Characters: Cassie and Teddy
Setting: Night, Manhattan
Content: What do you expect from these two?
Summary: Teddy's had more than enough time to think about it, and needs to talk to Cassie about this immigration thing.
Teddy didn't know Cassie's schedule, and to be safe he took this trip after the dinner rush-- or maybe he was just hungry and put it off until after dinner. Either way, it was dark and chilly when he made his way through the city, making him tuck his arms close to his body and his hands in his pockets, wondering who he could ask for a pair of gloves. Or how he could get a job to get himself some gloves without a real identity. That would be fraud, wouldn't it? It was a weird thought, the reminder that he didn't really belong here. It felt just like home. If he tilted his head back, he could just make out the brightest stars, just like home. It smelled like hot dogs and dampness and car exhaust, just like home. And while he wasn't watching, people bumped his shoulders because he was in their way, just like home. It was almost easy to forget that Spider-man was in high school or Captain America was alive or there was no war here.
There was no way this glittering entrance led to where Cassie was staying. But a glance at the name and address smudged across his palm pretty well proved it. Teddy turned to try to get a glimpse of those bright stars again before shuffling into the hotel, head bowed apologetically for his unworthiness in this court of diamonds, darting for the elevator before anyone could kick him out for being a classless ruffian.
Even the elevator horrified him. There were no buttons. He had to stand and stare at the doors and the wall and feel his heart pounding until a girl appearing at his elbow had him almost jumping out of his skin. "Are you checking in...?" she tried, and when Teddy realized she wasn't there to demean him, he managed to remember to breath and shake his head adamantly.
"See a friend," he grunted dumbly, not meeting her eyes, but she smiled warmly anyway.
"Name?"
"Uh...I'm not...su--" Was she checked in under her real name? Was it in Mr. Stark's name? And that girl was staring at him like he had turned green, which he very well might have, until he blurted, "She's in 1702, how do I...?"
Thankfully, there were no more awkward questions. She left him with, "Of course, just a moment, sir," and drifted away. Oh, God, was she getting security? Did they think he was a thief or or something? Did they-- Teddy was interrupted by the soft ping of an arriving elevator, and the girl calling to him from the desk: "Have a lovely evening, sir."
