, she needed to talk to Sean - not just because Peter was in charge of Sean's team, but because someone had died and that was her brother. "Yeah, Sean's on his team." She wished she'd talked to Peter more, or talked to Sean more about the man - so she knew something of what her brother must be feeling now.

Looking at Robert from the corner of her eye Jenna, bit the inside of her lip, unwilling to give away that much just yet. She knew that feeling he talked about though. Hearing when another platoon had been attacked, when guys were out pulling patrol and they got into a firefight - you always wondered who was next, if it was someone you knew.

"You can't know that." She said slowly, she didn't like the way his guess hit so close to home. "They don't know there is anything wrong, doesn't change the fact that there is." If Robert had gotten the same warnings she had not to mention anything to her dad or the rest of the people who lived in their house then he knew that. Platitudes didn't help anyone.

"It's got to be rough for him," he said, still using the casual tone. "It always is when it's a member of your unit, whether you were close or not."

He tilted his head. "G said MarSOC. Where were you stationed?" That would tell him just how fine she wasn't. No one escaped special ops without nightmares, whether they admitted it or not.

"I can, Lieutenant. I'm not telling you that there will never be anything wrong, but I'm telling you that right at the moment, there's nothing wrong or we'd know," he said. "You can't worry for what might happen. Focus on the here and now, focus on what you can see, because the alternative is giving into that feeling and that doesn't help you or anyone else." He cracked a smile. "That, and SEALs are damn tough. I've seen them in action."

It was rough for all of them. Robert's tone rubbed her the wrong way, maybe he was trying to help her - trying to be, she didn't know what he was trying to be but she didn't like it.

She nodded when he mentioned MarSOC, seemed they were still keeping people well informed even if they'd only been there a few days. She shouldn't be surprised really. "Afghanistan," She said and paused for a moment before adding, "Sangin."

He was right, and she hated that just a little bit. There was a part of her that wanted to worry - the part that had always worried when her dad was gone ever since she'd been old enough to realize that just because he was her dad didn't make him indestructible, but she'd learned to put a lid on that. To focus on her job, to focus on keeping herself safe before she worried about anyone else.

"Yeah, they are." She agreed with a slight lift at the corner of her mouth. She could focus on what was here, on Sean and keeping herself in one piece. "You work much with SEALs?"

"Man, that is tough," he said, but there was no sympathy or pity in his voice. It was a hard assignment, but they all got them and if she worked with MarSOC, they wouldn't get any easier. "Good for you. You must be a good Marine to be picked."

Robert smiled a little. He needed her focused on the here and now, because no one could afford to focus on something else, not when lives were at stake. "Yes, I do. Lieutenant Colonel, in charge of the 555 Fighter Squadron. We have one of the best anti-terrorist programs in Aviano, and that means we work with the CIA and the SEAL to get where the Air Force can't get. Since I'm in charge, that also means that I get to coordinate with them on missions." He looked at her. "Have you worked with them? Because if you have, then you know how tough the air. They make all the other special ops look like child play, even MarSOC, no matter what the Corps says about his Marines," he said, chuckling.

"Yeah, it was." It had been tough and Jenna wasn't going to say anything different to anyone who asked. She didn't need to pretend like it had been a walk in the park and anyone who seemed to understand the way Robert did would know that. "I am." She agreed, without pride or boasting - it was just a fact. Something she'd worked hard to insure, but just a fact at the end of the day, just like every other man and woman she'd worked with.

Jenna didn't know what she was feeling anymore, trying not to worry about her dad, focusing instead on Sean, on being here and keeping them safe like she'd promised her dad she would.

She shook her head. "Not really." She heard about them, the things they did but they didn't work with them much. "Sometimes we do reconnaissance for their missions." She shrugged, but that wasn't working with them. "Yeah I know, my dad's a SEAL, remember?" She said with a small smile. She'd defend the Marines with her last breath, but she knew the SEALs were tough.

There was no reason to comment on the mission or her abilities. It was hard enough for men to get picked for MarSOC. It was almost impossible for a woman. However, there was something more important in everything she's said.

He leaned a little closer. "Exactly! Then you know just how tough he is. He'll be fine," he said, winking at her. "And now, I'll leave you alone. I think your fearless leader wants a word with you. See you at home, Lieutenant."

He tapped the window pane a couple more times. Yeah he didn't like this one bit. They needed to be extra vigilant, especially tonight of all nights. If he were going in after a trained (or in-training) group, a night of an emotional event is when he'd do it.

"Agent Blye, could I have a word?" He asked and then headed to a more secluded spot in the room.

Kensi had worked as she always did; pushing everything aside and getting on with the job. It was the only way she had found that worked when dealing with the death of a colleague or of somebody you cared about and so she did whatever she was asked to do, making sure those around her were coping.

She was sitting down amongst the others when Mike appeared and she nodded, murmuring a 'sure' and following him. "What's up?" she asked, trying to keep her tone perky. "Are you all right?"

"Not to be cavalier about the death of a teammate and friend," were they friends? Eh, they were close enough, "I'm fine. There's a time to mourn and now's not the time." If he couldn't keep his emotions in check, he would've been dead 15 years ago. "That's actually why I want to talk to you. We need to make sure our guard doesn't come down and if anything be more vigilant. And for those who can't be," he looked around the room, "we need to do it for them."

He paused. "And by the way, how are you?"

"I'm..." She shrugged. "I'll be fine. Peter wasn't on my team but he was nice enough; it's never nice to lose a colleague. It's the civilians I feel bad for - It's not like this is common for them now, is it?"

