This was exactly why he talked to people. They wouldn't tell you how they felt, but the more they talked, even about unrelated stuff, the more they revealed about themselves and their thoughts. 

"You didn't get him killed." Guilt was the strongest emotion when losing a partner and it had to be even worse when you were a civilian and not used to this. "Peter was a senior FBI agent, he had experience and he had chosen this job. A  murderer killed him. You aren't responsible for everything that happens. The best we can do is stay focused and do what we are trained to do. That's all."

It would take time before Caffrey believed the words, but he still needed to hear then. "This wasn't your fault." Derek nodded. "I'll make sure she's all right."