She nodded, her mind already running over everything she'd need to do once she got back to the house. She'd have to brief everybody and run over the procedures again, make sure everybody knew their place in it. It was something that was mentioned a lot - Kensi was sure she wasn't the only one antsy over not being shot at on a regular basis - but they'd never yet had to enforce it in a real-life situation. That scared her more than a possible attack.

"I'll make sure we're all on high alert. It would be the best time to attack, that's for sure," she agreed. "When Derek's finished up talking to people, I'll mention it to him."

"Good," he said with a small smile. "Yeah, and some of them haven't seen things like this before. It's a bad time to have one's first exposure." He was sure the Morrows weren't phased in the slightest.

"Great, we also need to do something with the people in the hotel. I don't want to have to worry about getting them out of there if we're attacked. I suppose we could put them in an empty house," which would require talking to Hetty. "But they don't know procedures. So maybe best to split them up among our houses?"

"I imagine they'll be split up, yeah, and no empty houses right now. They're not a team and they don't have an escape plan," It was too messy having new people arriving right now and she scowled. "Our house is already pretty damn full but I imagine we'll take Caffrey regardless seeing as he's the one who's dealing with the most. Morgan won't want him far away."

"Indeed," he replied nonchalantly. If only it were that easy.

"Good idea about Neal. I'd imagine the Morrows won't want to be split up, and since your house is full and I'm not putting them in with Sam's kids," he didn't have a death wish, at least not tonight, "although I've no doubt Robert won't have a problem keeping them in line. They can stay at my house. We'll take Eliot too. He'd likely want to be near Parker anyway if there's an impending threat. We still need some place for Hall and Cooper. I don't know how attached they are to each other. But putting Cooper in with someone who he can talk science with wouldn't be a bad idea. It might help keep him calm and focused." Neal wanted to go home.

Not home as in back to their house here on the base but back to their dimension, back to somewhere that made sense. Peter was dead and Neal couldn't even tell Mozzie or Elizabeth about it - It had been bad enough before but at least there was a chance of them both going back to their normal lives. Now Peter was dead and he couldn't talk to anybody about it, not really. Nobody from here had known them before except for his fellow thief, Parker, and even then she hadn't known them.

When Kate had died it had been Peter that had kept him busy with work, kept annoying him to the point where he had to interact and argue back. With Peter gone... What was the point?

He'd gone quiet after the others had turned up and taken over, not wanting to talk to anybody. He felt like he'd failed at looking after the one person who meant more to him than anybody else on base, he'd failed their team too. How was White Collar going to work without Agent Burke at the head of it?

Sighing, he put his hat on and sloped it low over his forehead, blocking everybody out.

Derek had many people he wanted to check on, but there was one that was high up on that list. He didn't even pretend that he wasn't checking on Caffrey. Instead, he went straight for the man. Caffrey was silent, but he practically screamed get away from me, and everyone seemed to comply.

Not Derek.

He approached. "Hey. I know you don't want to talk to me, but you're going to have to. Everyone gets to talk to a psychologist after a shooting or after the death of a partner and since we don't have a psychologist here, you're stuck with me, but that can wait until tomorrow. You're staying at our place for tonight, and that's an order, not a suggestion." He wasn't going to leave Caffrey and Kepner alone without a lead or a security officer in that house. "We'll find you a place to sleep for tonight and then we'll find a more permanent solution."

Neal lifted his hat slightly when Morgan spoke to him, knowing there was no avoiding it. He already knew the man was an expert profiler; Peter had told him as much when they'd first arrived. He listened the other man speak and tilted his head, considering what he'd said.

"I don't want to talk to you tonight, that's a given, so can we save it for tomorrow? I'd appreciate it if you asked everybody else living at yours to give me a wide berth too. I'm not in the talking mood."

He probably should have been nicer about it, more like himself and less brusque, but Neal couldn't find the energy to even try to be himself right now. "Are you moving April too?" he asked, belatedly remembering that April did, in fact, live in the house with him and Peter. Or, he supposed, just him now.

Derek snorted. "You don't have to report for an evaluation until tomorrow, but that doesn't meant that you don't have to talk to me. I need to know where your head is in case something happens." He moved closer so that everyone else would see his back and kept his stance relaxed. "I get that he was your friend and partner. I understand that you want to be left alone, but I still have to make sure that if something happens, you aren't going to get yourself or someone else killed."

He nodded. "We will. She should be alone just as much as you," he said. "As I said, this is temporary. We'll work out something when Callen comes back." They had to worry about all the people at the hotel as well. "For tonight, we'll make sure, you are both with company."

"It doesn't mean I have to tell you exactly how I'm feeling either," Neal retorted. "But seeing as I know you're not going to go away, right now I don't feel that great, okay? Just have Kensi run over your evacuation plan with me so I know what to do but otherwise... I'll be fine. I'll try not to get anybody else killed today."

And that was the crux of it really. He was fine and Peter wasn't and it didn't seem fair when Peter lived for law and order and loved working as a fed and had been killed. Whereas he, an ex-con who always walked on the grayer side of the line had been spared for some unfathomable reason.

"Is she okay?" he asked. "I don't want to talk to anybody but I want to know April's all right.

This was exactly why he talked to people. They wouldn't tell you how they felt, but the more they talked, even about unrelated stuff, the more they revealed about themselves and their thoughts.

"You didn't get him killed." Guilt was the strongest emotion when losing a partner and it had to be even worse when you were a civilian and not used to this. "Peter was a senior FBI agent, he had experience and he had chosen this job. A  murderer killed him. You aren't responsible for everything that happens. The best we can do is stay focused and do what we are trained to do. That's all."

It would take time before Caffrey believed the words, but he still needed to hear then. "This wasn't your fault." Derek nodded. "I'll make sure she's all right."
